Adjusted my routine today...

Results are... Inconclusive, I guess.

I combed it differently in the shower. A few days ago I tried the "upside down" combing/rinse thing. Yeah, no. Lol! Not only was my neck screaming, but it broke up some clumps, and made the back... Odd.

Today I went back to tipping forward and then lifting the roots, except I combed from the crown to bangs forward. Then I did the normal LI/seal/stylers bit, tipping my head upside down and side to side to scrunch.

I had forgotten SM smoothie, so I put a dab of that with a dab of BRHG in my ends and plopped.

Curls spiraled up before my eyes!!

Then I plopped - for too long!! And between that and my messing with it too much while diffusing, it turned out just so-so. :/ (I may be due for clarifying, too.)

But I think if I hadn't "mishandled" it after styling, it would have turned out better! May try this again next time and report back! ;)

Hey, Jas. I dont comb my hair in the shower at all except with my figngers, in fact, I pretty much dont use a comb except to make the part. Yeahm that messing with it too much in styling will do us in every time...

Jas76 03-07-2013 01:16 PM

I HAVE to comb. My hair is too long, fine, dense, and porous for fingers to be enough to handle the tangles. Plus if I don't comb I get frizz in the form of hairs that were "caught" in the clumps rather than laying "flat" with their other friends.

I WISH I could get away with not combing!!

It turned out ok - the canopy was kinda a mess tho. :/ Like I said, I'll try it again next time and see if it works out better without me man-handling it! Lol!

My hair is super tangly too, Jas. That's why I can't rinse upside down. Every time I try the next time I go to wash or the morning after when I refresh I get these demon snarls around my neck! I don't know. It might be the haircut and the myriad of layers right now. Maybe once it's grown out again the weight will put it down a little and help it behave itself. I also feel like I have to comb. My hair is strange. The left side is nowhere near as dry and tangly as the right. I don't know why. I'm good to both sides. I even put a ton of extra leave in and conditioner on the right but it's still dryer and much more tangle prone. So I can typically finger comb the left side but once I start on the right it just takes so long I'd be in the shower forever. So I manage to finger comb some of that if and when I can but I typically have to use a wide toothed comb, I've found. But I LOVE my wide-toothed comb. Nobody is going to tell me that comb isn't magic. One time I thought I'd lost it and went into a panic. I was so happy that when I went back to Koreatown they still had it in the beauty shop I'd found it all those years ago.

You've probably already thought of this, but do you tend to sleep on that side (right)?

Houseofcurls 03-07-2013 05:32 PM

I have the issue of the hairs caught in the curls. I wash and rinse upside down but my hair is getting too long for that...I kind of dont know what other way to do it, but the bottom is like all caught up, I just need a different routine.

Jas76 03-07-2013 08:46 PM

Ok- for the nape tangles - the ONLY thing that has helped there is sealing with MO.

The winter is worse for that not only bc of the dry air but also because of collars (especially of coats) rubbing on them.

As for the right side being more tangled, that can be from coats, too, but also - is that the side you carry your purse/bag on? I've noticed that causing me issues before!

I grab my nape hairs from time to time, twist them in small sections, then cut any split ends off.

Jas76 03-07-2013 10:38 PM

So... This was odd... My hair seemed to get better as the day went on. Canopy curls perked up a bit, and my hair got SOFTER as the day went on. WTH?

There is a bit of frizz, almost like it's OC'd, but without the dreaded droop that comes with that. Idk! It's never acted like this before! Lol!!

anonymous_133347 03-07-2013 10:39 PM

I sleep on my left side more, I think. (Just statistically.) But I wake up in some awkward positions sometimes so who knows what goes on there. I also don't pineapple or do the sleep cap. I know I should but I'm lazy and when I did try pineappling that one time my hair felt sooooo heavy on top of my head. It annoyed me and I couldn't sleep. So off it went. Also scrunchies offend my sense of fashion.

I think the reason why the right side is more tangly (and again I think, I'm not sure,) is because it's my curlier side. The left side is a tad less curly so I scrunch extra there and sometimes I break the clumps on the right when it gets obnoxiously curly compared to the left. (I'm talking nearly a half inch shorter this one day. It was bizarre!) Someone did a post about this on the 3A section of the forum so I know it's common to have different patterns and textures on either side of your head. I just think it's funny that it splits right down the middle. :-?

So Jekkyl and Hyde right? What gives?

Jas76 03-08-2013 08:52 AM

I DON'T KNOW!!! Lol!! It even survived the night ok! What is going on?? Lol!

Maybe it was applying the smoothie later? I usually put it on soaking hair. This time it was after MF scrunching, just before plopping.

I've never had my hair look BETTER throughout the day. Maintained the style, yes. Gotten only slightly worse by the end, sure. But better?? Never. Now, of course it started out not great. Not bad, but not great.

Maybe it's a freak thing and will never happen again. This one really has me confused!!

anonymous_133347 03-08-2013 12:45 PM

Check the frizz forecast. Maybe it's the weather? If not then please do the exact same thing all over again and see how it turns out. I put the smoothie in dry hair sometimes to fix a curl that's been flattened or stretched. That stuff is fabulous!

OMG!! So I did everything the same - even better results!!

Well, I used a more cleansing low-poo this time, I guess, and pre-pooed with basically what I'd use to DT... So maybe a little different. But I combed it the same way, and I did the smoothie AFTER the MF scrunch, and just before plopping.

Awesome spirals! Shrinkage!! Just the right root curl and volume!!!

Will be permanently changing my routine!! :)

I do need to get a pro cut done, however. I have been cutting my own for over a year, and it's time to have someone who knows what they're doing (and can see the back of my head) take a stab at it!

Would like to go back to my deva stylist... Maybe I'll try scheduling one in the near future. We'll see. That's a lot of money that I don't have to throw around....

Interesting Jas! Glad to hear the new routine is working. When I found something that worked, it was like angels were singing, LOL! I never had good results styling with SM Smoothie but there's about a tablespoon left in the jar and I may just try it before plopping.
I know it has been a while, and I forget if the thread is still around... but 'cone experiments??? How did that end up working out?

lucyprimrose 03-10-2013 03:41 PM

Hi Jas, glad you've had this discovery!

Can you explain a bit more how you combed it...I'm not quite sure, was it almost as if the head was upside down, but really just tilted forward?

Give it a shot! I mixed mine with a little gel, don't forget! ;)

Cone experiments... Thought I might try again once it gets warmer out. I was having dryness and frizz.

Yeah, just tilted forward, and I combed the crown/top/bangs forward. I tip all the way upside down long enough to scrunch, and again to plop, of course.

It's easier on my neck, but I still get the volume on top!

lucyprimrose 03-10-2013 07:37 PM

Thanks Jas, I might give that a go because when I go totally upside down it does boost the curl but it also seems to leave the crown/canopy really snarled up.

Plus yes, necks are important!
