Default Can I Loc Without Actually Locking?

I would like to wear my natural hair in dreadlocks, or a style that imitates dreadlocks, without extensions etc. I was wondering if it is possible to wear locs for about 2 weeks or one week at a time for a protective style, and then take them down (wash, condish, DC, PT) and then redo them when that time is up? Or would that be damaging to my hair? If it is possible I was wondering what type of products I should use for locing process? I am not looking for gels, since they dry out my hair.
All help, suggestions are welcome and appreciated; thanks in advance.
