Why do so many curlies love FSG?

And are there some of you for whom it does NOT work?

mhen76 03-18-2013 07:48 AM

I like it because it gives me great definition and hold without being too heavy for my fine hair. I also like that I can customize it depending on the season and my needs - sometimes adding honey or glycerin or protein or epsom salts or oil or .............. It's cheap and simple to make. It's a keeper for me!

I second this. It behaves like no other product I've tried so far. It gives great definition with very little crunch. I also love that it is natural and I can control exactly what I put in it. And it's fun to experiment with add-ins and new recipes!
And, best of all, it's cheap! So if/when I want to try a new variation of FSG, I'm not shelling out $20 for a new product that may or may not work in my hair.

Ditto all of that, though my porous hair drinks products, so I usually need a hard hold gel over it.

I kind of feel like these are silly questions. It a cheap product to make and it gives some people the look they want.

There always going to be people products don't work for. I find flax seed gel does nothing for my hair. In fact it makes it look worse and unclumps it.

I love, love, love FSG! I made it for the first time a little over a week ago after considering it for weeks...I wish I wouldn't have waited! It gives me great definition without weighing my hair down or making it crunchy. It's so customizable and simple to make. I'm sure there are some who are not fans of FSG, as with anything else, but this is one thing you can try 5 different ways for less money than would be spent trying out one $20 product. It is DEFINITELY worth a shot in my opinion!

Questions about FSG are never silly. :D I love it for all the same reasons everybody else has listed. With me it seems the more natural the product the more my hair takes to it. My hair is a bushy little hipster.

I don't think they are silly questions. Sometimes there will be a product or routine that everyone raves about so if it doesn't work for someone, they might wonder why that is.
Flax seed gel didn't have enough hold for me and made my hair feel producty. I still love my LA Looks Sport gel.

It doesn't do anything for my daughters and my hair, no hold no definition just a stringy mess. I am experimenting with Chia seeds right now, I do hope that they work:-)

I think I probably would like FSG, but i haven't used it much. My first attempt at making FSG came out pretty good - I also split the batch in half and added conditioner to make a cream gel. After that, haven't been able to make a consistent batch - either comes out too runny or too thick. I liked the results I got the first time, but I haven't felt like spending the time trying to figure out how to repeat my results. I also worry about bacteria, etc. I ordered some preservative to add to it, but haven't used it yet because i don't have the kind of scale to properly measure the amounts i need. So, I like FSG (I think) but I don't like having to make it. It's easier for me to use something already made. I have considered ordering some from someone who makes it (like Botticelli botanicals or one of those other etsy shops) but haven't gotten around to it.

For me, it didn't have enough hold and I really didn't like the smell of it. I fixed the second issue with an essential oil (Red Currant & Thyme Tea). For more hold, I just need to experiment with additives like aloe, agave, epsom salt, etc., Or, like Jas and others, I could just use a harder hold gel on top.

Being a PJ though, reading about it (again) has made me want to whip up another batch!
