Can't air dry?

Like Tree1Likes

Ok. I thought I remembered a thread about this, but I can't find it on the search feature. (Anyone remember this? Or am I just crazy?)

So here's my question. In the summer I try to air dry as much as possible, but it doesn't do great things for my hair.

Fall and winter I tend to diffuse most of the time bc of the cold. But today I was in all day and bc the boys refused to nap, I didn't have the chance to diffuse and I let it dry on its own.

Here's what I find - my curls stretch out from the weight of the water, and some places look more 2c than 3a, when I tend to be more 3a when I diffuse. I also lose root curl and volume (even though I clipped).

I CAN air dry, but it just doesn't look as good at all, so I only do it on days I know I won't be out in public much. Lol!

Tomorrow it will refresh OK, but I doubt it will look better.

Anybody else find this to be the case? And if so, what's your curl type, hair length, and properties?

Thanks!

I've found that if I can take 10 minutes or less to only diffuse the ENDS of my hair, it takes a lot of weight out and really makes the rest of the drying process go much more smoothly (and quickly). It makes a major difference to the final appearance of my curls. Even just 5 minutes helps. The key is to just get some of the excess water out. (I'm medium/coarse, low porosity, mix of 3s.)

Trying out steaming!
For me it just takes too long. And by too long I mean honest to god dampness at 7pm after showering at ten in the morning. And for some reason air drying seems to cause a lot more frizz than diffusing. You are right, it isn't the same at all.
See, my ends dry at a decent pace, but my roots will be wet for much longer, and then if my curls aren't pulled down at the ends, the top is, and I lose root curl and volume, and my hair has that... "hanging" look to it, KWIM?

Maybe if I use a sham-wow or something I can get enough moisture out - lol! But I need lots of moisture to get my curls and clumps to form, then I can shammy the wet out!

But diffusing is still better. :/

Mine is similar in that I have less volume and wave when I air dry. I love the way my hair turns out when I diffuse, but I don't want the damage so I always air dry. That's also why I can't put product in soaking wet hair, because with my weak wave, air drying and having fine hair water and products weigh it down. I scrunch out water before adding product and that helps a lot. Adding my mousse after I plop also adds volume and enhances my wave a bit.

My hair loves protein, plopping, and diffusing! Trying to find a way to style and air dry.
See, if I don't put product in soaking hair, I don't get as good of curl formation! I get clumpless waves, with some major curls underneath.

Today I have the unhappy limp canopy but rope curls underneath. Ugh. Can't wait to restyle in the morning!!

Oh, forgot to mention that I, too, seem to get more frizz if I air dry. I think bc the clumps get disrupted before fully drying while dealing with my 2yr olds.

If I OVER diffuse I get frizz, too, though. So I have to be careful!

I don't really get much damage from diffusing bc I only do it on the warm or cool setting - never on hot!

Ok... Hoping for better hair tomorrow!!

I'm the same. Air drying is just not gonna happen for me unless I don't care how my hair looks that day. It lays flat, it's not bouncy and curly. And the time? Forget it. Hours upon hours. Even if I diffuse, I have found that my roots were still damp until noon. Yesterday I used a soft bonnet and it was 20 min start to finish, hoping that continues to work for me.

I am a solid 3B and the couple times I air dried and came to work, I had people tell me I shouldn’t wear my hair like that anymore. My hair had WAY less volume and dried in a funny shape. Personally, I like less volume but I think my hair might have been so flat, I had the wet cat look. I liked my actual individual curls better though because they were nice and clumped.

No air drying for me! My hair ends up very flat, no root volume, and much less wave. I have fine wavy hair and it just gets weighed down so easily. I like my hair to have the volume that diffusing gives me. My hair also takes a really long time to dry, and I just cannot keep my head still long enough. I successfully let me hair air dry recently, but I had to focus on not touching my hair or messing it up, and that just annoyed me. Plus I live in a city and walk everywhere, which means I'd absolutely have to stay inside for the 6-7 hours while it dried or else wind would ruin everything. Big no-no for me.

Hard hat dryers or whatever they're called don't seem to work for me either. I've only used one once when I got my Deva Cut, but I didn't like it. There was less frizz because I wasn't messing with my curls, but it was just flat and lifeless. No fun!

Yeah, same for me on the "hard hat" dryers. My hair is too long. It makes the top flat and the bottom stays wet and heavy - a bad combo!! And since my hair is layered and my canopy is a problem child... I think that is a bi part of why my devacut styling results weren't so good. And I think the curl by curl citing would have been more "accurate" to my actual hair needs if it had been styled and diffused by me. Not that I was unhappy with my Devacut - I thought it was great! But my hair didnt quite cooperate that day, so that effected my results.

Back to topic... I'm glad I'm not alone!!
Going to DT tomorrow and be sure to diffuse!

I have problems with long drying times and "flat top" too, but I'm pretty lazy and so until now haven't even thought about what I can do to solve the problem.

But this morning, after rinsing my hair, clipped up the roots of my hair with two roller clips and left them in as I drove into work.

SUCCESS!! Great root curl/volume!! SO easy, too!

Ditto the hard hat for me. That's why the soft bonnet actually worked so well, and at $12 it's worth a try for you guys! I attached it to my dryer and flipped my hair over. I sort of "dumped" my hair into the bonnet while it was off, like it was a bowl. Then turned it on and flipped my hair back over. My hair stayed piled up on my head inside the bonnet while it dried, so I got root lift as if I were drying upside down.

I think my hair needs to form soaking wet, but if it stays that way, whatever was formed gets weighed down. So I have to set the curls soaking, scrunch out as much of the excess moisture as possible without disrupting them, then diffuse them dry so they don't loose the shape and volume.

Oh, high maintenance hair. :/

At least I know what works, tho!!

I prefer to air dry (I'm low maintenance like that), but my hair looks a million times better when I diffuse, although I do get more frizz.

This. All of this. My properties aren't anything like yours (I'm medium coarse, normal porosity, low to normal elasticity) and I have the exact same issues. Must put product into soaking wet hair to distribute well and get good clumps, but must also scrunch out lots of water so curls can form nicely. And MUST diffuse if I want curls, not waves with ringlets at the ends. On top of that, must clip roots until completely dry to keep the volume that I got from the diffusing. Air drying is for when I don't care what my hair looks like. :-)

Hello, everyone Hmm...haven't been on in a while...

My hair is so confusing with diffusing! A while ago when I did it more often, it would look GREAT and get up to 3a, but then again, it was a lot shorter. Since I've been growing my hair, the curl pattern has loosened. Also, for me, the problem with diffusing was that it would look amazing for a little bit, but then the curls would fall and it would feel dried out later.

Now, I air dry exclusively, but I am trying to get more volume and root curl. I get the "hanging" effect too and am thinking about clipping tonight.
