CG Approved Hair Oils?

So I'm a bi-racial 3C curly, half black and half white. I'm trying to grow my hair out so I decided to go sulfate and silicone free, and I'm no longer using shampoo. Currently my hair is growing out from a bad haircut, and it has a bit of a "shelf" going on. The longer bits are closer to shoulder length but the shorter bits are between chin and shoulder.

Because "black" hair dries out easily, I'm using African Pride Olive Miracle Growth along with my rinse-out shampoo (VO5 Moisture Milks) and my new leave-in (Suave Naturals). I rinse with cold water now to seal in the moisture. My problem is, I just checked the ingredients list for my oil and it has phenyl trimethicone in it. Even though this cone is toward the end of the list of ingredients, I still would like to completely eliminate silicones so I can get the best results from going silicone and sulfate free.

Are there any commercial CG Approved hair oils out there, or just natural ones (olive, coconut, etc)? If there's any commercial oils, are they available for purchase at a drug store? I'm making about $50 a week so I gotta be cheap!

Another question, I've read somewhere that natural oils like olive oil shouldn't be applied directly to the root/scalp because it causes hair loss. Is this true? For those of you who use these kinds of oils, how do you tend to apply it?

Also, for reference, I've included pics of the hair cut I got, both curly and straightened. I don't straighten anymore, but I occasionally diffuse. The curly-haired picture is the most recent of the two.

I use olive oil daily to seal my hair and haven't noticed hair loss. I am seven months natural. I have been doing CG since my big chop. I occasionally massage my hair at night with coconut oil. Coconut oil is high in protein so if you're protein sensitive avoid that. I am attaching a picture so you can see my hair. Left is big chop; right is current.

So I know I don't have black or bi-racial hair but I do have very porous coarse hair that is thirsty, dries out easily, and likes oils in general. For sealing with me I think it's best to use a nonpenetrating oil. If the oil penetrates the hair shaft, it won't be sitting on top of your hair strands protecting it from the elements and keeping in the moisture. They sell pure grapeseed oil and jojoba oil at Walgreens. (I think the Heritage brand?) I like either of them to seal. But for grapeseed oil I got a big ole huge bottle at the grocery store for really cheap. Can't remember how much. I also have a 4 ounce bottle of jojoba oil from Trader Joe's that I think was only around $5. Maybe less.

(Oh, and GSO does penetrate, but just not as effectively as EVOO or EVCO. It's also odorless which is why I dig it.)

Almost forgot--extra virgin olive oil is always inexpensive at the grocery store and I think it's perfectly safe to apply wherever. I use it for deep treatments because it's a highly penetrating product. My personal fave so far is extra virgin coconut oil because it makes my hair very soft every time I use it. I also love to massage it into the scalp with deep treatments. (No hair loss! If anything my hair has been growing faster since I started doing deep treatments.) So long as it's extra virgin it's good quality. And it is actually protein free (because the oil has been separated from the milk) although some people feel like it acts as a protein because it penetrates the hair shaft and will, if you combine it with protein say with conditioner or styling product, allow the protein to penetrate better. I'm protein sensitive but I own two styling products with coconut oil in them that combined with silk protein don't bother me or dry out my hair. So again I don't use coconut to seal because it's a penetrating product. The cheapest I've gotten EVCO is $6 from Trader Joe's.

P.S. I just picked up some avocado oil ($7) and castor oil ($9). (16 ounce bottles.) Both the NOW brand. Sold at like Whole Foods or health food stores.

I think the avocado oil will act like EVOO because it's full of monounsatured fats but it might also act like coconut in that it allows protein to penetrate better. (Avocados, like coconuts, are rich in protein before the oils are separated.) I plan to use it for deep treatments.

I plan to massage the castor oil into the scalp (for hair growth) and put some in my deep treatments to decrease breakage and help retain length. It's super thick and sticky and I remember aqua_lily saying she does a 50/50 mix of this and coconut oil to water it down so she can apply it better. She also massages it into the scalp and swears her hair has grown twice as fast since she's started doing so.

HTH!

Thanks for your replies! The store I work at sells EVOO so I'm planning on trying that soon
