Trouble with Leave-Ins

So I've been having some trouble finding a good leave-in (granted I've only tried 2 so far).

My hair is 2B/C, low porosity, fine. Seems to like protein so far (gelatin treatment). Fairly easily over-conditioned.

CJ Curl Assurance Smoothing Lotion: LOVE the slip and detangle, but I feel like it's just too much for my hair (maybe too much moisture?). It seems to make my hair flat, especially at the roots, and if I use any more than a micro-drop, my hair looks oily and just kind of...blah. I was getting good clumps with this one, though. Lately, I've been adding some to my RO instead.

Design Essentials Naturals Daily Moisturizing Lotion: I got this as a sample and decided to give it a try. I like that it contains protein, but IMMEDIATELY after I apply this, my hair gets stringy. I apply my LI while still in the shower to soaking wet hair, and this will immediately start to break up my waves/curls into tiny clumps, even if I smooth it on. To make matters worse, it seems to make my hair fluffy after it dries.

Can anyone offer me some advice? Or possibly suggest a LI that you like to use? I've been thinking about giving KCKT a try. This has become pretty frustrating :goofy:

I'm using the Yes To Carrots leave-in and really like it. My hair was horribly dry, and as soon as I put this in, it was just heaven. I could hear the angels sing. Anyhow, I'm not sure if it would be too moisturizing because you did say your hair gets over-conditioned easily. I use it every second day, and so far I don't think my hair is too moisturized. On the plus side, it has protein! At first I put in a small amount because this product really did make my hair soft and awesome, but now that I don't think it over-conditions it, I put in about double than I did before. :) And we seem to have similar properties.

I have to admit though that I sometimes think this leave-in may be weighing down my hair... I might try a naked hair test and report back. :-o

I've been hearing good things about Yes to Carrots, so I have been wanting to try it out! Maybe the leave-in would be a good place to start :) thank you for your input!

I need to do a naked hair test also! I feel like I really need to sort out exactly how each of the products I'm using are working for me. I'm really beginning to wonder if a LI may be too much for me in general. I may have to take an even more minimalistic approach :/

Please do let me know how your "naked" hair does! I'd love to hear how it goes :)

What about spray on leave-ins? They may work better for you. I know curls line has one at Target that has protein. I wish I could recommend something but my hair's the exact opposite; it doesn't like much protein and can suck up even the thickest conditioner like its nothing. Spray on leave-ins do nothing for me. But they might work for you. :)

I did a naked test last weekend and it was SCARY!!! My leave ins are in my sig, but my hair props are different than yours...

Your hair sounds a LOT like mine. I also have trouble with leave-ins weighing my hair down and generally making it misbehave. The best one I have found so far is CJ Beauticurls leave-in. Even that I have to use sparingly, especially now that it's warming up here, it's giving me some trouble. I can't really use leave-in when it gets more humid.

I absolutely LOVE kckt as a leave in! My hair is 3a, very fine and high porosity. I only use a pea size amount on my ends cause I hear it can weigh down fine hair. My hair is almost waist length so I smooth it into about the last 4 inches from the bottom. A little goes a looong way with kckt and it is great for detangling!

But isn't it protein free and she said her hair gets over conditioned easily?

I second the CJ Beauticurls leave-in - I love this one. My hair is normal porosity (not low, like yours), so I'm not sure how much difference that will make for you, but I also have fine hair that can also get weighed down. The KCKT didn't weigh my hair down, but it also didn't provide enough moisture (I live in a dry climate). The other leave in I really like is the As I Am leave in (available at Sally's); it's light weight but still moisturizing. I also love Curly Kinks satin roots - I haven't used it as much in the winter because I have to stay away from glycerin, but its a great leave in - not heavy, just the right amount of moisture, good slip.

I have been trying the Yes To Carrots leave-in recently too! I really like the ingredients, and my hair seems to like it in really low dews. I think it might be weighing my hair down a little, though. I'm worried it won't work out once it gets warmer and more humid (if that ever happens... longest winter ever!)

Naked hair tests are disasters for me. I just end up with a giant poof-ball, because I can't stop myself from running my fingers through my hair as it air dries. :-|

ETA: I have also liked the regular Yes To Carrots pampering conditioner as a leave-in. It is much lighter than the YTC leave-in. It has some salts in it, which can be a little drying, but since my hair gets overconditioned easily I feel like this helps sometimes.

I have similar hair to the OP - fine/low-po/easily overmoisturized. My question is: are you sure you need a leave-in? I don't personally use one because I found them all to be too heavy and to weigh my hair down as you described, with flat roots.

I low-poo or co-wash, use my RO, and then work KCCC through my hair *in the shower*, then quickly rinse with cool water to distribute it. This has worked far better for me, in terms of softness and definition, than any leave-in. So maybe experiment with not using one, or using a lighter product that still adds some moisture and definition instead of a "real" leave-in?

JamfoW 03-28-2013 04:54 PM

Thank you for all of the suggestions! I do think that using a LI is just too much product weight for my hair. Today, I used Ouidad Curl Quencher (I got it as a sample) and it worked out really well! It worked like a cross between a curl cream and a LI for me, which is what I wanted. I got great clumps, good definition, and my hair was soft but not over-conditioned. It helped to cut down on frizz, and I had great volume!! I'm going to try it out a couple more times...hopefully the awesome result today wasn't a fluke! Super happy!:D

Here's a picture of the results (had to switch to my phone to upload). Sorry about the horrible look on my face LOL.

Your hair looks really nice. I always make a weird face when I photograph myself...

JamfoW 03-28-2013 05:35 PM

Thank you!!!

I was in the waiting room for my son's physical therapy, so I was trying to be inconspicuous taking the picture of myself hahaha! :laughing8:

Thank you for the suggestion! I've seen this line at Target and wondered whether or not it was any good. I may pick up some of the spray LI just to see how it works out. I'm also looking for something to help me with second day hair, so maybe this will be a good refresher :)

I'll put in a plug for Giovanni Direct Leave-In. My hair really likes it, and it contains protein.

omgstopit 03-30-2013 12:34 PM

I'm using the SM moisture retention conditioner as a leave in and does my hair ever like it. Plus it's on sale in Target right now :S

It also is deceitfully light, so much that I was afraid it wouldn't suit my ever-hungry hair. It has a bunch of oils though, so have a read of the ingredients before you try it, if you are.

JamfoW 03-30-2013 01:46 PM

I've heard good things about Giovanni too! I;m gonna read some reviews on it.

I think the oils in SM might be too heavy for my hair. I'm low-po, so oils tend to just ind of "sit" on my hair.

So many decisions!

I'm going to go ahead and keep using the Ouidad Curl Quencher. I'm a little disappointed though, because I got it as a sample with my Curl Mart order...but it's not sold on Curl Mart??!!!! So weird!
