Diffusing tips, routines?

Okay, I tried the video diffusing technique this morning, and the results are...not awful. I definitely have more volume than usual, which I like - but I also have more frizz, which I don't like. However, I think that the frizz for me is a result of how I applied products (out of the shower, in damp hair, as opposed to in the shower, in sopping wet hair). My hair started to frizz up before I even started diffusing, because it wasn't wet enough to clump together. The flipping and constant touching with the dryer didn't seem to hurt my hair much - the ends, oddly enough, are the most defined, while the roots are the frizziest. But I have good curl formation and lots of root lift, which I don't normally get.

I diffused for 20 minutes, which is forever for me, and my hair was still damp when I clipped the roots (speaking of which, I only have the little metal clips, and they definitely are not good for this method, as they totally got lost in all the volume and were impossible to remove - I need to look into those CHS clamps that everyone seems to love so much). As it air-dried the rest of the way, some of the volume deflated a little, but I can get that back by ruffling the roots from underneath, like she shows in the video at the end. I do think I need to diffuse a little longer, though, especially if I apply products in the shower and it's wetter to begin with.

I'm going to try again this week, this time applying products in sopping hair in the shower, plopping just long enough to get dressed, then follow the diffusing routine again and see what happens. I will report back with the results of experiment number 2!

Oh I forgot to ask...dose anyone use gloves for applying product??? This might help reduce the frizz factor...I girst apply product with just my hands...so I can feel how coated my hair is...then I put gloves on and do modified ss method to re clump..and scrunch scrunch my hair then plop...since there is more touching and manipulation involved with this routine...using gloves might help...just a thought

Weekly gelatin protien treatments.
On further reflection I like how this looks, I think maybe I need to apply products on slightly wetter hair, but the volume is great.

That curly hair in the video is to die for.
She got me hooked on the CHS clamps, though Conair nes are almost as cheap and will work the same if your hair is long. Mine is short and layered and Grow, hair, grow!
Also, I now use CurlKeeper almost every time and with almost everything else.
I love that stuff and the only thing wrong is that I do not look like V. Meza!!!

I found that applying a bit extra product to allow for the excess to be blotted up with tshirts/plopping helped me a lot. I use cheap gel, so that may not work for those who splurge though. I like to go through a few tshirts until none of them are getting soaked through anymore and then plop. I also agree with you that the clips suck for flipping. I diffuse until I get crunch rather than air dry halfway through. If I go outside with partially damp hair, its like the humidity sneaks in or something... I NEED that gel cast or else all bets are off. So I think diffusing a little longer could help you keep some of that volume. Can't wait to hear about experiment #2
Reporting in. Flipping = frizz. Not much since I stopped early and got discouraged and just pixied the rest of the way through. (Also the finger twirling didn't work out either. Actually stretched out my curls.) Here is what I am thinking. I style my first day hair using mostly leave in conditioner (used a blend of three leave ins today actually) and a pinch of KCCC to define and set the curl because my curl pattern is strong enough and all I need is moisture, not too much hold. But I need better hold if I'm going to be flipping around my hair when I style it. Next time I'm going to either double/triple up on the KCCC or switch to CG pattern pusha maybe. What do you guys think?

I'm not sure it'll work for coarse hair as well since Meza's is fine but it is worth a shot and it's actually recommended for coarse hair by Tiffany the Curl Whisperer on her pinterest. I hope my hair likes it. She's so picky.

My hair is freakish in that it dries very fast. It's just naturally highly porous. I have to rewet my hair sometimes when I style it. Usually it's no more than a two hour wait with KCCC but I suspect it'd be longer if I used much more KCCC than I usually do. The amount of product I use right now is minimal. Shelly, have you tried Uncle Funky Daughter's Curly Magic? There's a store not too far from an awesome outdoor mall I frequent that actually sells it so I plan to pick some up next time I go. It's supposed to be just like KCCC without the increase in drying time and easier to apply. Bit lighter or something. I'll be sure to post a review once I try it!

That is so funny how hair reacts differently because Pattern Pusha is like. . . the most hold I can tolerate. It doesn't leave me super crunchy but it is the strongest styling product I use. I really like it but I don't love it because it's not as moisturizing as KCCC. But my hair looks the same if I use that or the KCCC so. . .

