Homemade FSG pros. . . a little help?

I saw the properties changed! But I gave her the advice from live curly live free. At least her two properties agree with one another though. That's a few less stabs in the dark, eh?

Girls, girls, GIRLS! ! !-why didn't I listen to you sooner? I should've made FSG ages ago. And when the first batch was a bit runny I should've tossed it out and made the thick batch I did this past week. FSG is a miracle worker. I think I may like it even more than kinky curly. I am not lying. It is AMAZING. I did it again today. This morning I lightly misted my hair and finger combed out the tangles and messiness that happened while I slept. Then I went to fix breakfast. Then I reapplied the FSG to slightly damp, nearly dry hair and it was magic all over again. I had so much definition. And when I broke the gelly cast 20 minutes later it was super soft pretty hair again! Tonight was my wash night but I'm willing to bet if I hadn't exercised this evening and mussed everything up I might've gotten day 4 hair tomorrow using the same technique. FSG is so much more forgiving than KCCC. Don't get me wrong, I love that with KCCC a little goes a long way. But with FSG you can be generous and bring on the curlage without having to worry about product overload or OD'ing on moisture. And my hair was so soft when I washed it today. You know how you can tell if it's dry when it's wet? (That's when I reach for my Shea Moisture restorative conditioner to mix with my regular co-wash.) Well, it was pure silk. So I was able to reach for my Yucca Baobab conditioner instead. I suspect with FSG my hair will be moisturized well enough that I can experiment with a bit more protein more often. That may help my porous hair and perk up my curls. Oh my goodness, FSG is a dream come true! I now officially have hope that I will be able to maintain some 3A and even 3B curlage around the nape during the dry, dry summer.

Lol! It's the only way to describe what's happening to my hair! It's a verb, adjective....heck, way if life when you have two small kids!
I made my fsg last night and its like water, even with the gelatin. What the heck? It boiled a long time.

You guys have inspired me....I have been making FSG since the summer and am intrigued by the addition of gelatin to the formulation. I made some and it is cooling as I type. BUT, I had a MAJOR mishap

I poured some into my plastic bottle, totally forgetting that it was too hot and low and behold, the bottle started deforming and tipped over spilling about half of it all over the counter I still have about 2-3 cups of gel left though. I can't wait to try it out! I may have to try it on dry hair like Dusa did.

UPDATE: Epic FAIL! It came out watery even after the gelatin!

This is my hypothesis because it was nice and goopy/thick before I started it boiling again. I think the trick is to just keep it hot enough to mix in the add-ins, but not to actually boil it again. I am going to try again later.

UPDATE: My second batch came out awesome! Can't wait to try it out

Oh no!!! Don't boil it the 2nd time!!! Just heat! Sorry if I wasn't clear on that before!! :/

Just kidding, so the watery FSG is fine, everything is fine, but here's a problem...my hair SHRANK! it SHRANK!!! People kept asking if I got my hair cut!
UGH! It's really curly, really pretty actually, just...a lot shorter looking because it sprang up so much.

Hmmmm...BUT i did try it (yes, I wet my hair down and applied it LOL) and got good results!

The simpler one... A little thicker than egg whites... Can't think of a good comparison. Syrup, maybe? But still egg whitey? Idk.

The complex one - it's more like jelly!

What is the complex recipe? I am hoping for a more jelly consistency. The one I made works great but spills out of my hand while I am applying it.

Jules, when I strain it I put it in a BPA free microwavable container. (Rubbermaid makes them. I purchased a set from Costco last summer. . . they may still sell them there.) That's the heavy duty plastic that won't melt even at high temperatures. Then I mix in the vitamin e and aloe or whatever you want to add (read: gelatin) while it's still pretty hot. I let it cool a little more out on the kitchen counter (maybe 5 minutes) and then I pop it in the fridge.

Also, the gelly I made now that my hair loves so much is like mucus meets jello, if you can imagine that. It's pretty thick. I think I'll try and make it a tad less thick next time to mimic KCCC's texture.

