Default Why aren't there Fine and Coarse boards

I am relatively new here and have of course spent lots of time hunting info and advice. I have found this a challenge though because my hair is fine with a loose wave pattern that is easily weighed down. I have seen posts from 3's with this issue too so I don't think this is a curl type issue. I know there is already controversy about the curl type rankings and boards. The issue I am having is that on the 2 board the reccs don't always apply because of tighter wave patterns or coarser hair. On the porosity boards the same applies. I realize that all the hair properties come into play but I think, especially for beginners, hair thickness is the easiest to get right. I think if there had been fine, medium and coarse hair boards when I started here I would have figured out I had fine hair and some more appropriate products a lot sooner. Because thickness/texture has a lot to do with the weight of product that will work I think separate boards for this hair property would be extremely helpful.

For the record I did originally think my hair was medium, but that was before I found the link to the Curl Junkie founders' post on the subject. That link should be in a sticky if its not already. However if there had been a medium board I at least would not have started out with such heavy products.

So............what does everyone else think?

that would be the texture forums that we have asked for when they do the reorganization.
they never replied, so i'm guessing it's not happening. if you look at the sticky announcement about consolidating hair type forums, you will read those posts in there. you can always add your post to it!

There was a lot of discussion (and a poll) about consolidating the hair boards and not having so many of them. For the most part, a lot of them don't get much "action."

For the record, I have fine hair and use a lot of really rich products. I just balance them out with protein. I think that's the reason I went from winter wavy/summer 3a to hair like my signature picture all year around.

Thanks for the info rbb, I added my 2 cents.

Kathy, I've seen that in your posts, I think you also state that you use very small amounts. The issue I had was that the main message I got from the book and my initial hunting here was MOISTURIZE!!!! So I bought a bunch of heavy Shea Moisture, GVP CB, etc and then had limp hair. I had to really hunt to find suggestions specifically for and from fine haired posters and am now adding more protein, etc. Unfortunately a lot of posters don't list there hair type info so even trying to find valid reviews on products is hit and miss.

It does look like the consolidation is in the works mostly based on RCC's list so we'll see what happens.

Thanks

I feel like NC is so forward in its approach to highlight curly hair...yet kind of undoes everything with this hair type stuff in every corner. It makes me cringe that product suggestions are given based on hair type. It also renders the reviews useless because it doesn't ask the reviewer their hair thickness. People write their hair type and jump straight to the review...yet I'm still wondering if it'll work for me.

You're 100% right, hair thickness is overlooked here and along with porosity it's the most important hair property. This mistake should be corrected.

I do use minute amounts of all products (expect for FSG), rich or not. I don't have a lot of hair--it's low density and short (ear to chin length as it grows between haircuts.) It's also low porosity, so doesn't absorb product quickly.

Don't think you should go by how your hair reacted to Shea Moisture products. Personally, I found the products heavy, as opposed to rich, if you understand the difference. My hair had trouble absorbing them--had to use the soap bars to get them out. While I usually use the soap bars to remove residual ingredients from the richer products, this was different. Almost like "build up." In the winter, I only wash with the soap bars once a week. I had to do this a day or two after I used the SM products because they just "sat" on my hair.

Regarding shea moisture - anytime you add moisture, you have to be sure to balance with protein. I'm fine, dense, porous, and I need weekly PT's, and use products with lots of moisture and protein.

As far as the boards go - idk. I think maybe a board for 2, 3, and 4 would be fine. Some people do have type related questions, when it comes to cuts and styles, etc. I do think having a "whurly" thread for those we straddle 2-3 - there seem to be a lot that do!

Hair properties are more important, though, I think. We have one for porous, I could see having one for fine and for coarse.