And Shelly you've sold me on the okra gel. I can't wait to make it. I hope they have okra at the market. Gonna check today.

Everyone, please keep the experimenting and reporting about diffusing going. So many things to try! My shortest layers aren't long enough for a successful plop-dry though.

Marci, I will probably rewet my hair and try experiment #2 tomorrow. I normally go 3-4 days without wetting my hair (not because I can get great 2nd/3rd/4th day hair, but rather because I'm too lazy to go through the whole rigmarole more than twice a week), but this new diffusing method has me wanting to play. :-). As much as I want to use different products tomorrow, I'm gonna stick with the same ones I used today, but do my normal application to wet hair in the shower routine so I can compare the results to today and know what the variable was if it turns out differently.

Yoshimi (autocorrect changed your name to "Yo shims", lol!), I think your hair looks great in both photos, just two very different looks. I, myself, like volume and more ringlets, so I like your hair in today's picture. I hope mine looks something like that tomorrow!

Dusalocks, funny you mention UFDCM - I was just at a huge beauty supply store yesterday (love that place, they carry EVERYTHING, even CJ!) and saw the UFD line CHS lines. I was so tempted to get some Curly Magic, but the ingredients looked so much like KCCC and I already had $90 of products in my basket, so I passed on it. As much as I love what KCCC does for my hair, I have a hard time distributing it, and it forms its gel cast too quickly, before my curls have shed enough water to shrink as much as I like. If UFDCM is like KCCC but without those issues, it could be an HG for me. I was tempted by the Curl Keeper, too. Never tried that before, though, and didn't want to buy a huge bottle.

Thanks guys, I decided it needs to be wetter, but still raked through, I probably need a better diffuser too, that will have to wait a couple if weeks, and I'll have to get hold of some curl keeper to try.

Will see how the wetter product approach works out tomorrow.

OK...washed my hair and did the routine....It's definitely more frizzy...good volume...clumps look pretty good...I'll know better in the morning...since I leave my hair crunchy to pineapple over night...So what I did this time...was used my same TJ TTT shampoo...then used Aubrey GPB conditioner...then on soaking wet hair applied okra gel first upside down...then side to side...added more water via SS method...then plopped with flour sack towel for few mins...towel was soaked so I used another one, but scrunched hair first then plopped again for 20mins...then diffused like video for 20mins...then clipped roots...I can tell first thing...my diffuser stinks!!!! I am not able to cup my hair like she dose....and may add more okra gel(like she dose) before diffusing to help with frizzy...hmmm will try again in couple days...

Well, ladies, today was experiment #2 with this diffusing method, and I must say that my hair turned out about a million times better. Even though I said I was going to use the same products as yesterday, I totally didn't - I had used SM souffle yesterday, and my hair felt so gross and producty this morning that I couldn't bring myself to use it again. So instead, I used my trusty combo of CJAO as my LI, topped with a KCCC/SS CEJ cocktail - smoothed, raked, and finally scrunched into wet hair in the shower. Plopped for about 2 minutes - just long enough to dry off, brush my teeth, and put on eye cream, then took off the plop towel, scrunched a bit of excess moisture out, and started diffusing. My hair is curly all the way up to the root, and totally defined, hardly any frizzies at all! It's not as clumpy as I usually like, but I hardly care about that, it looks so good otherwise.

I diffused the same amount of time as yesterday, turned out to be about 20 minutes total, and still had slightly damp hair when I left the house. I will try to be brave enough next time to diffuse all the way dry and see how that does. Thank you, Marci, for posting that video! I am happy with my hair today, and that's not something I've said to myself in quite some time now.

I ditched the curl cream as I think it was weighing me down, combed in the gel just after scrunching out excess water. Then used a microfiber to dry further and followed up with more gel.

The curl dropped a lot by the end of the day yesterday, so ill be interested to see how this holds up (though in 60% humidity I don't hold out much hope)

I'm obsessed with Meza's hair, even though I know mine could never look like hers! I do follow her diffusing method, though, and it turns out pretty well. I think I've decided I prefer volume to clumps, and this method definitely gives me volume.

I experimented today using all glycerine free products, but I have to admit I miss my Curl Keeper! I've been scared to use it now that dews are in the low 70's, but I think I'll keep experimenting.
