Anyone cut their own hair???

Like Tree2Likes

Hey,

Since my last terrible haircut dealing with another stylist who said they are trained to cut curly hair, I have decided to cut my own from now on.

I'm planning on fixing the layers framing my face to start. Anyone have success cutting their hair on their own? Advice?

[[Please don't suggest curly salons or stylists!]]

Thank you!!
Yeah I cut my own hair. I just do split ends, though. I'll have to redo my layers someday, though... but I think it's really easy to cut curly hair, because curly hair doesn't have to have all parts equal like straight hair... tiny mistakes are invisible when cutting curly hair.

Make sure you use a trimming scissor, not a regular scissor (a regular scissor will damage your hair).

At hip length, going for mid-thigh!

I do my own. I do the length and then go back and touch up the layers.

I'm at the point now, though, where I want to go back to my deva stylist. It's been... Going on 2 years, I guess. I think every so often I need something more thorough than I'm capable of. (Especially with my length.)

My last haircut was in november, and altough they didn't do a really bad job, I decided that I probably am more capable myself to cut my hair then those people who don't know my hair and cut it when my hair is wet

Since november I cutted my own hair, but I only did some split ends and my bangs (because there is no need still to cut more).

I think you can really do it yourself. But be carefull: use real hair sciccors (you can buy them on the internet) and: it's more about what you leave on than what you cut off. You can always take more off, but you can't put anything back again.

I second the YouTube videos. I have started cutting my own hair with their help. After the initial cut I wash and style my hair, then take my clumped strands individually and blunt cut the curls ( when they clump I do have curls ending very thin and to a point and cutting that off makes them full and bouncy ...if take makes sense )
Most important don't use the kitchen/craft scissors, I bought my hair scissors at Walmart for under $5.

I cut my own, mainly because I know if someone else was to cut it and mess it up, i'd be terribly upset for a longgg time, and i know If i mess up I won't care=), but lucky as it turns out I'm very good at cutting my own hair.
I've been cutting my own hair for 35+ years. I've done pixies cuts, chin length bobs, trims, layers, v shaped back, etc.
I usually cut it dry, curl by curl, but sometimes I just put it up wet in a ponytail on top of my head and trim the ends off.
I use cheap scissors, some claw clips to keep sections of hair out of the way, and no other equipment is needed.

ditto the youtube videos to help you out.

After I wash my hair, I fix any pieces that look stringy or aren't doing well. I'll just take a strand that is curling badly, then find another strand near it and cut them the same length so they'll curl up together. When I do my bangs/face framing layers, I usually just cut at the front of my hair until I like the shape of them. This last time, I went way too short with my bangs so now I'm growing them out. I agree that, to me, curly hair seems pretty forgiving when it comes to cutting mistakes.

I've always trimmed my own straightened hair but didn't actually CUT my own hair in its natural state until a couple of years ago.

It was not perfect but it turned out a LOT better than most of the hideous haircuts I'd gotten in the past.

Actually, I went to Imago salon in Richmond VA not long after I cut it. The owner herself cut my hair, and apart from a few small gaps (not GAPS like bald spots, but that's what she called them. It's hard to explain but it really was not that bad.)...............she didn't even have to correct much at all. This lady is definitely Deva-trained so it said a lot to me that she didn't even have to correct it that much, and I would feel confident cutting my own hair again.

If I had to choose between an untrained, unknowledgable (is that even a word) stranger and doing it myself, I would DEFINITELY do it myself. I can remember one instance in particular where I could've avoided years of growing-out agony after one of THEEE worst haircuts EVER IN LIFE.....if I'd just had the guts to try cutting it myself.

I agree with using hair-cutting scissors. They can be found in any Sally's, Target or Walmart.

I just did mine this morning and am sooo happy with the results! I used the ponytail method and created an inverted bob. I cut about 6 inches off. My hubby helped do the back. I also trimmed my bangs. It was so easy! I will definitely do it again. More money for products, lol!

Has anyone found any specific YT vids for shaping your entire head of hair? I've trimmed my own hair, which has been fine. Earlier this year I gave myself face-framing layers and trimmed my bangs, and the results were OK, but not great. (I got a little carried away)

I've had three Deva Cuts and haven't had consistent results that were impressive enough to warrant the cost. I live in San Francisco and hair cuts here are painfully expensive, so I'd rather just do it all myself.
