Calling all fine hair curlies- Hair Bio time
I wanted to start a hair bio page for the fine haired curlies. I am using a thread similar to one in the 2s section. This will be the template to use, just copy and paste with all your info. I thought this would be the best way to compare techniques and favorite products with each other. Have fun:lol:
Characteristics: ie: flat top, straighter layers, frizzy crown etc.
Ingredients hair likes:
Ingredients hair dislikes:
HG/Go-to Products: up to 5 products that are constantly in your rotation
Average climate/dew points: humid or dry then typical dews
Favorite styling techniques and why:
Techniques that didnít work and why:
Curl Pattern: 2b/c
Characteristics: Easily weighed down and VERY frizzy crown, with straighter under layers
CG/ModCG/not CG: Full CG
Ingredients hair likes: protein, glycerin, aloe
Ingredients hair dislikes: oils, polyquats, cream type stylers and anything "heavy"
HG/Go-to Products: TJ TTT, AO GPB, NPF, CK coil jam, okra gel
Average climate/dew points: Live in southwest Florida:blah5:
Fall/Winter combos: CK satin roots/ okra gel
Spring/Summer combos: CK coil jam/okra gel or CJ PPgel/okra gel(with extra agave)
Favorite styling techniques and why: scrunching upside down, modified SS, pixie diffuse, long plops, root clipping, Smasters- all to help encourage curl/clumps
Techniques that didn’t work and why: scrunching extra water out of hair prior to plop(makes hair stringy) applying products upright(flat top), applying too little water(stringy hair) spritz/condition(just sat on top of my hair), Condition only washing(left hair/scalp oily and flat), DTs (left hair O/C'd)
Curl Pattern: 3a
Characteristics: decent root curl, very agreeable to most ingredients/products, tendency to clump into rope/sausage curls as the day goes on
CG/ModCG/not CG: modified CG. When I'm not in stash kill mode I would say I follow CG about 80% of the time.
Ingredients hair likes: My hair cannot get enough protein. I also do well with glycerin in a very wide range of dew points (from 0 up to low 70s)
Ingredients hair dislikes: I haven't had any ingredients that my hair dislikes, although I have found that my hair does not care for non-water-soluble silicones in cleansers or conditioners (I have no issue with them in styling products)
HG/Go-to Products: only 5? CHS Treatment Shampoo (not CG), Regis Olive Oil Conditioner, Curl Keeper, Re:Coil, Deva Ultra Defining Gel. This is my guaranteed awesome hair combo.
Average climate/dew points: low dews in winter (-5 to about 15), warm an humid summers (dews around 60-70)
Fall/Winter combos: I don't add anything different for fall/winter
Spring/Summer combos: only product that I have that I only use in spring/summer is Ouidad Climate Control Gel (not CG)
Favorite styling techniques and why: I don't really do any complicated techniques- I do plop my hair for about 10 minutes, but that's just to keep it out of my way as I get dressed
Techniques that didnt work and why: I used to be able to squeeze out extra water with a microfiber towel, but since I cut my hair the towel gives me extra frizz. I also do not do second day hair.
Hair Twins: kimmidawn.
Great idea! Thank you!
Curl Pattern: 2B/C-ish
Elasticity: med (I think)
Characteristics: Definitely have flat crown sometimes and struggle with root lift. My under layer is pretty much straight and the front curls better than the back
CG/ModCG/not CG: CG
Ingredients hair likes: protein!
Ingredients hair dislikes: glycerin right now (I think), oils (they sit on my hair)
HG/Go-to Products: KCCC, SM and AI Girls Protein but I don't think I have tried enough things to really know what is a HG.
Average climate/dew points: I live in FL so it is hot and humid and the dew points are high!
Fall/Winter combos: Wash with GTTT or SM Moisture. Still new to all of this but I was using KCCC when the weather was cooler. I topped it with HETT mousse or Loreal Ever Sleek Gel
Spring/Summer combos: I have been using the KCCC and Ever Sleek since it has been warmer and it seems to work well. I want to try some new things but I'm not sure where to start.
