About to adjust my routine

Basically my dilemma right now is: continuing CG vs. going low-poo. I'm about a month into CG right now and I want to adjust my routine. I'm a bit in doubt about how I will adjust it and so I included my current routine in this post + reflections on how my hair generally behaves with this routine, hoping that someone can help me out.

My routine in a nutshell:
- Weekly co-wash with Curl Junkie Beauticurls Argan & Olive Oil conditioner. I divide a small amount of conditioner in my hair. Then I get conditioner on my hands and massage and massage and massage. I need a lot of conditioner to be able to massage my entire scalp. After that I comb my hair a wide-tooth comb. Then I let it sit (in a bun) just as long as I need to wash my body and brush my teeth. Finally, I rinse out everything and put it back in a bun. I dry myself off, get some clothes on and release the bun, apply Curl Queen and scrunch my hair dry with a cotton t-shirt. That's it.
- Daily: I spray my hair with water until it is as thoroughly wet as possible. Then I apply Curl Queen, comb it with a wide-tooth comb and scrunch it with a cotton t-shirt.

Hair behaviour:
My curls are slightly more defined (definitely so at the end of the day) and also less frizzy, but not as shiny and soft as most curlies who went CG have. I'm thinking this might be because Curl Queen is loaded with protein and what I've understood is that coarse hair is not too fond of protein.

Also, whereas most curlies seem to love their hair on days when they have washed it, I absolutely don't. My hair seems a bit limp whereas it usually is really strong (I've always had this problem btw). It even becomes somewhat poofy. I know this could possibly be because I do my entire co-wash routine with a fairly heavy conditioner. That being said, I'm thinking about getting a new product to balance this out. I will not abandon my current conditioner because it is very expensive and I do like both the smell and how nourishing it is. I simply think that my hair is too healthy (I haven't used a blow dryer whatsoever for at least 3,5 years now, I never coloured it whatsoever and I've been using natural shampoos and conditioner for 2,5 years) to handle that much nourishment.

I'm thinking about getting Curl Junkie Assurance Gentle Cleansing Shampoo as just co-washing makes my hair go flat on the top of my head and it becomes weighed down. My guess is that a low-poo wash, followed by conditioning with my current conditioner will definitely improve the situation. Maybe co-washing is just not meant to be for me. I considered getting Daily Fix as well but I'm scared that it still is too heavy and that I will overcondition. I don't have any low-poos right now and I don't want to harm my hair with any sulphates. I mean, I've avoided them for years and have used them twice to start with a clean slate for CG and my scalp does not like that.

I'm going to get only one product this time but I probably will order the Curl Junkie Curl Assurance Smoothing Daily Hair Conditioner when I'm out of Beauticurls Argan and Olive Oil. It seems to be lighter so probably more suitable for my coarse, low porosity hair. In terms of styling, once I finished my Curl Queen bottle, I will order Curl Junkie Coffee-CoCo Curl Creme - Lite as that one does not have loads of proteins and I just really want to try it.

What do you think about my reflections? I just really want to be able to understand why my hair behaves and reacts in certain ways so I can make sensible choices when it comes to my routine.

Some links to pictures so you get an idea (though they're not the best pictures, but still).

I think your reflections make sense. I, for one, cannot co-wash often as it weighs my fine hair down. It does sound like you are over conditioning your hair. You could try a lighter conditioner as a co-wash, suave and V05 have some lighter ones, I like suave coconut natural when I do co-wash, but again I don't very often. I usually use deva low-poo, tho I've heard good things about shea shampoos and will probably be looking into one of those when I run out as they are cheaper and available at target. If my hair doesn't feel overly dry, I can use suave as my condish, otherwise I'll use yes to carrots. I have the CJ daily fix and its def not rich, so I don't think it would be to heavy for you, but I'd try a suave or V05 first as they are cheaper. Your hair looks amazing in the pic btw! Tons of volume and beautiful waves!

