HELP! Well water to city water - MY CURLS ARE AWFUL NOW

I just moved from my parent's house where I had well water for 25 years of my life (minus college years), to an apartment where I have city water.

Now my curls look AWFUL. It has to be the water. I've been putting my hair up every day. I have more frizz, my hair isn't as shiny, my curls aren't defined, and my hair is poofy...At the same time, my hair feels heavy like I have build-up and it's flat on top. My curls aren't even curls anymore...they looked I brushed them (wavy and poofy).

I don't know what I should do!! One day I did a baking soda scrub, and my hair looked good for that day (still not like it was before I moved). Last night I did my normal protein treatment, which usually makes my curls really tight. Well, they were the loosest they've ever been. I'm so distraught over this. Does anyone know of a solution? Do I need to change my products, or use products with certain ingredients now?

You may need to try a chelating shampoo if you're dealing with hard water. Maybe test your water to make sure it's the culprit.

This is an excellent video on how to test it if you don't have pH strips around. The Science of Black Hair: Hair and Hard Water (Moisture Basics 2/4) - YouTube
Get a shower head filter, Amazon has several options, Lowes or Home Depot might have an option or two on the ground. Most remove chlorine and the heavy metals that can cause build-up / ick-hair.
Get a chelating shampoo as suggested above too.

ACV rinses can help if its hard water, too.

I grew up on well water (that actually came from an underground spring), and moves always threw me off. My state has very hard water, and my parents have a water softener.

About a year ago I was staying at their house and took a shower there. I'd forgotten about the water! I felt like my hair and skin weren't rinsing clean bc the water was so soft and slick! Lol!

I second te recommendation for the shower filter. If you can get one with a softening function (usually they have a salt cartridge, I think), that might be even better. (If the problem is indeed hard water.)

Good luck!

So with these shower head filters...do they somehow lock on to your current shower head or is it a whole new shower head? I don't think my landlord would be willing to change my shower head.
Jas76 - I did try doing an ACV last night and it worked...for now.

If it's possible, I think my hair is suddenly craving moisture more than protein. I usually feed it protein packed conditioners, gels, leave-ins, etc, but yesterday I bought a sample pack of AG hair care from Ulta that included Moisture and Shine: Fast Food Shampoo (sulfate free), Fast Food leave on conditioner, and Liquid varnish. I still used my GF Triple Nutrition CO and GF mousse... My hair looks and feels better...in fact, its shinier and softer than normal! But best of all my curls are 95% back! I hope this keeps up.

The filter attaches to the pipe and the showerhead attaches to the filter. The showerhead should just unscrew, all you need is a wrench and some pipe tape (which might come with the filter). I bought my own showerhead years ago and have installed it in every place I've lived since. The wrench and tape will cost less then $10 (the tape is under $1) and probably won't take more then ten minutes to attach. There are some filters on Amazon that come with a showerhead, if you're okay with the one you've got use it.

Some examples.

Yeah, I was going to say your landlord doesn't even have to know... Lol! But I've lived in apartments where they are ok with that type of thing, and their maintenance guys will even do it for you. Tell then you have sensitive skin. Lol!

For moisture I can recommend GBP conditioning balm for Sally's! You can also add EVOO and honey to your regular condish.

Since you use GFTN I'm assuming you are not CG. You could just need a clarifying wash and a DT!

Thanks missbanjo and juanab.
A question to all-- I will probably go with one of the shower head filters listed here, but is there anything in particular I should look for when purchasing a filter system?
And im guessing i depends on the unit, but how often do the filters need replacing?
