Frustrated with CG products!

I have 2c hair that used to be 3a until I went CG. I have been using DevaCurl products for a few months now. I like the No-Poo and One Condition (I think) but I'm not happy with the styling gels. My hair is less curly than it used to be! I'm wondering if anyone else has experienced that? Also wondering what styling products - under $20 and readily available in Canada - anyone would recommend? I don't care if they are CG at this point. I believe my hair is low porosity and it gets very gunky from products. Thanks!
A lot of people end up moving on from Deva products. There are a bajillion products that are sulfate and cone free and therefore CG. I'm in the US so can't help with specific products, but it is well worth it to read through the info on this and the livecurlylivefree site and read ingredient labels. From there it is all about finding what works for you.

The best way to choose ingredients/products is by hair properties. Here's a link to help you with yours Live Curly Live Free - Curly Hair Basics Once you determine your properties, you can look for people with similar hair and see what they use (in signature.) It's the best place to start.

Around here, Deva is a love/hate line. Many of use start with it, think we like it and then move on to things that work a much better. My hair prefers the more natural products from the online, boutique type companies.

Hmmm well Deva products are extremely protein heavy and dry out many curlies' hair. If you're even a little protein sensitive they might be drying you out and creating an overabundance of protein on the hair strand, causing it to get wiry and stiff and therefore lose its curl. Don't give up on the CG method just because its founder happens to be protein (and fragrance-- dear me!) happy. Try a different line of hair care products that is CG. Or not even a line. Just try different products that are reputed to work well for your particular hair type/properties. There are so many CG approved products here in the states and you could always order a few online if you can't find them in the stories in Canada. But definitely check out the site Kathymack recommended first. It will explain a lot.

Maybe my hair likes protein? I have been using deva products for quite a while and then a few weeks ago, I was ready to give up on them. I was only using the styling gel - deva curl angel. I was not getting much curl and not much hold. I went for a cut (deva stylist) and suggested I use about a quarter size and not my usual dime size amount. Well, it worked. LOTS of curl and today in the wind, I still have curl!!
I am also using the deva curl low poo and one condition and applying as they suggest. I don't think I was using enough gel.

Curl keeper is a popular CG styler/serum that is based out of T.O., I believe. It might not be available in stores but at least the shipping shouldn't be too outrageous.

iHerb.com is a great option if you would like to try Kinky Curly, Aubrey Organics & Giovanni products, just to name a few.

I'm from Canada but I haven't lived there since I started CG so I'm not sure what gels Shoppers, etc., would carry. Most likely Herbal Essences, Aussie & Garnier though. I think I used Biolage Gelee pre-cg which is also CG and available at salons. Sorry to ramble.

Deva products contain polyquats, which weigh my hair down after a few days of use. Polyquats build up on hair for some people similar to silicones. This could be loosening your curl pattern and making your hair feel "gunky," as you said. You could try using a low poo with an ingredient that can remove polyquats (cocamidopropyl betaine, sulfates). Just make sure the low poo does not also contain polyquats, which the Deva No Poo and Low Poo do. I personally had to use a sulfate shampoo to really get it out of my hair, but I am sure there are some good low poos out there that could do it.

If low pooing perks your hair back up, you could always continue using the Deva products, but use a low poo as needed to "refresh" everything.

My hair doesn't like polyquats either, so I don't use products that contain them. Some of the ones that caused problems are 4, 7 and 10 (pretty common ones.) I noticed that I had frizz when wet--and they turned out to be the culprit. I couldn't remove them with coco b. It took 3 or 4 low poo washes--I had to keep using stronger surfactants.

I used to do a sulfate wash one a year. Just figured that it would be a good thing. Got away from doing that. My hair didn't look as good as usual, felt coated. I still haven't figured out what it was (I'm guessing it was either gelatine PT that just didn't "wash out," or SM products that were just to heavy and didn't absorb.) I use the generic Nexus Aloe Rid--and my hair is back to normal.
