giovanni Direct leave-in//what am i doing wrong?

Soooooo, I have heard that this giovanni direct leave-in was suppose to be really great for moisturizing and helping to define your curls. I decided to go out and buy it. I had a hard time finding it, but I finally tracked some down at a Target. Unfortunately, when I got there, they were all out of stock. For 2 weeks, I visited the same two Targets waiting for some to come in. When I finally came into one of them, I bought all 3 bottles they had on the shelf, thinking, this must be magic in a bottle if they can't even keep it on the shelves (even though the smell of it is not the greatest). Needless to say, I got home, washed my hair, and applied the product only to have a nice white film cover my hair. WHAT THE HAM N' EGGS DID I DO WRONG?! Am I applying this stuff incorrectly, or does my hair just simply, not like it? Is it better if combined with some other product? Does the texture of my hair make any difference? Any opinions on this product or how I can get the moisture w/o the white film is appreciated. thx.

It does that to me every once in a while too. For me it seems like I can't use it without actually styling my hair, if it's the last thing I use an let my hair air dry it does that film thing to me, or maybe that's just the only time I notice it. Under a gel or other styler I like it, especially if I diffuse, but even then I can't use it every day.

I've read this before about that product, it isn't just you. I have a tester size, haven't exactly had a film but I could sense that it was going in that direction on one time I used it. I'm not sure what I make of it, but I definitely find I can use less of it in one go than my usual Keracare leave in because of it building up. But, it was quite good one day as a refresher scrunched into second day hair after dampening, I use only a small amount for that.

Sorry it wasn't quite what you hoped. Maybe you can make it work somehow yet though.
Serius likes this.
UK based wavy

Mostly waves, but curls and straight bits too!
Fine to medium, high porosity, medium density, very low elasticity
Highlights damage (growing it out), seems to like protein and need lots of moisture.

Cleanse - CJDF, trying out low poos ; Co wash- Uk chemist brands, Urtekram Rose or Aloe, Hairveda Amala Cream Rinse; RO - varies, Tigi Moisture Maniac, Desert Essence Coconut ; Leave in - Keracare natural textures; Sealant - argan oil
Trying out new things, still looking.
The best way to choose ingredients/products is by hair properties. Here's a link to help you with yours. http://www.livecurlylivefree.com/cur...r%20basics.htm Once you determine your properties, you can look for others with hair like yours and see what they use (in signature.) It's the best place to start. It also helps people give you advice.

When I was first on nc.com, I tried every product that anyone discussed. Then, I got to know my hair and could be more selective about what I bought and tried. My hair prefers the more natural products from the online, boutique type stores. I stay away from chemicals, especially polyquats.

GDLI has a lot of protein. My hair LOVES protein. When I first tried it, I thought I liked it. Became more discriminating as I used more products. Found it to be nothing special.

Personally I haven't had any film residue problems w/ GDLI... maybe try varying the amount you're using? I don't use very much at all, maybe a dime-sized dolop. I also like adding an oil over it, like argan or olive.

I have read others have this problem and they mention massaging it in more.

However I must say that the ingredients of it changed recently, and it's really nothing like the first formulation. I was also ecstatic to find it knowing all the rave reviews but I really find it doesn't do very much to my hair. Maybe cuts down frizz a little but I don't find it particularly moisturizing. It may be the citric acid which is way up on the list now. I think in large quantities it's supposed to be drying. That's probably why I like using oil over it.

Try it in different quantities and different ways of applying (raking, scrunching, raking then scrunching, applying to damp hair, soaking wet hair or somewhere in between, etc.) before you give up on it completely. But it may not be the thing for you. Hope this helped.
How much did you use?

I use about a dime sized amount, and have never had that problem.
Peace,
Morgan

I bought a bottle of it awhile ago and didn't like it either as a regular conditioner or a LI. Too much moisture for me and it is kinda foamy. But the other day, I decided to try a co-wash again (which I also gave up because co-washing and conditioning was again too much moisture), so I pulled out the Giovanni DLI. I co-washed with it and used no conditioner afterwards. It's VERY nice for co-washing because it does foam up a bit. If you can't use it as a LI, try it for co-washing.
2C/3A, fine, higher porosity.
Serius, maintaining a hair journal and what Kathy Mack said is huge. I still journal. Document every product you use, when u use it (wet/dry hair/ what products used with/ top 5 ingredients/hair's reaction) and u will learn volumes! there is an article on this site (as well as many forum posts) and other sites (google) that will explain hair properties, such as porosity and density and explain how you determine them and what their characteristics are and how that relates to ingredients. Other ppl pay companies to determine the properties and some companies provide a list of product suggestions. My laptop is broken and I had a lot of info bookmarked, but I will try and find a couple of links and post. HTH
