I looked up the ingredients at aveyou

NoPoo Ingredients on CurlMart:
Water (Aqua, Eau), Cetyl Alcohol, Glycerin, Isopropyl Palmitate, Behentrimonium Chloride, Polyquaternium-7, Laureth-4, Vitis Vinifera (Grape) Seed Oil, Propylene Glycol, Mentha Piperita (Peppermint) Oil, Triticum Aestivum (Wheat) Peptide, Avena Sativa (Oat) Peptide, Glycine Soja (Soybean) Peptide, Melissa Officinalis Extract, Humulus Lupulus (Hops) Extract, Cymbopogon Schoenanthus Extract, Chamomilla Recutita (Matricaria) Extract, Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Extract, Achillea Millefolium Extract, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Menthol, Citric Acid, Diazolidinyl Urea, Iodopropynyl Butylcarbamate, Fragrance (Parfum)

NoPoo Ingredients on Aveyou:

Aqueous Extracts of: Achilea Millefolium, Chamomilla Recutita (Matricaria), Cymbopogon Schoenanthus, Humulus Lupulus (Hops), Melissa Offcinalis (Balm Mint), Rosmarinus Offcinalis (Rosemary), Isopropyl Palmitate, Cetyl Alcohol, Behentrimonium Chloride, Laureth-4, Grape Seed Oil, Peppermint Oil, Propylene Glycol, Wheat Amino Acids, Soy Amino Acids, Oat Amino Acids, Diazolidinyl Urea, Methyl Paraben, Propyl Paraben, Menthol, Fragrance.

At least I'm not crazy, the ingredients on CurlMart have the polyquat!

That is great question. I do feel like shampoo and conditioner make a huge difference on my hair in general. My hair is EXTREMELY thick. Light products seem to make it really fluffy and heavy products can really weigh it done and make it flat on top especially. So, I have to work to find something in the middle that gives it some control and weight without making it flat. Then the weather really makes a huge difference. I find things I like and think they will work all year and they never do. It is very dry here in the winter. My curls really need extra moisture or my hair gets much straighter. It is EXTREMELY humid in the summer. My curls usually look great but again heavy products can make it flat on top and lead to taking forever to dry.

Maybe you are correct about styling products. I have never used very many. Most are sticky and gross to me. And my hair looks pretty decent without them. Though my experience with great hair this winter using the smoothie is making me reevaluate them. I would love suggestions. Do I need to use all the same products in a line? I always feel like I do. That's one reason I decided to find an alternative to Giovanni for summer their leave in is very sticky and so was the gel they had when I was at the store. Any good products that aren't sticky?

kathymack--of course ur not. didn't mean to suggest you were. it's just i think you said paraben earlier (admittedly in a conversation about polyquats so it probably was a typo) and i know the deva bottles say silicone, sulfate, paraben free on the label. and anytime i see the word paraben i get wary bc i've been avoiding parabens in skin care products years before i carried the tradition over to hair ones.

pianogirl--i have two favorite hair care lines, shea moisture and kinky curly, but i've always been okay with experimenting with products from different lines too and so far i have never encountered two products that clashed. but that might just be because i am porous. maybe on someone with low porosity products can clash if they are just sitting on top of the hair strand. as for products being sticky, i feel you, but sometimes products that are sticky and goopy in your hand (my two favs are homemade FSG and KCCC) are not even remotely sticky in your hair, so you can't you really judge the book by its cover. you might want to read this thread for product suggestion that work in summer humidity:

Calling all curlies in super humid locations...lets share high dew tips!

or check the frizz forecast on this site for advice. besides the curl enhancing smoothie, my other go to leave ins are the curl and style milk which is already a lot like the smoothie but lighter or kinky curly knot today which isn't really sticky. it is light with slip for days.

I'm the one who thought I was crazy. I saw polyquats in the ingredients and mentioned it. Then I looked them up (on what turned out to be a different website) and the ingredients didn't have polyquats, but did have parabens. Obviously, aveyou is using old ingredients, It made me think something was wrong, so I mentioned it, LOL!

Dusalocks, thanks for your advice. It is helpful. I believe Target carries kinky curly knot today if I'm not mistaken. I was curious about it so may check it out. I don't live in a real big city so some brands or products can be hard to find. I like to try sticking with things I can get easily without having to order. I will also check that link. I will also keep in mind about not judging a book by its cover. Generally. I put a small amount in my hand and if I feel it needs washing I pass it up. Maybe I should be more adventurous.

