Is anyone else's hair only curly when styling products are added?

Like Tree32Likes

I've noticed that whenever I do a DT my hair is just wavy, and rather poofy with much less definition than when I use styling products like gel. When I use gel or another styling product similar to it, that's the only time my hair is really curly. I wish my hair was always curly naturally. Does anyone else have this issue? It makes me not feel like a "real" curly

I know what you mean. With products and/or plopping/diffusing i'm a 3a but when i dont do anything with my hair it' a big, poofy 2bc mess..

This reminds me of the wavy impostor thread in the 2 section. I love that thread.

Spin off thread: The wavy imposter, it is not just you.

A lot of people do best with styling products to bring out the look that they want in their hair. My hair looks worse without styling products too. When I just use leave in conditioner, my hair doesn't clump as well and I get frizz. It might also depend on how you've treated it in the past. I use to never condition, so my hair was constantly dry and frizztastic. Also, heat damage can make it flatter too. The more I used conditioner to moisturize and avoided heat, the more my hair became healthy and held it's curl pattern better. Another thing that can make hair seem less curly is if you hair is all about the same length because it can weigh itself down. Layers really help curls pop up better.

That said, if your curl pattern doesn't really tighten up, it can be nice to have wavy hair or hair that's kind of in-between based on the season. Like, wavy hair isn't some poofy, annoying conciliation prize for not having bouncier ringlets. It isn't curly hair that's missed the mark. Wavy hair is lovely in it's own right. I have 2b/c hair, and at first I really disliked that it wasn't curly. I did a ton of curl enhancing things to try to bump it up to the 3 level. But now, I find that it's much easier to style and better suited to me to just wear it without as much manipulation. A lot of people come here trying to make their curl pattern more 3-like, and sometimes it's just tons easier to be happy with a looser pattern.

Me too. I get some spots that curl with or without, but for the most part it's a 2b/c mix without product, and a 3a with b parts with. Annoying

Thanks guys. It's good to see that it's not just me who has this issue. I feel like a curly imposter when I don't put any styling products. I wouldn't mind wavy hair if it wasn't a frizzy, poofy mess when it is wavy. I just don't like that without products I have "bad" hair (what I perceive as bad, meaning just a frizz ball)

I tend to think one's curl pattern is what it is regardless of product use or not. What I think is happening is the tendency for the hair to not clump, so the curl pattern is not as obvious without product. This leads to poofiness. IMHO product does not change what you have, but rather aids the hair in clumping so it becomes apparent.

My hair is "less curly" without products. I blame my porosity.

I used to think my hair was just barely wavy unless I used products. Then I realized after going CG it was all in the health of your hair and the technique you use to style it. Even with NO gel or anything, if you do the same techniques just with condish your hair (when healthy) will be curlier than if your hair was "fried" and you used no real curly styling techniques.

My hair needs help too. It's fine so it wont hold the curl for long. I wouldn't feel guilty, look at the amount of products available for straight hair. Stuff to make it shinier, lay straighter, stop flyways, control frizz. Curly or straight or in between, people are always going to need/want help with their hair. That's why the hair is a multi-million dollar industry.
Hair: lots of fine 2c/3a
Length: Mid back
Shampoo:Shea moisture coconut hibiscus
Cond:, suave naturals coconut
Post condition/Leave in: Shea moisture smoothie
HG:L'oreal evercurl gel. AG: Recoil,
With enough effort- the perfect combination of multiple products and techniques- I can make my hair look curly and "perfect." This frustrates me though because I don't want to have to completely manipulate every aspect of my hair for it to look good, I want t work with what I actually have. My hair is a 2b/2cish when I use minimal product and scrunching. I'd rather leave it wavy than put all that effort into making it more curly. It's more practical for me.
Yup me too. If I do absolutely nothing, I have coarse frizzy waves. If I do my "routine", I can get soft 3a spirals.

I don't think it's cheating. I think of it as "Hey, my hair can do this without a curling iron." Cheating for me would be using a flat iron and trying to pass myself off as straight. Besides don't some of the 3s and plenty of the 4s have a variation of the same problem? A lot of curlies need product to define and control the curl, otherwise it gets poofy and less defined. I know I have a wavy 'fro without product. Well, at least I used to before I went CG. Now I do the naked hair test (not completely naked since I use a little leave in, just not gel) and I can still retain some curls but I highly doubt that if I took my gel free hair out for a spin outdoors that it would retain its shape for very long. It would probably frizz. But that's cool. I'm just thankful there are so many great products out there. I still dream of the day I can do conditioner only styling though. . .

I think this is more of a loose curl issue, but us tighter curls are hardly without out dependencies. My curls are in full force in the shower, but I need product for them to dry as neat. It's the difference between this:

and this:

Which is sort of what my hair looks like by the time I'm off to bed and have played with it since I got off work...except worse cause it's shorter. I'm such a bad curly .

It seems like alot of us have this problem. For me, dry hair equals straight hair. If i dont use enough leave in moisturiser and conditioner my hair can go down to 2a, if its healthy it's 3a. It also depends on the weather. Its very annoying and frustrating.
