FSG or liquid ambrosia?
Hey guys. Made some new FSG the other day and I'm loving it. I meant to make another batch right after as this one wasn't quite as thick as I'd have liked it to be due to my adding an extra cup of water but then I realized it has quite a lot of hold anyways so I'm going to wait another 3 weeks before I do my next batch. I'm posting the recipe here because not only does this stuff work well, it smells like heaven. Honestly.
Here is what I did. First I boiled some water and made 1 1/2 cups of chamomile tea, and 1 1/2 cups of horsetail tea, respectively. Then after they'd seeped I threw both teas into a pot and added 4 tbsp flaxseeds and 1 tsp of marshmallow root. Boiled on medium high heat for maybe 10 minutes roughly or until I noticed the liquid on my stirring spoon was quite viscous. I drained into a glass container through my wire mesh strainer. I knocked the seeds about so I didn't miss any gelly. Then I added 1 tsp aloe vera gel (Lily of the Valley--very pure, has to be refrigerated), 1 tsp agave nectar (from Trader Joes), 1/2 tsp lemon juice, and 1 tsp Vitamin E Oil (also Trader Joes). Then I added my essential oils. 4 drops jasmine oil, 4 drops lavender, 4 drops rosemary and 6 drops tangerine. At this point I was practically salivating it smelled so good. I have never encountered a hair product that smelled this nice. So I stirred the mixture up a little, waited for it to cool to warm, transferred to two BPA free plastic tupperware containers. Popped one in the freezer and the other in the fridge.
I love this stuff. Next time I make it I'm going to go back to two cups of water and see if I make a super hold FSG. But so far with the marshmallow root and even with the extra cup of water it has more hold than my previous batches. And again, it smells really, really, really good.
I can't wait to make okra gel. Too bad I haven't found okra yet but I'm hitting whole foods this week so I hope to find it there.
I encourage everybody to make/customize their own FSG. It is really easy. You don't have to worry about chemicals or preservatives like with store bought products. And you're in charge of your purse strings. And even if you don't like FSG, maybe you will like okra gel. I am going to give it a go.

I am happy you have a recipe you like. I absolutely LOVE FSG! I just made some yesterday with argan oil, agave, arrowroot, bergamot and rose. I love it, works great! I also have been experimenting with putting the flaxseeds in pantyhose (tied off ) and boiling it until it gets nice and thick. And then I don't have to worry about straining it.

Dusalocks PLS let me know when you attempt the okra gel. I made some last night with frozen okra (couldn't find fresh..grrr). All I added to the mix was agave nectar and epsom salt, as I do not have any herbs yet. It was pretty awful. Had great shine and volume, but no hold and very thin texture. I didn't have any thicker as well, definitely should have. Keep me posted

Nice tip Jules! That is a good idea. And it still bleeds gelly through the pantyhose? That's amazing. Wouldn't have figured that. And what does arrowroot do? I realize I should google it but I have an FSG master-mixtress to ask.
Shelly, sorry to hear that. Yeah I went to three supermarkets this week and couldn't find okra. I was talking to my cousin who is from South Carolina about this and she's all, "Oh Okra? You can find okra just 'bout anywhere in my town." Guess I live in the wrong state. But I'll try to find fresh okra if I can and do a version of kathymack's recipe. If it works I'll come back again with step by step instructions. You've got me dying to try this stuff.

Dusa,
I use arrowroot as a thickener.
I also smush the hose against the side of the pan from time to time to get all the goodness out.

Fun Fact: I also heard that you can use a mesh tea ball and just stir that around in the water with no straining necessary.

I tried that and it did not work very well. Though I may have put too many seeds in it.