Favorite styling techniques and why: I like plopping but think I may do it too long sometimes and therefor the flat top. I either air dry or diffuse but I like the volume I get from diffusing. I've been trying the Meza method of diffusing and it turns out nice.
Techniques that didn’t work and why: SuperSoaker if I flipped my head over. My fine hair got all tangled and didn't lay right.
Hair Twins: I think we may be hair twins Shelly?
That's exactly why I wanted to start this thread. To give us all new ideas on products/techniques. Hopefully more will respond and you can grow your inner product junkie;)
Sounds like we are similar, you can use "heavier" products than me (KCCC is heavy for my hair and takes FOREVER to dry). Also I do a modified super soaker; I first apply my stylers while upside down. I then SS my hair while still being upside down, which causes my hair to form a few really big clumps and frizz less. Then I immediately go to my plop.
Glad you posted BTW:happy2:
At the risk of sounding dumb, how do you know when a product is too heavy? My hair takes a long time to air dry with KCCC or if I don't diffuse with some heat. I know oils are to heavy because they literally never look dry but other than that, I am not sure.
Any suggestions for a glycerin free gel that can hold up to our FL humidity? I see you like okra gel but is that something you make or something you buy?
Curl Pattern: 3A
Elasticity: Not sure
Characteristics: decent root curl, canopy is looser curls. Struggle with volume due to low density. Tends to fall flat at the crown, especially with length. Underlayers are much curlier.
CG/ModCG/not CG: mod/not CG. I have to use T-Gel to due scalp issues. I do tend to avoid silicones.
Ingredients hair likes: Protein
Ingredients hair dislikes: Dimethicone or other heavy silicone high up in the product list. I don't avoid them completely because I use SLES in the T-Gel, but I get plastic silicone hair really easily if I overdo it.
HG/Go-to Products: up to 5 products that are constantly in your rotation: TN conditioner, ION Effective Care RO, SCC spray gel, Giovanni naturals mousse.
Average climate/dew points: moderate. 30's in the winter, 60's in the summer.
Spring/Summer combos: I don't really do much differently from season to season, but my hair prefers higher humidity.
Favorite styling techniques and why: I plop, but I don't know what good it does for me. Generally I put products into fairly wet hair - dripping but not totally soaked.
Techniques that didn’t work and why: I don't do second day hair. Partly because my fine, thin hair is totally crushed beyond salvageable in the morning, and partly because my scalp can't tolerate it.
Hair Twins: ??
LOVE this idea for us fine haired curlies! I wish we could get a forum category for us.
Curl Pattern: 3b
Characteristics: Very flat top with not a ton of root curl, frizzy baby hairs framing my face, s-curl pattern with ends of hair in Shirley Temple curls
CG/ModCG/not CG: Mod CG (I'm ok with light cones and clarify more regularly)
Ingredients hair likes: Light products, mousse and coconut oil!
Ingredients hair dislikes: Heavy butters and cocamidopropyl betaine
HG/Go-to Products: up to 5 products that are constantly in your rotation.... Tresemme naturals conditioner, KKNT, Ouidad climate control gel, mousse (haven't found my HG yet), COCONUT OIL!
Average climate/dew points: 35-53... Lots of rain and mild wind though (yay Seattle lol)
Fall/Winter combos: More DT and PT
Spring/Summer combos: still figuring this out
Favorite styling techniques and why: I section hair and style "upright", then I do a combo of racking, smoothing and scrunching until I get the curls I like. Then I diffuse until about 50% dry
Techniques that didnít work and why: Air drying because it takes 8+ hours! My scalp can't handle that. I also have not had luck with plopping or styling upside down cause I get TONS of frizz from both.
Hair Twins: SereneSunshine
This is my hair biography at the moment - I will update whenever something changes.