HoC: Wow, shrinkage! I want some of that. Well, I'm torn. I got a haircut last month and they lopped off about three inches so I miss my length, but then I'd forgo length for tighter curls. Too bad I'm protein sensitive. I think if I were to try the gelatin-FSG it'd have to be on a trial basis to see if doesn't flash dry my hair.

I found this by the way. So I am going to use the lavender and maybe get some rosemary or other essential oils for my next batch.

Dusa,

I usually use the 1 or 2 cup glass containers, but I thought I would try a plastic bottle this time for ease of use and to maximize the shelf life. Just got to remember to let it cool more next time! LOL

Over the last 6 months, I have tried the following additions:

shea butter (eeh)
aloe
epsom salt
jojoba
vit E oil
citric acid
essential oils: bergamot (love it), grapefruit, vanilla oil, neroli, rose (love it). Right now my fave blend is 6 drops bergamot, 1 drop rose, 2 drops vanilla.
gelatin (so far so good)
optiphen (preservative)

I really want to try pure argan oil next time.

I just checked in on my FSG and it had thickened up more!

My jelly version has a LOT of gelatin in it, so your hair has to like protein!

I do the FSG double batch, on whole packet of gelatin, corn starch, ACV, possibly some citrus acid, lots of avg, Epsom, jojoba and it coconut oil... I think that's it. I cook the gelatin and starch, then the FSG, then mix them together and add the other additives.

The result is gelatinous goop!

I may have to make the simpler version to try as the refresher, tho!!

Hi All,

This is my first time writing to this forum, but I have read soo much and have gotten amazing advise here.

Any hoot, I just tried FSG today and it is my HG! I can just tell!

I'll have to try the gelatin version though, does it really have a lot of protein?

I added jasmine eo, do any of you ladies add anything else?

My hair doesn't like too much.
Ooo, jasmine sounds nice. And yes gelatin is straight up protein. But you'll be mixing it with other things so maybe it'll work for you.

Jules, I didn't realize you were a total FSG pro! Grapefruit sounds delicious. Bergamot. . . not sure what this is. I'll have to look it up. Oh, orange! (Like the neroli.) Well, I like citrus scents. They're so clean and fresh.

Jas, didn't you say you make extra and pop the rest in the freezer? It doesn't change the consistency any? (Sometimes I put tofu in the freezer to change its consistency. Not that tofu has anything to do with FSG but they're both jiggly, aren't they?)

Oh, and here are my FSG curls today. They got a little messed up by the wind, laying my head back and just moving around in general but I wanted to show how FSG works just as well as KCCC. At least for me.

FSG pros, I have more questions!

1. Do you apply FSG to soaking wet hair, and how much do you squeeze out? How much is left in the hair? I have been applying it to wet hair, but for the sake of decreasing drying time, I do a lot of scrunching and squeezing out the moisture. Now, I end up squeezing a lot of "goo" out too. (The mucusy stuff slowly drips from between my fingers when I scrunch. I caught my boyfriend eyeing me suspiciously as I did this the other day, but he didn't comment, which made me laugh even more!) But anyway, am I ruining the effects of the FSG here by squeezing a bunch out?

2. How do you apply it, in general? Just scrunch? Do you rake it in? Do you smooth it in? I have been scrunching it in, but I'm debating whether this is the best way.

Dusa & Jules - your hair is absolutely gorgeous! So shiny and curly!
2b/c, high density
fine, medium porosity, normal elasticity
loves protein, hates polyquats
still searching for HGs
I apply to very wet hair in a smoothing motion, then a scrunch. I put a lot in to compensate for the losing when I scrunch.

I prefer my FSG (2 tbsp FS and 1 cup water) on the thin side. It is a major curl definer but leaves a bit of crunch on my hair which I don't like. So now I use 3 tbsp FSG plus 1 tbsp jojoba oil plus 11/2 tsp glycerin on my 4a midneck length (if stretched with fingers) hair. My curls are defined, shiny and with no crunch.
