Default How often do you clarify?

I'm so curious about this! I'd take a proper poll but I don't know how and I have too many questions really.

So how often guys? Every week? 2 weeks? 3 weeks? Month? Two months? Six months? Longer?!%^$$@#

Also, do you have a set schedule to prevent buildup or do you just wait for the rope curls (that's a Jas reference, y'all) and matted hair to let you know you are due?

Are you CG? Mod-CG? Do you use heavy products that make you prone to buildup?

Also. . . what do you clarify with? A sulfate? A strong low poo? Please mention your properties.

I'm CG, don't use no 'cones or even many polyquats, coarse and very porous and I clarify roughly every two months with Trader Joes' Tea Tree Tingle which contains olefin sulfonate along with coco betaine. It's a strong low poo and will get rid of any buildup in my hair. I also low poo once a week with Shea Moisture which is the gentlest low poo I could find.

I used to clarify every week. Lately I haven't in about a month or so and I haven't noticed a difference in my hair. However I do shampoo with sulfate free shampoo everyday and I use cone-free conditioner. I guess that makes me a mod-CG? If I feel I have to clarify I will use the shampoo bars I have because I found them to be very stripping on my hair when I tried them. I'm sure u already know but I'm fine, low porosity hair worst combo ever! Lol

I don't know, Skorpio. I sometimes wonder if I lived somewhere where the weather was humid whether or not I'd start to hate my high porosity, coarse hair something fierce. For now I'm just happy I'm an arid climate gal. My properties seem to agree with my environment. For the moment. (GULP!)

Huh well to me I think it would make you CG. Yes, this raises an interesting question I've had in the past. I use a sulfate free cleanser (SM Shampoo) too on a regular basis but I don't consider myself Mod-CG because even deva makes some low-poos. To me CG means sulfate/silicone free but people who occasionally use a sulfate or silicone product are mod maybe? Somebody clear that up!

How high is ur humidity there? Where I am it's usually 50% and above. I guess I consider myself mod-CG cuz I'm willing to try things that help me, cones or sulfates. Lately I try to stay away juuuust in case it helps u know? But I'm not a diehard CG if something with "bad" ingredients works. I just can't find anything I like either way so I might as well play it safe

I've been "mod CG" for like 3 months now and I've clarified... twice? in that timeframe. With a sulfate shampoo.

There's not really any rhyme or reason to why I do it when I do, it's mostly just a... "hey it's been a while, so maybe I should" lol. Maybe if I held out longer, my hair would give me a reason!

My best answer - "whenever I need it".

Once a week or two I'll use a cocobetaine poo. Once every couple of months (give or take) I'll mix 50% mild sulfate poo with that.

Honestly it's hard to say exactly. I don't really do it on a schedule, I just do it when my hair feels like it needs it!

I use VO5 Tea Therapy Clarifying Conditioner every time I shower. I do not know if this counts.
I have only been CG for a couple of weeks, so I have only clarified once, when I first started.

It depends. I have a gentle sulfate shampoo that I use in rotation- sometimes once a week, sometimes once a month, or somewhere in between. I don't use it to clarify, per se. I just like what it does for my hair because it's got lots of protein and mag sulfate so it gives my curls a fantastic boost and feels less drying and stripping than most of the sulfate-free shampoos I've used.

I do alternate weeks of a baking soda rinse and a sulphate free shampoo - but only use either of these once a week at most....

Hmmm. I think only surfactants count but maybe it's a conditioner that contains some? Have to look it up. But still a co-wash is usually not considered a means of clarification. God that sounds pedantic. We are still talking about hair right Dusa? Get it together.

Right now I'm mixing a cheap sulfate shampoo with my co wash once a week. I think my low porosity hair really likes it. I think if I used a lighter co-wash than what I'm using now that might help.

I think as my hair is getting healthier it's even lower porosity than it was and my co-wash sort of has to keep up if that makes sense. I might grab a cheap Suave/VO5 conditioner.

Mod-CG: I don't use silicones or heavy oils, my hair is anti-coat, but I don't think sulfates are the enemy anymore. I don't consider shampoos likes TJ TTT to be low poos, cause I think it's as harsh as a traditional shampoo. Likewise I think a shampoo with sulfates can be formulated gently.

I clarify with suave once per month. I only use CG friendly ingredients now. However I low poo with SheaMoisture Deep Cleanser (glucosides), 1-2 a week. I notice buildup, so I cleanse as needed...

Sorry I missed this! Well, not much. It's not the desert or anything but in Southern California our dew points are pretty stagnant. (Usually 30s?) According to the frizz forecast most days are "mellow curl" or "tricky curl" days. But my hair is usually 3A regardless of the weather now that I've got products that like me and that I like back.

Jessie, the first time I used the TTT shampoo to clarify I also thought it was as harsh as a sulfate shampoo but the second time it didn't strip me at all so I thought it was just my imagination first time around. Or maybe that my hair wasn't really due for clarifying. . . go figure. In any case, I think prepooing as a must for me. I have very dry hair.

I clarify about once a month or every other month as needed ( I almost typed PRN - nurse lingo LOL) or so. I use whatever Suave naturals poo my hubby uses. I only use a nickel size amount though and find it clarifies well even with that small an amount.

I use TJ TTT once a week. Every now and then I'll use another clarifyer from Avalon Organics. No dryness problems but maybe because I always prepoo. For me the weaker/gentler low poos Like SM are not as effective.

Oh, Jules, that reminds me. As an experiment with the whole co-poo thing someone posted weeks ago (can't remember who) I added a quarter size TTT shampoo to my TTT conditioner last week in place of my traditional SM low poo and it worked just as well. Still had to use a more moisturizing conditioner afterwards as per usual.
