Panthenol Epiphany

I figured out something about my hair today, and I'm excited about it! My hair does not do well with panthenol.

My hair has had negative reactions to a few products:
Kiss My Face Upper Management Gel, Shea Moisture Souffle, Nature's Gate Tea Tree conditioner, and (yesterday) Aubrey Organics B5 gel.

What do all these products have in common? Panthenol! Also, these are the only products I've had bad experiences with.

The Aubrey Organics B5 gel really made it clear to me yesterday. My hair came out okay with the gel, but it felt strange. It felt dry and scratchy to the touch, was not as shiny as usual, and felt bumpy. I know I have normal porosity hair, but when I ran my fingers over the strands they felt like high porosity is described. I pulled out a strand to examine it, and I could see the areas that were too "full" - my hair had varied widths throughout and felt very stiff. I imagine this is similar to the symptoms of protein overload, and is probably the reason I thought I was protein sensitive at first. The first encounter I had with panthenol was when I used the Nature's Gate conditioner followed by Shea Moisture souffle. My hair was terrible - rough, dry, tangled. I thought it was a negative reaction to protein in the Nature's Gate condish, but since have found my hair loves protein.

Apparently, panthenol is a provitamin and not at all a protein, but acts in a similar way. It is a humectant and can penetrate the hair shaft, and is often used to add "thickness" and "strength" to hair. I find it really interesting that I can use a lot of protein, but one day of panthenol and BAM, dry, rough hair.

Anyone else's hair react the same way? I'm searching for a more natural gel, but I guess I have to rule out the Aubrey Organics options.

I can't use it, either. While it isn't a protein, it makes my hair feel the same way that protein does. Since one of its jobs is to thicken the hair strand, I can see why I hate it. My hair strands are thick enough already.

Well, your hair likes protein thickening, but not the panthenol kind.

Now you at least have something for product searching criteria.

For me I feel that it's slightly drying from its humectant properties. I know my hair is dryer when I use styling products with it (primarily gel) that I leave in my hair for any length of time. That is why I tend to use extra leave in when I do use a gel. However, in conditioner or leave in panthenol does not seem to bother me at all. And it might just be that gel, in and of itself, is drying for so many other reasons.

Ok, my hair has been throwing a temper tantrum since I used the B5 design gel. It is dry, frizzy, and feels over-thickened, if that makes sense (stiff, brittle).

I am assuming the best way to counteract this is a DT? Should I do a protein-free, panthenol-free DT? I know I need more moisture, but looking through my products protein and/or panthenol is in just about everything.

It's also in my SM low poo, so I think I need to pick up a new low poo. I have a lot of shorter hairs that are a couple inches long and stick out on top of my head. I've been trying to decide whether it is breakage that is happening now, or if it is the vestige of breakage that happened before I went CG. All the short/broken hairs seem to feel coarse and brittle right up to the scalp. I have been wondering how this could be since I'm careful to apply any protein products only to the length of my hair. I'm guessing this could be from the panthenol in my shampoo?

Redcelticcurls - does panthenol cause any other issues besides acting like a protein for you? Does it cause dullness? My roots have been dull and drying much quicker than normal, which is strange.

Maybe I'm just going a little crazy over here. I'm frustrated because things were going well until I tried a handful of new products! Sigh.

Are you sure it's panthenol that's the problem? Have you used other panthenol products without issue?

Could it be two products not playing nice together? Or perhaps it's the panthenol not playing nice with another ingredient?

I'm not saying I don't think it could be the panthenol, I just want you to be sure you have found the real source!

I'm not 100% sure. I was a lot more sure until I sat down and looked at all my products and now I'm just overwhelmed and don't know where to start.

The three products I've had the absolute worst reactions to are:

Kiss My Face Upper Management Gel:
Water of Utrica Dioica (Certified Organic), Calendula Officinalis, Athemis Nobilis, Hyaluronic Acid, Sodium Hydroxymethyl Glycinate (Amino Acid derived), Faex Extract, Panthenol, Tocopherol (Vitamin E),Citrus Grandis

AO B5 Design Gel:
Aqua, aloe barbadensis leaf juice*, panthenol (vitamin B-5), acacia gum*, astragalus gummifer gum (tragacanth), rosa rubiginosa (Rosa Mosqueta) rose hip seed oil*, inositol, methionine, cysteine, aesculus hippocastanum (horse chestnut) extract, equisetum hyemale (horsetail) extract, tussilago farfara (coltsfoot) extract, urtica dioica (nettle) extract, linoleic acid, biotin, glycerin, citrus grandis (grapefruit) extract, alcohol denat. (38b, lavender*), tocopheryl acetate, hamamelis virginiana water, ascorbic acid, glycine soja (soybean) oil, daucus carota sativa (carrot) root extract, beta-carotene, myroxylon balsamum (balsam) oil, citrus sinensis (sweet orange) oil*.

