shoulder length question

I read last night that people who are growing their hair out from shoulder length to bra strap, say to put your hair up alot or else it will stay at your shoulders for a while? Putting it up alot makes it grow faster? Has anyone heard of this and can explain why this is?
back when I had shoulder length hair I was trying to grow it out to bra strap and it kinda slowed down alot so i just cut it off but if putting it up alot when it gets to shoulders, makes it grow, then i might try this method.
Once your hair starts hitting your shoulders, it hits all your clothes too. So there is more abrasion and your hair can wear and break off. This happened to me - never got any kind of split ends until my hair got shoulder length while wearing all kinds of wool sweaters and coats. Wearing your hair up, or "protective styling" helps prevent your ends from getting damaged.
