Is anyone else's hair only curly when styling products are added?

Yes I also have a tight curl pattern and my hair is very undefined without product. Much less defined than the second pic there. Barely a curl pattern at all. But when it's wet there are curls everywhere. I dont have a picture of me without product but this first picture is my hair brushed out which is almost the same thing lol and the second is my hair styled.

Loving my hair!!!
It is frustrating for sure! If I use no product I still get the ringlets on the bottom, but the canopy is a fizzy mess of undefined curls. But, if I look at each strand, I can see them curling individually. Like the clumps won't stick together.

The first is product and the second is without product.

I have the same issue and if I brush it AHHHH!!! It's usually just frizzy poofy and curl less without product but I still have a lot of damage hair that I don't want to completely cut off since I like my length. I think it might be a regular issue on ppl with 3a hair and looser. The tighter the curl the harder it is to disappear but you still need help with frizz and definition. Since I consider it sort of a trait I wouldn't think of it as cheating. It's just something that happens. I haven't tried condition only styling and might give it a try next time.

I was thinking about this today. Gel makes it so coily and defined, but soaking wet it's just a few curls and frizz. Weird.

I'm happy to see that it's not just my hair that acts like this
Medium texture, normal porosity, normal elasticity
instead of asking: "Is anyone else's hair only curly when styling products are added?" the question should really be "is anyones hair really truly pin straight without styling product and/or heat appliances and chemical straighteners added?"

then we would get to the real state of affairs. If everyone else's hair was so perfectly and effortlessly straight as is implied, then where is the need for curling irons, perms, flat irons etc? I think almost everyones hair has some bend to it if left in it totally 100% natural state. We are probably all curlies to some degree. Even people who have lovely shiny glossy silky straight hair usually give it a helping hand to have it look that way. There is no stigma attached to them for their efforts to keep their hair 'neat and tidy' with these chemicals, sprays and smoothers and appliances but there seems to be a double standard that curlies are only curlies if they do nothing to their hair and that it should be curl perfection right out of bed. My question is, are straighties really straight right out of bed themselves? No they are not, plenty of round brushes and blow dryers and curling irons, flat irons putting a drain on the electrical grid every single morning not to mention the serums, sprays and other gook they use to give the impression that their hair is "naturally straight". I beg to differ, so what are a few styling products in comparison, for curlies to manage their hair? Most of us don't use high heat and tortuous tools to manage our hair. We are virtUous in comparison to the damage inflicted by the straighties...

JMO, happy days everyone.

my hair is always poofy unless I put all 3 of my things in my hair. leave in, oil, mouse. My hair is super frizzy when I out my hair back too without anything. I have to smooth a gel over my head to make it smooth.
do you think our hair just got use to those products it doesn't know how to act when there's nothing in it?
I'm one of those strange people out there, that has straight hair when I do not style it. It could be considered stick straight except my lower layer on the left side flips out sometimes. In fact, the majority of my friends and family think I have straight hair.

Normal school days, I just wash my hair at night, and let it air dry, sleep on it. I don't have to worry about getting up in the morning and styling and taking forever to get to class. But if I have time on the weekends, I love to style my hair, because it is a complete 180. 3a curls with some silly 3c springs that pop out around my crown (those I actually have all time, and they look silly sticking out when my hair is straight ).

My hair is wavy when wet or productless, and my front layers will dry almost straight if I don't do anything to them. I would be perfectly happy styling it wavy, but as soon as I scrunch it at all, it goes curly. I feel like an oddity, because my productless pattern is vastly different than my styled pattern, but I don't have to manipulate it or use a ton of products to "force" it curly. My hair seems to be all or nothing - if I try to style it/let it dry as a wavy, it ends up frizzy and stringy. If I scrunch it, it spirals up and I get shrinkage and believe it or not it's frustrating because I'm trying to grow my hair out, and I'd like to wear it wavy sometime because it's longer that way.

my hair is just wavy, however not nice waves, frizzy and poofy, like a nest, however it is really soft without product (depending on whether i've deep conditioned and applied a lot of conditioner)
My hair will dry wavy without styling products, but will start to fluff and frizz throughout the day. My main issue is if I don't scrunch it will dry straight wavy, like it can't make up its mind. I went to get a haircut and the stylist was trying to style my hair wavy (she kept saying curly) but she combed it way too much and because my hair is high porosity it was nearly dry by the time she started scrunching in gel. Lol! My hair was a mess! Needless to say I have to start scrunching right out of the shower after the last comb or it will dry really funny! Sometimes I like the loose wave I get from no product though, so I just scrunch and let air dry, then use LOOB or something to hold when dry.

I do have many friends whose hair will dry stick straight without product or flat ironing. I went to my friend's house and her daughter's hair was so straight I had to ask. She sighed and said no, she's got my stick straight hair! I wish we had curly like yours. Straight hair is so boring. Lol. I thought it looked gorgeous though!

My hair loves protein, plopping, and diffusing! Trying to find a way to style and air dry.

Actually when we were talking about the differences between straight hair and curly she told me she positively has to shampoo her hair everyday because of the amount of oil her scalp produces. Also she brushes her hair often and keeps a travel sized one in her purse. It's got me wondering about this slight flip at her ends I see sometimes and what would happen if she didn't brush so much.

Oh, and if you want your hair to dry wavy and not puffy, have you tried raking your products in and letting dry that way? Or raking them in and scrunching once to maybe jump start the wave, then smoothing down? Also my second and third day hair is usually 2C wavy (how I wake up) and I just switch it back to 3A curly. But I reserve the option not to do so. For variety!

My hair is fine and thin and I can't do 2nd day hair ever, it's a mess. If I don't want to re-wet & it's not too tangled, I put it up.

Because its fine & thin it dries really flat if I don't diffuse. I have tried just letting it air dry without too much manipulation but it goes stringy. I don't mind soft & some fluff, I'd rather not have totally flat & stringy. I haven't mastered the wavy look yet but I'm not giving up lol!

My straight haired friend is not Asian & has fine thin hair like me. She has to wash hers every day too. But really, so do I. If I go longer than 36 hrs it gets greasy. Even when I straightened I only did it once a week or so, the other days I just put it up because I didn't want to straighten it every 36 hrs!

Wow I could never tell your hair ever got flat or stringy from your pictures. Your curls are so clumpy and fat! Yup, don't give up. I'm sure there's got to be a method you might use to wear it wavy and maybe even without diffusing. If there's one thing I learn every time I pop into the 2 forum it's where there's a wave there's a way.

Dusa- thanks! My pictures are all of my best days lol, and all diffused. If I don't diffuse it's definitely flat at the crown. I tried going wavy the other day. I raked & then twisted it up into a turban instead of a plop. Let it sit for a while & then diffused the roots only. The result was a stringy crappy mess. I just can't do it :-/ it's pretty when I do it curly & I feel blessed to have the natural clumps & spirals I have but I just don't like the shrinkage right now, and the lack of an "in between." It's either flat & stringy, or big & poofy & clumpy. It's an awkward length & I will probably just continue to put it up & leave it alone until it grows a few more inches, which might be Christmas at this rate :sigh:
