Lighter Alternative To Shea Moisture Coconut Hibiscus

Like Tree15Likes

This winter I discovered Shea Moisture Coconut Hibiscus products. When I first got it home and put a little bit in my hand I was sure I had wasted my money. It felt so oily. It turned out to be the best thing since sliced bread! Even though it is oily it is somehow light and doesn't weigh my hair done. My hair is extremely thick and can get really flat on top with heavy products. This stuff was the perfect medium. It kept the frizz down and helped define nice curls even in the winter without making my hair go flat. I use smaller than a dime amount of the shampoo just on the top of my scalp to give it more body. I used the leave in conditioner as a rinse out. I put the smoothie on before getting out of the shower and the shine spray is awesome for touch ups or to finish off after my hair is completely dry. I had high hopes that maybe I could even use it in the summer even though I usually have to switch to something lighter in the summer since our weather is extremely humid. The humidity does great things for my curls but with heavy products it can also make it go flat.

No such luck! As soon as we got our first bout of warm weather my hair went kind of flat and limp. But the worst part was that it just wouldn't dry with all that extra moisture from the Shea products. It was still wet at 2PM. So, I think I have to find something else for summer. Last summer I was using Giovanni Smooth As Silk. I thought I loved it but now that I know what the Shea products can do I feel like my hair is so much frizzier with the Giovanni than the Shea. I really need to use the Direct Leave In Conditioner with it but I can't stand it because it makes my hair stick together like glue. (Though it does make it look great.) So, yesterday I ordered Yes To Carrots shampoo, conditioner, leave in and frizz serum. I used the shampoo and conditioner a few years ago and really liked it but for some reason moved on to other things. I am HOPING it will work for me but I am not sure. Can anyone recommend any products that are very similar to the Shea products but a bit lighter. I CAN NOT stand anything with a strong, perfumey, chemical small. I know a lot of people think the Shea smells strong but to me it is a light natural smell which I can handle. Thanks for your help!

OK, we both have low porosity, coarse hair. Mine is probably medium density. I use the Shea shampoos - daily. I have used Giovanni smooth as silk, but I can only use it one day at a time, not daily, because of the protein, I think. So, I have switched to Tresemme Naturals. However, and having said that, today I used Yes to Cucumbers shampoo - and I do use it occasionally - and my hair came out great. I also added a bit of gel to my routine, so I cannot determine if it was the gel or the shampoo. I too find myself wishing for a shampoo alternative - because I wash every day - and am pretty sure Yes to would not do well every day. But, I dont know that for sure. I did not use a leave in today either, and maybe your hair, like mine, does not absorb well.

Fine hair, normal porosity. Still experimenting to determine moisture and protein preferences.

So far.....
Occasional Wash: SM Shea Butter Curl & Shine
Co-wash:Suave Naturals Coconut, VO5 Kiwi Lime

Thanks for the replies and bumps. I have noticed Myrna that our hair sounds similar. I think my hair may not absorb well. I am one of those people whose hair usually gets better looking as the day goes on. By the time I get home from work it is looking great! I never really thought my hair was frizzy but the Shea made me realize how much more smooth and defined my curls could be. I never thought something that oily would work and I LOVE that it doesn't feel oily. I have never really been a gel user or much of a styling product user but I'm starting to realize I think I need something to give my curls some definition and to tame my hair a bit. But, I can't stand greasy, sticky stuff. Basically, after I put it in my hair if I feel like I have to wash my hands I don't want it on my hair. Or, if (sin of all sins) it keeps me from being able to get a comb through my hair I don't want it in there. Have you tried the Yes To Carrots leave in or anti frizz serum?

I'm fine/low porosity. While I use a lot of really rich products, I found the SM Coconut Hibiscus products really heavy, if you understand the difference. They just sat on my hair. I had to "wash" them out with a natural soap bar, if not a lowpoo.

My hair LOVES protein, which your coarse hair might not like at all. Usually coarse haired curlies can use more protein in summer. Or, at least some proteins. You may want to investigate some of the products I use and see if they might work for you--especially some of the ones without protein.

Kathy, which ones dont have protein?
Thanks for the reply. I will look at your products when I am on my computer later. I have read all this stuff about low porosity hair not liking protein but I have never noticed a problem with it. Some of my favorites seem to have protein.

