I am a few months into CG, and have spent a ton of money on products thinking they would help me attain "perfect hair". As a PJ, I love to buy and try new things....but having had a full week of perfect hair every day, with a wide range of dew points (I'm in Florida- so we had a "cold" front with dews in the high 40's, and a "warm" front with dews in the high 60's)....I have finally realized that MY good hair has more to do with technique than products. Every day I have used a different mix of products, never the same, and my hair has looked good ALL week. I am ecstatic!

I guess what I'm trying to say to all the newbies- is work on your technique....and the products are just icing on the cake.

I have a mix of curl types and textures on my head. I have realized that although I *thought* maybe my hair was coarse when I first started, it is actually on the normal side, with some fine parts, and coarse grays, and my density is normal. I also think I'm normal to high porosity.

Until I started CG, I was a FRIZZ BALL. I learned how to condition properly here. I was scared to death of protein b/c again I thought my hair was coarse. After reading and reading, I decided to do IAGirls protein treatment using gelatin with FANTASTIC results.

My "technique" is this (sounds longer than it really is):
Cowash or Low poo (2x/week) with head upside down (helps with keeping loose hairs off your bod!)
Other days just water rinse
Apply dime-sized amount of leave-in OR Jojoba oil and comb with a wide tooth in the shower to detangle and distribute product
Blot with microfiber towel so that it is still a little drippy, dry off my body
Apply EITHER Curl Keeper (3 sections with a dime sized blob) OR any one of my Curl enhancing creams (one dime size blob); smooth on top and bottom of hair, then scrunch in well
Brush with Denman to distribute and form clumps
Brush crown out & away (thanks Rudeechick)
Scrunch in EITHER mousse, jelly, or gel product. I use a fair amount here, and split hair into 3 sections (Right, left, back): a quarter sized blob of gel, 3-finger dip of jelly, or a golf ball size blob of mousse per section).
Apply a pea-sized amount of gel/ small squirt of mousse or a single finger dip of jelly, rub hands together, and smooth over canopy
Plop for no more than 10 minutes
Diffuse til crunchy but not 100% dry
Scrunch in a little more gel or gelly (like pea-sized) on ends and face framing layers only
Let air dry until I get to work or diffuse til dry
SOTC with Jane Carter Nourish and Shine

I still haven't mastered second day hair, but I have so much fun doing my hair that I enjoy the daily refresh. I will say, that I would have been able to walk out without wetting my hair the past couple mornings, but didn't go for it.

I hope this helps someone.

Very interesting that you bring this up. I've been CG for 5 years(?) and I remember for the first 3 years or so, every product and combo I tried on my hair gave me great hair regardless of the wether or dew points and I live in a very dry climate. I continued trying a variety of products and then techniques..I began to notice things changed a little. I was keeping a journal of everything I tried (wonder where that is now?) but eventually quit writing things down. Other than harsh sulfates and silicones, my hair isn't really picky with ingredients. There has only been one product that made my hair feel terrible, like Barbie hair , so I got rid of it. I've never really had issues with build up for the most part.
I've been trying to remember what I was doing differently. If I remember correctly, my routine was similar to yours..

cleanse (no poo, low poo or shampoo bar) and condition,
apply leave in and plop for a few minutes while I got dressed,
apply my curl cream or base styler, comb or use a denman brush and scrunch with a T-shirt/MF towel
**add my gel and plop another 5 minutes or so
diffuse (85-90%)
air dry and SOTC...done.
**i have at times used only one "styling" product instead of a curl cream+gel**

I'm pretty positive that was when I had my best hair days. I have revisited this routine again. For me it seems that scrunching with a T-shirt or MF towel in between helps "set in" the products. Otherwise my hair would take a very long time to dry and would sometimes feel producty or just wouldn't do well. Almost like the products would sit on my hair and not get absorbed properly. My hair can actually take heavy and rich products with no problems otherwise. I'm glad you brought this up. Thank you!
There are products that I prefer and will stick with now that I've experimented but do believe that technique plays a very large part of the end results for me.

I have to agree! Realized Tuesday morning that my hair really likes the overnight plop! I had been trying some wash n go days and bought a bonnet dryer for those days but was not having good days at all. But after the plop my hair was very happy! Glad I was paying attention! Guess my DH will just have to deal with the shirt on my head

I totally agree, but the right products don't hurt either. My porous hair needs completely different products depending on the season and it also looks very different... BUT techniques are the same.

Yup. everything you said. But I still think I am gonna steer clear of the VO5 with sea salt and the salicylate...and nix the 'heavy cones'...

Used my routine last night with GDLI+MopC cream+Curlkeeper/biotera= fabulous results!!! That with the dews being zero and under.

Had to add, my hair hates the super soaker method . I learned that the hard way after several failed attempts, no matter what products I used.
I have tried applying products in the shower as well like the Jessicurl demos= a total fail for me. So no super soaking for me or applying products in sopping wet or dripping hair, except for my leave in. My hair is still very wet when I apply my products but not soaked (if that makes sense). Very rarely do I need to add more water when applying a product, but if I do, I will spritz just a little water..just enough that my hair doesn't feel/look dry.

My hair is similar. If I put product on too-wet hair, I get less definition and possible poof.

As a side note, this week my goal is 2nd day hair (one success so far!). I've been having success using curl keeper or aloe Vera gel on dry hair to refresh/ smooth frizzies!

I saw in your signature that you have BB's Mudd....I ordered some last week, can't wait for it to arrive! How do you like it? Do you use it like a gel or curl keeper?

I will have to try the AVG and Curlkeeper as a 2nd day refresher myself. I have had success with using FSG as a refresher on dry hair.

this is an interesting post. cause i find that im the opposit. ok so i do have a simple routine, and my hair only likes simple things, and most pretty natural. lately my curls have been really baaaad, so i thought id try same mousse, cause gel doesnt work for me.
im still trying to find the right techquic for 2 n 3rd day hair, have great succsess the first time, though i think that was cause i just henna'd the first time and i think my hair was on a henna high lol

my hair: 3c, high porosity, high density and coarse hair (i think i finally figured that all out)
my hair loves conditioner only styling!
my hair goal length is bra strap length when curly.

I also blog about my hair journey, please feel free to read and comment/ask questions http://www.naturallycurly.com/blogs/...air-blogs/2494
I find that the technique...and the order in which I put the products in my hair....is what works best for me. I have found some products though that just didnt work at all though. The weather doesn't seem to affect how my hair turns out though. I guess I'll have to wait until the hot days of summer to find out!