Curl Pattern: 2c
Characteristics: I have a 2c pattern with almost straight underlayers that are capable of becoming more wavy and curly when I've had a recent cut. Products that help define my curls lead to some ringlets. My hair is usually pretty voluminous, but it can get weighed down easily. It looks pretty bad on washing days and best on second to sixth day. My hair isn't prone to frizz.
CG/ModCG/not CG: CG. I have eliminated sulfates and silicones in 2010, and switched to products with at least 90% natural ingredients then.
Hair ingredient likes: protein
Hair ingredient dislikes: sulfates, silicones, emollients, oils
Hard/Soft Water: soft
HG/Go-to Products: I'm not sure if these are my HGs yet, but I'm currently using CJ Curl Assurance Gentle Cleansing Shampoo (like!), Curl Junkie Beauticurls Argan & Olive Oil (dislike: I bought it because I thought I had coarse hair and discovered through the overconditioning and weighing down that my hair doesn't like emollients because it's actually fine), Curl Junkie Curl Queen (was scared for the proteins in it but my hair becomes really shiny) and Curl Junkie Coffee-CoCo Curl Creme Lite (love the texture and scent, but still experimenting. Making progress though!).
Average climate/dew points: I don't know :-( This still is a massive puzzle to me, so if anyone can help me, please let me know. The only thing I can tell is that we have a moderate maritime climate, if that helps.
Fall/Winter combos: so far I use the same routine all year.
Favorite styling techniques and why: using a cotton t-shirt instead of a terry-cloth towel. My all-time favourite styling technique is using my spray bottle with water for 2nd-6th day hair. I've been plopping as well and realised just today that it does work (since I've been experimenting with skipping the plopping part but it turns out it definitely helps).
Techniques that didn’t work and why: co-washing because I thought my hair was coarse so I bought the wrong conditioner. Will try again though once AO GPB is here but it seems my hair is happiest when I low-poo and RO rather than co-washing.
Hair Twins: bosanbo, though she has a curly bob whereas I have long hair cut in waves, but other than that, our properties seem to be the same. I also think shellyRN07swavy's hair and mine have a lot in common. Mine is more dense, but it seems to respond similarly to heavy products and oils as Shelly's.
For me... heavy is anything that my hair dose not absorb, it just coats the hair shaft and causes my hair to droop/frizz. My hair will also feel dirty and looks greasy. Being a low porosity curly, my hair always takes few hours to air dry and couple hours with diffusing. Iím more med/low, while true low porosity curlies can take up to several hours for their hair to dry. I like a lot more volume to my hair, which is a trade off for more frizz. I like light and airy curls. For gels, if you want a true hard hold then biosilk rock hard gelee. Another good gel is curl junkie curl queen-more medium hold. A lot of people on the thread likes LA looks gel or Herbal Essence.
Curl Pattern: 2c/3a/3b (mainly 3a)
Density: dense (and long)
Elasticity: normal to low
Characteristics: layered, side bangs. Canopy tends to be weak. Nape mats. Can get flat top. Frizz if I touch it too much or try to refresh with water.
CG/ModCG (cone free, rare sulfates, low-poo and co-wash.)
Ingredients hair likes: LOVES protein, needs lots of moisture, has to be sealed (preferably with MO).
Ingredients hair dislikes:
Not many. AVG on its own is a problem, but in things or combined with things is fine. Hair does not seem to like cones much.
Average climate/dew points:
Humid summers, dry winters. (Not sure about the dews - high in summer, low in winter!)
More co-washing, sealing with MO and Vo5 hairdressing, less glycerin.
Low poo a little more often, seal with MO and/or jojoba oil.
Year round: Low poo, co-wash, clarify as needed, PT/DT, seal, gel.
Favorite styling techniques and why:
Must detangle in shower, with wide then fine tooth comb. Must seal! Must form curls on very wet hair, apply gel, then scrunch with towel to remove excess water. A little gel then a plop for as long as possible, then clip roots and diffuse 50-75%. SOTC when ready.
Techniques that didnt work and why:
Refreshing with water. I just frizz and droop.