I thought I'd originally read on the Curly Kinks website that the products are protein free--so wouldn't say. I feel that the Marie Dean products are well formulated--rich, but not heavy. She's always changing things, but you used to be able to buy protein free versions of the products.

Off the top of my head, many of the jellies are protein free--both of the Botanical Spirits jellies, UFD Curly Magic, AIA Curling Gelly. Both the CK Curlycue ReNew and Sating Roots are protein free. For the other products, I'd look them up to make sure.

The SM Milk has sea algae, the Smoothie has silk protein, so I imagine the OP can use some protein.

The other suggestion I'd make is that you are using products with polyquats (Deva.) I find that the polyquats coat my hair and make it frizz when wet. It takes a really strong surfactant for me to remove them. It also makes product REALLY sit on my hair. You may want to clarify, stay away from polyquats and see what happens.

Thanks, Kathy. My hair can take some protein but not a lot. Back in the day, I used to use VO5 hot oil treatments, and I remembered how nice it made my hair feel. I have no idea if that is still on the market, or what is in it. I will have to investigate.

What has made a difference for me is applying AVG as a sealer, after my RO, and at least now at this time of year, no LI.
I am trying to read up on polyquats now. I don't know which products have them or if they have any effect on me. I would love anymore suggestions for products. I am anxious to get the Yes To Carrots line. Our weather has cooled off a little and I have been making do with the Shea products minus the smoothie.

I did not like no poo, Deva. It overconditioned my hair, especially with the CurlOne conditioner. I was just at Walgreens with a store credit, had my hands on Yes to Carrots, and Yes to Blueberries, but I think both have coco-betaine....
I liked the Deva products but didn't even use a whole bottle. I thought they smelled weird and medicine like. I still have some in the shower and planned to use it this winter but then I found the Shea and never used anymore.

I thought coco betaine was OK? I have a hard time keeping up with all of these chemicals!! I was using the Yes to Carrots when I didn't know as much about what I was doing. I think I quit the carrot line because it seemed to get an old smell very quickly like it was spoiled. I then tried the tomato line sometime after that and loved what it did to my hair (didn't weigh it down) but then it seemed like the fragrance changed and it got very perfumey. So, I am hoping I can make the carrots work for summer because I was never unhappy with what it did for my hair though I can't exactly remember what that was.

I guess Ill do a search on coco betaine. I was using Yes to Tomatoes, and yes they did at one point change the formula, the bottle and the fragrance. Now I think it is only available on line. In any case, it is not in Walgreens, and the Yes to website seems to show it is only on line now, I dont know why. I also loved it, but I only had used the conditioner. I have yes to cucumbers shampoo.

I think a lot of curlies graduated from Deva to the SM line. The SM line is better, smells better and is way cheaper. There is nothing special about Deva, IMO. Just the price and the hype.

I use the coconut and hibiscus line year round but in the summer I use less and dry my hair about 70% then the humidity doesn't increase the drying time just prevents crunchy hair

For now I think I am going to have to stick with the Shea and just try less. The Yes To Carrots shipped today. I was actually using it long ago when it first showed up at Walgreens. I noticed the other day they only have the carrot one now and not the others. I ordered online because they had a package with the leave in and also had the anti-frizz serum. I want to try those. I'm praying they are sticky and perfumey and gross. I am not thrilled at the thought of getting stuck on a product I can only get online.

Myrna, do you use the Giovanni Smooth As Silk shampoo? It has Cocamidopropyl Betaine. I guess I will go look it up also!

question for you pianogirl, does shampoo and conditioner make that big a difference in how flat/frizzy your hair is in reaction to summer weather? (i live where there is no humidity so i am curious.) basically why do you feel the need to change your entire line of hair care products? don't you feel finishing product (aka smoothie or whatever leave in of choice) is the most important thing? i can cowash with a variety of products but they don't seem to make much of a difference in how my hair reacts to weather out of the shower. what seems to matter with my hair is how i style it and how much leave in i use.

oh also pretty sure the deva nopoo and one condition are paraben free because i scoped out both at ulta a few months ago (bought the OC for my mom) and i dont use parabens. however they are obviously overpriced and feature an obnoxious amount of fragrance. first time i could ever smell a bottle without having to pop it open