My hair loves protein, plopping, and diffusing! Trying to find a way to style and air dry.
Thank you for your reply, AKgirl! I indeed feel like I'm overconditioning. Just in doubt whether I should get a lighter conditioner (like Daily Fix) or a low-poo. I used to low-poo before going CG. I would love to stick to co-washing but I just think my hair is too healthy for that and that I should at least low-poo once in two weeks or something.

And thank you! I'm very happy with my hair and hope I can even improve it by taking better care of it than before :-)

Curl Junkie products for co-washing is over powering in my opinion. You could go on lighter co-wash like Vo5 kiwi lime squeeze. Also its ok to alternate between low-poo or no-poo and co-wash. I do that often. My fav is Deva- no poo. I also use Giovani triple treat shampoo watered down- once in few months to remove buildup. For some people it might be too harsh. works for me though

BTW you have beautiful hair

Hi CurlyIndianGirl, thanks for your reply! I'm leaning towards getting a low-poo again because my conditioner is so rich. Unfortunately I can't get hold of most of the products recommended here because I live in the Netherlands, but I will definitely go and look for a natural, lighter conditioner/shampoo

And thank you, I'm really happy with my hair already!

Hi Lauraimes!

I'm also from The Netherlands and I can recommend you some light co-washes which you can buy in stores:

- l'Oreal Elvive Volume Collageen (the renewed formula no longer has isopropyl alcohol (a drying alcohol) so that's great!)
- Neutral conditioner (VERY light, I bought it at Jumbo)
- Aloe Vera line or Olive line conditioner from the Action

HTH!

Thans for your reply and recommendations, Aqua_Lily! I remember you're from the Netherlands as well because you welcomed me when I introduced myself

Right now I'm thinking about getting the CJ low-poo after all because to me it seems that my hair really is overconditioned. Do you happen to have any experience with CJ Coffee CoCo Curl Creme? Every single time I come across that creme I want to add it to my basket. I'm trying to figure out whether the ingredients "match" my properties, but that's still quite a challenge for the moment being. The Curl Junkie blog has been really helpful but I still don't really know whether I'm protein-sensitive or not, whether my hair likes emollients, humectants, etc. If you have useful links or tips, they're more than welcome!

Laura,

First, you are your hair are too cute! I think it looks great.

I have 3b curls but I have the same exact properties as you - coarse, low porosity, and dense and long. I'm also new to CG and have been trying to figure this all out before caving and low pooing. I don't color or heat/dry my hair either and it is pretty healthy. I'm learning that people with our hair properties are a lot less common, and have a much harder time finding the right products as we are a lot more limited to what works well on our hair compared to finer haired curlies. But, it is possible with loads of patience (so they say!)

My hair HATES protein, although I understand many can tolerate keratin or silk proteins. If you have a problem with it your hair will feel like straw when wet and will look a bit frizzy. I can't use anything with coconut in it either for that same reason. I just had a couple of bad experiences with protein, polyquats, and coconut. I've now found a conditioner with good slip that feels good and finally lets me get a comb through...but is also making my hair over-moisturized (I think). I can't really give any advice or recs (yet!) but here are some links. And I hope you let us/me know how any new products you get are working for you. Us low porosity coarse dense curlies have to stick together!

If you haven't read this already, here is a link on porosity which talks about protein and humectants for your hair type...although, I'm learning what works for one may not for another and trial and error is really the best test. Curly Hair Tips, Styles & Products - NaturallyCurly

This is another older but seemingly good thread:

As you can see I've been madly researching this myself! Good luck! Hope this helps you some.

Hi misbehave!

Thanks for your elaborate post I will definitely check out all the links. I kept thinking about my hair properties and about how my hair behaves and I suspect that I might have gotten the properties wrong. I started a new thread about that and people agree on my reflections, so it turns out that I'm probably not coarse with low porosity. I have to go to practice right now, but I'll be looking at my properties again later today, then check out your links

Right now, I'm thinking I might have medium instead of coarse hair. Also, I'm trying to figure out porosity again because every strand has some occasional bumps even though my fingers run over the strand quite smoothly. I'll just keep trying!

Let me know if you do the hair analysis, curious about it :-)