Shea Moisture Souffle:
Aqueous Infusion of Agave Teqilana Leaf Extract and Sugar Cane Extract , Pectin , Vegetable Glycerin , Adansonia Digitata Pulp Extract (Baobab) , Cocos Nucifera Oil (Coconut) , Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea Butter) , Panthenol (Pro-Vitamin B-5) , Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Extract , Tocopherol (Vitamin E) , Linum Usitatissimum Seed Extract (Linseed/Flax) , Hibiscus Sabdariffa Extract , Potassium Sorbate , Proprietary Essential Oil Blend

These all caused the same reaction: protein overload feeling, dry frizzy hair, tangles, really brittle strands. The same thing happens with the Nature's Gate Tea Tree conditioner when I use it as a RO, but it takes a few days for the effect. This product made me think I was protein sensitive, because it also has protein. But I have since used protein with little issue.

Nature's Gate TT condish:
Water, Glycerin (Vegetable), Stearyl Alcohol (Vegetable Derived), Cetyl Alcohol (Vegetable Derived), Stearalkonium Chloride (Vegetable Derived), Carthamus Tinctorius (Safflower) Seed Oil, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride (Vegetable Derived), Benzyl Alcohol, Melaleuca Alternifolia (Tea Tree) Leaf Oil, Panthenol, Hydrolyzed Soy Protein, Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein, Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil, Borago Officinalis (Borage) Seed Oil, Tocopherol (Vitamin E), Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C), Hamamelis Virginiana (Witch Hazel) Extract, Melissa Officinalis (Balm Mint) Extract, Quillaja Saponaria (Soap Bark) Bark Extract, Chamomilla Recutita (Matricaria) Flower Extract, Urtica Dioica (Nettle) Extract, Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Leaf Extract, Humulus Lupulus (Hops) Extract, Nasturtium Officinale (Watercress) Flower/Leaf Extract, Ascorbyl Palmitate, Hydroxyethylcellulose (Plant Derived), Potassium Sorbate, Citric Acid (Vegetable Derived), Fragrance

The only other two products I've been using that have panthenol in them are the SM moisture retention shampoo and the SM raw shea condish. The poo I only use once or twice a week, and the raw shea conditioner I use 1x/week as a DT. I'm starting to worry that I have breakage at near my roots though, so I am concerned about the low poo.

Maybe I'm overthinking this and should just accept that these products don't work for me. I just wish I knew why I have such an instant reaction to the gels. I'm struggling to form a plan of action to get back on track.

Also, I had a much much worse reaction to the souffle when I used the nature's gate conditioner followed by the souffle. I tried the souffle another time and had a decent hair day, but when I used it two days in a row I ended up with the same brittle, tangly disaster.

And sorry for the novel I'm writing here... it's helping me think things out!

I can't use it in conditioners, either. That ingredient sucks for me big time.

Do you notice the effects right away after it dries? Or do you notice it later in the day?

I have had some issues with curtains ingredients - aloe, for example, my hair HATES on it's own, but in combination with other things it seems to LOVE it.

I know some people have issues with certain proteins, while other proteins their hair loves - maybe look at the types of proteins and see if there is a relation there?

Also, are you getting enough balance between protein and moisture? Are you sealing at all?

What is your porosity?

I have fine, medium porosity hair.

I have not been sealing because I have had a lot of problems with overconditioning (until now, anyway). I spent this winter just using a leave-in conditioner followed by a gel with no issues with dryness. Dews have recently gone from in the teens during the winter to high 30s in the past week or so.

I notice the effects of these stylers as my hair dries, and it gets worse throughout the day.

I think I might hit up my SM raw shea conditioner as a DT tonight and see if that helps. It does have panthenol, but I haven't noticed an issue with it in the past. Usually it gets my hair very moisturized (I can only use it once a week or my hair gets limp). I'll see if that helps.

I'm wondering about your porosity, bc you sound highly porous.

I am fine and highly porous, and my hair LOVES protein and moisture. I need a ton of both.

I have to seal. Just HAVE to. With mineral, which is the best sealing agent - though some people's hair doesn't like it.

I do have to be careful with humectants in low dews.

The only reason I mention this is because I THINK if you have problems with an ingredient, you see that pretty much right away. The "getting worse as the day goes on" thing makes me think your hair is losing moisture throughout the day - as mine does.

Just some food for thought!

Combining an ingredient with another that it doesn't like work with (in your hair) can cause major havoc. I've even had products I could use one place that were awful when I moved somewhere where the water was different.

I know that may give you more questions than answers... :/ And maybe I'm totally off!! But just some things to think through.

GL!
