Is your family curly too?

My two sisters both have board straight hair as do my dad and mom. I had straight hair until puberty kicked in and then BLAM- crazy poofy hair.My paternal grandmother had curly hair.

Does anyone else in your fam have curly hair? Have you had curls your whole life?

My dad has straight hair. My mom's hair is 3b. My sister used to have pin straight hair until puberty. Now her hair is 3a, I think. She always straightens it but I have been trying to get her to embrace her natural curls. My brother has straight hair also. I guess my sister and I get our hair from our mom. Got those latina curls. ;)

I am the only curly in my mother's family, I do have a niece (father's side) who had curly hair when she was a child, but I don't know if she still has that because I didn't see her for 12 years.

So, the family I still have contact with: only curly...
My mother just doesn't seem to understand my curlyness and keeps on telling me to comb my hair (when dry, I do comb when I'm showering). I've been a curly for less than a month now...

Until I was like 8-9 years old I had short hair (I had a boys haircut) and then it was straight I guess...
Then it started to get really poofy (but I didn't realise I got curly then, it was especially poofy) since my mother brushed and dried my hair without a diffuser... I did realise I had curly hair (but didn't realise it was that curly) when I was 16-17 years old but I still straightened it because I didn't know how to manage it...

Now I'm curly for a bit more than a month (CG since march 8th) and I am turning 22 tomorrow...

We all have the same wave pattern, though my brother chops his wonderful hair to within an inch of its life.

It saddens me.

My mom (caucasion) has board straight hair lol, probably 1b lol. I have my dads(Hispanic) hair. When I was really young I probably had 3c/4a hair but now it's more 3b :)

Curlyminx 04-03-2013 03:11 PM

I'm the only "out" curly. My sister is a wavy. My mom is a 3b, but she straightens. My dad and brother have straight hair. My brother might be a 2A or something, but pretty much straight haired.

My paternal grandmother was a curly and my maternal grandfather was a curly.

Curlyminx 04-03-2013 03:14 PM

Oh. And I became a curly between 3rd and 6th grades.

My mother had wavy-to-curly hair that she constantly permed and bleached, and then brushed out, so I never really knew what her actual hair looked like. In pictures of her as a young woman, it is really beautiful open ringlets, like mine. But as a kid she had these crazy tight ringlets, whereas my hair was stick-straight when I was a kid. My curls kicked in at the end of puberty. Older generations, it's hard to say, since in every photo of a woman in our family, she has some sort of set 'do going on. My maternal grandmother appears to have had very tight ringlets, though.

On my dad's side it's kind of removed from me, and it's just my dad and three half-brothers, so I have no real idea. My nieces all have wavy hair, though. I heard tell that one of my half-brothers once had a waist-length ponytail... maybe I should demand photos. Of all my family, he is the only other auburn kid (the rest are brunettes), so maybe we're real hair twins!

My family is German (Prussian), Italian, and Welsh, FYI. We have Jewish ancestry on both sides, but it's all been mixed together in wonderful mushy soup. I've got tons of very old family photos/tintypes, and most of my ancestors have at least some wave going on. The guys have incredible wavy pompadours in some photos!

Hair color and pattern are so interesting. Even with all our knowledge of genetics, it's still a bit of a surprise to see what someone's hair will do based on their parents.

I like the last line of your siggie, bonsabo. (Didn't realize it wouldn't show up within the quote, though.)

Thanks...8) Partly true, though. My hair looks amazing after being in the ocean, but looks like crud after any "beachy hair ocean surf" spray. So it must like the beach for real.

My mom has stick straight hair, my dad has 3b hair, and my brother has 2c hair that he keeps short so it doesn't show up. Me and my brother had straight hair until puberty, but my dad has had curly hair since he was a baby.

Honestly, I think my mom and sisters have waves and maybe curls burned, blasted, dyed, and straightened...deep down I would bet my curls that if they were to "try" for curls they would have them. So, as of now...I am the only one with brunette waves and curls, they are dry brittle straight haired blondes.

I suspect I had waves/curls all my life. My mom would do all she could to tame my hair--wet brushes, yelling she would shave it all off if I didn't brush it....by pre-teen age I was straightening it everyday. I straightened every other day til I was 27 years old and dyed my hair blonde....just now trying to figure out the curl thing and embracing darker hair.

I am the only one on both my mother's and my father's side of the family with curls. The only other person known to have had curls was my grandma's father on my mother's side. Also, when my grandma got her hair back after chemo, she got a lot of curls whereas she used to have really straight hair.

Both my parents have the straightest hair ever. My mom had fine hair but lots of it. At least, she told me recently that her hairdresser said that.

SVault 04-03-2013 11:54 PM

Both of my kids are..My daughter's hair is more like mine..It's 2C and fine..My son's hair is 3C and medium

I'm the only one with curls, my parents and sister are all wavies. My paternal grandfather had the curls, his daughter got them too. I've had them since I was born.

BlackAngelPlayah 04-04-2013 02:58 AM

I'm the only natural in my family.

My mom's side has fine hair and varying curl patterns. Mostly loose though (3b/c). My dad's side has course curls, but length (as does my mom's. length I mean.)

I have 4a/3c curls/coils/waves. :p

CurlyCutie1394 04-04-2013 04:57 AM

Every one is natural in my family some are curly like me some kinky some loc'd and one that keeps it flat ironed

MCoons91 04-04-2013 06:48 AM

I'm honestly not too sure where the wavy/curly comes from. I think my mom may have been a wavy but her hair is highly damaged and too thinned now to tell. My brother has wavy curly hair. But we have different dads. I DO know where my thick course strands come from though and that's my dads side. My great great grandmother was Cherokee and most of that side of the family has pretty coarse/thick hair. I'd really have to look back at pics though to see who had/has waves.

This is similar for me. Both parents and my brothers have straight hair. I get my curls from my paternal grandmother. The other three grandparents are all straighties too. I have been curly since birth.

AKgirl 04-04-2013 09:52 AM

My dad's hair is naturally very curly and fine. I have his hair, only less curl. His is more of a 3a-3b and mine is 2a-2b.