Myrna, have you used the Kinky Curly? Do you like it? I am already wondering if the Yes To Carrots order was a mistake. I saw your other post about it having a sulfate. How did I miss that?? I thought it was a safe product. All these chemicals get so confusing and the constant reformulations don't help. Maybe I will go to target today.

Pianogirl, Rizos posted the following in my thread about the "cocos" in Yes to Cucumbers:

"The new formula on the Yesto Cucumbers is perfectly CG. The cleansers are disodium cocoamphodiacetate and cocamidopropyl betaine (both are mild agents) and no sulfates."

I have a credit at walgreens, and I am going to get another bottle, as I have the old formula. This is Cucumbers, now, not Carrots. I have not used Carrots.

Are you asking about the KC shampoo or the curling custard? they are both "KCCC". I have not tried the shampoo.

I got a sample once of the KCCC from Whole Foods, and I do not recall liking it, but that was before I started my new routine. I wash every day, and not with conditioner. I just discovered my hair's properties, and what it needs, so now I am feeling much more confident.

Why do you think the Carrots may have been a mistake? Its another line that is very popular here. I just thought way back when that Cucumbers was a better fit for my hair, as it is not dry. I have their Yes to Tomatoes conditioner, and have used that and liked it a lot as well, may use it in warmer more humid months.

Myrna, I would be curious about any Kinky Curly products you might have tried. Stuff that works for you seems similar to what works for me. I went to Target today but they were out of the Kinky Curly Knot Today. So, I didn't get anything. I am wondering if the carrots was a mistake because in the thread below people are saying it has a sulfate. I have been trying to avoid all the "bad" stuff....sulfates, parabens etc. I didn't know about cones until recently but trying to avoid them too. It's just hard to keep up. I thought maybe I would get the Kinky Curly products today and maybe return the Yes To Carrots. This weekend I have been using the Shea Moisture and gone really light with the moisture milk and smoothie. It seems to be working pretty well but hard to tell for sure. It has been super windy and not too humid though it is starting to warm up.

Sorry, my confusion is about sodium coco sulfate in Yes to...products.

Pianogirl, my hair is coarse, high porosity, and medium density. I dont use what you are using except for the SM shampoos. I have stayed away from oils and butter, because - just because. I guess because of the kind of curl I have. I think Carrots is safe. If cucumbers is safe, then carrots is safe. Do you use the same shampoo each time?

Ahh, something made me think you were low porosity. I usually use the same shampoo all the the time. I do use something different about once a month.

More Adventurous. Tee hee. (Sorry, Rilo Kiley fan.)

Well my ideal would be conditioner only styling but I only seem to get my 3a and 3b curls with a jelly like flax seed gel or KCCC. I don't need much hold but I need just enough to keep me from frizzing out. Or yes I can use a hard hold gel but even then I don't like things that make my hair feel stiff or producty so I stick to gellies. They tend to be more natural too. I commend you for having decent hair with just conditioner/leave in. For me that would be living the dream.

Pianogirl: Dusa suggested to me that I try Aloe vera gel as a sealer, after my conditioner. It has made a huge difference for me. I wonder if you can use that as your "one product".

You know I think some people do use just AVG in place of gel to seal and style. I haven't tried it yet but that would be awesome if I could get away with it. I think I may I try it sometime this week since I have some experiments lined up. So happy it's working for you Myrna!

I am still using CK over the AVG - and just, in fact, purchased a litre of it. But, it is good stuff. I would lke to find a gel without polyquats or protein and I think Ill post about that! Because I use a dime size amount of gel over the CK, for a bit more hold.

So, jellies tend to be more natural and less sticky? That is good to know. I didn't realize this. My hair ranges from being wavy to fairly curly. I really don't care how curly it is or isn't. My main goal is basically to give it some life so it is not flat from it's own weight or product and then for it to not be frizzy. Thankfully because my hair is not extremely curly I don't get horrible frizz like I'm sure some people deal with but it always looks better if it has a bit of a sleeker look than the "I used the hair dryer too long" look. What exactly is a sealer? I have seen people talk about it. What does it do? When do you do it? How much do you use?
