why does every gel I try dry my hair out?

Like Tree3Likes

I've tried gel with protein, without protein. With glycerin, without glycerin. With cones, without cones. No matter what, gel dries my hair out. I'd like to find a good gel because sometimes mouse isn't enough, plus gel lasts longer. I use a leave in and an oil to seal. my leave in is cone free and protein free as well.
anyone have this problem? I would like to try other stuff other then mouse.
I have the same issues, gel can be very drying! Many curlies layer products for that reason. I found that using flaxseed gel, a jelly product, a serum-like product or a curl creme after your leave-in but before your gel helps with dryness issues. Plus, depending on the gel, I only need about 2 dime sized blobs for my below bsl hair.

Do you have any of those products in your arsenal? Let me know if you need some examples

I use miracle 7 leave in mist then apply Aussie instant freeze. No drying issues!

Important it doesn't have alcohol in it. Takes a lot longer for hair to dry though. I really count on gel, I use a slip product or a light liquid gel first then quite a bit of holding gel with no alcohol (and no cones!) scrunched in. Mousse does not work at all for me, just did not get the clumps and hold I wanted. Wonder why gel would dry your hair, other than maybe the alcohol in it which most do.

Are you using the same oil and leave in? certain products just don't mix with others well so you have to find stuff that work together.

i mean i've tried a few oils and leave ins with my hair. the only gel that doesnt dry my hair out as bad is pure clean. what gels are out there with no cones, no protein and no alcohol?
Most gels dry me out too but I'm sensitive to certain proteins they use in gels. (Wheat, hops, etc.) And those that don't dry me out tend to me too strong in the crunch department.

You should always layer and have a good moisturizing leave in along with a few drops of oil to seal. I mix my KCKT with 4 drops jojoba in my palms and then apply to hair before I put any gel.

+1 on flaxseed gel. It may not have enough hold on its own but it's so easy to make and really moisturizing. You can add good stuff to it too. I made a new batch late last night and added aloe gel. (When I get restless at night I always feel the need to cook or bake something. I know I'm strange. I also made a banana loaf.)

My favorite gel so far is CJ Pattern Pusha. It's a light to medium hold, does not crunch, has a nice scent (sort of like melon and cucumbers), and is protein free. My favorite jelly is KCCC because it's moisturizing and makes my hair look and feel awesome, always!

what about
Kinky-Curly Curling Custard?

is like like a gel? has anyone used this because other gels dry out their hair?
+1 to the KCCC - that and Uncle Funky's Daughter curly magic are my favorite jelly stylers. But the KCCC is available more readily on the ground.
2c/3a, botticelli/wavy/'swavy (huh?)
fine, dense, normal porosity/elasticity, dry climate

My favorite brands are Kinky Curly, As I am, Curly Kinks, Curl Junkie, and Darcy's Botanicals. Also love sealing with oils (loving argan oil right now) and styling with jelly products (KCCC is my current favorite). Mostly trying to keep it simple!

ive been thinking about buying it. Im not liking the whole put it in your head soaking wet, though. I might try it with towel dried, semi wet hair.
I actually apply it twice - I scrunch in a small amount on soaking wet hair, then another small amount on damp hair after I scrunch with a microfiber towel. Sort of a modified smasters technique.

KCCC is different from a gel. It's a slimier, thinner, jelly like consistency. Sort of strange looking but it goes on smooth and my hair loves it. I'll have to test out jsuzkelley's technique because so far I do something different, sort of like what you want to try hambo. After putting my leave in and sealer, I scrunch squeeze out excess moisture with an MF towel until I get my hair at least halfway towards damp/dry. Then I apply my KCCC by smoothing it on and scrunching it up and letting air dry. But jsuzkelley's way sounds like it might be great too! A little bit goes a long way with KCCC though. I don't use too much because it's a heavier product even though you wouldn't know it from the consistency. That's better though. Just a little gets the job done in terms of definition and coverage.

P.S. jsuzkelley, talk to me about Uncle Funky's Curly Magic! It's like KCCC? I didn't know there was anything like KCCC. I must try it now. Is it just as good or even better?

My hair used to love eco styler but now that its longer it hates it! I also noticed that it broke my hair out in the front a little! But I am in love with flaxseed gel. It has the perfect hold for me.

I think you'd like what I call the "jelly" products--gelatinous consistency without the chemicals. Both KCCC and UFD Curly Magic would be included. Others are DM Curling Gelly, BS Magic Curls Puree or Gelee, CK Coil Jam, SS Curl Enhancing Jelly, As I Am Curling Jelly, ITDF Organicals Curl Defining Gel or Touchably Soft Gel and Camille Rose Curl Maker.

My hair hates polyquats, especially 4 and 10, which are found in a lot of gels.

The UFD also comes in a bottle with a pump, so it is much easier to use in that regard. I bought the 18 oz. bottle for around $25, but it is not as easy to find on the ground (unless you know a salon that carries it) so you have to order it online. All in all, these products perform almost identically for me, and are my favorite jelly stylers (I don't use traditional gel).

A pump rather than a tub would be the ideal. I don't like tubs. They feel so unhygienic even though my hands are always clean when I apply my products. (Straight out of the shower.) If they're exactly the same ingredients I'm not sure what the difference would be but I do know I still want to try it. Okay. . . Doing research now:

UFD:

organic aloe vera juice aqueous-infused extracts of marshmallow, chamomile, nettle and horsetail, vitamin E, agave nectar extract, citric acid, potassium sorbate, and natural fragrance

KCCC:

botanical infusion of water, horsetail, chamomile, nettle and marshmallow, organic aloe vera juice, agave nectar extract, tocopheryl acetate (vitamin e), pectic, citric acid, potassium sorbate and natural fragrance

It's like the exact same thing, but a different formulation. Supposedly the reviewers say their hair dried faster than with KCCC so that's something, I guess. I'm a little sad they don't sell it at curlmart but I'll go fishing. This is making me very curious. It's cheaper by the ounce too which is awesome, but I'm not sure I'll find it anywhere where I can get free shipping. Drat!