Curl Pattern: 2a/b
Characteristics: Uneven curl patterns. Overall weak curl pattern. Canopy and face framing section seem to be curlier. Terrible haircut still trying to grow out is still giving me massive frizz and some uncurling (especially bottom bits). Nickname was "fuzzy bison." Hair needs some weighing down, but not too much. Medium weigh-down. Doesn't clump very well. Takes a long time to dry since CG (5-7hrs). I have issues getting crown volume since CG and not touching while drying.
CG/ModCG/not CG: CG
Ingredients hair likes: oils and protein both in moderation, honey!, fsg, natural products
Ingredients hair dislikes: sulfates... really any surfactants, I used to be mod-CG using low-poos regularly and my hair was way too dry/fluffy/frizzy. It's so much better now that I started co-washing. Also glycerin in high dews is awful.
HG/Go-to Products: I'm just starting (and starting slowly since I live in Asia). So far my hair loves honey (gives me nice clumps!) and I'm having some good results w/ FSG. I like Nature's Gate conditioners.
Average climate/dew points: tropical, hot, humid, high dew points year round
Spring/Summer combos: All one season
Favorite styling techniques and why: plopping bc it reduces drying time. Ice queen. scrunching.
Techniques that didnít work and why: plopping sometimes gives me wonky uneven curls... i think it's a 2-thing. I tried the duckbill thing no bueno. Think my duck bills are too large.
Hair Twins: ?
It's interesting to see that even though a number of us are fine, there are a variety of products used. I think I'm just too picky about my hair regarding products...oh well
Thanks to everyone who has posted, hopefully more will respond.
I agree! I have had good luck all week with KCCC and Loreal Everstyle. The key has been using heat when I diffuse. My curls/waves are bouncier and there is no crunch at all. Second day hair is so so because of all the wind and humidity we have had but all and all I am happy.
My mission this weekend is to get the AO GPB because my hair loves protein.
I love reading everyone's replies!
Yay, I want to play too :-DMarci's Hair Biography
Curl Pattern: 2c/3a whatever it feels like doing
Texture: fine in some areas, medium in others
Characteristics: Long layers to about BSL when curly, some difficulty achieving root lift but only because my hair is so heavy. Spirals around my face and the nape of my neck, all kinds of curl types everywhere. Easy to straighten and can wear wavy or curly depending on technique. Will frizz without product, no matter how healthy it is.
CG/ModCG/not CG: Mod CG... or not?? I use a low 'poo, a coco-bet 'poo and one non-water soluble 'cone.
Ingredients hair likes: protein, glycerin (even though in my climate it's a no-go)
Ingredients hair dislikes: for the most part my hair is agreeable to pretty much any ingredients but seems to droop with heavy oils, creamy condish and most leave-ins. Aloe in stylers makes it rough and takes forever to dry. However if I want quiet waves rather than volume, I can use a heavy condish to my advantage.
HG/Go-to Products: Shea Moisture MR 'poo, HE Hello Hydration (non CG), LA Looks Power Spikes gel, Epsom Salts/mag sulfate for curl enhancement
Average climate/dew points: humid pretty much always, I live in Miami.
Fall/Winter combos:HeHH as leave-in under LALPS
Spring/Summer combos: still looking...
Favorite styling techniques and why: applying product upside down on soaking wet hair gives me better curl formation and better clumps. Smoothing product then scrunching rather than too much raking also helps keep curls intact. Plopping helps me keep wet hair out of my face. A diffusing combo between pixie curling and flipping the curls from side to side gives me amazing volume.
Techniques that didnít work and why: Raking/combing product through gives me stringy hair. Product on damp hair gives me lazy, droopy curls. Pixie curling made my hair look plastered to my head. Twirling individual curls makes them straight. Anything complicated doesn't work because I'm lazy lol.
Hair Twins:I know I have some hair twins... where are you hair twins?!
Okay, I've been reluctant to do this since I'm still trying to figure everything out but since this thread has slipped to the third page I figured I better do it while I can still find it.
Curl Pattern: 2A/B
Elasticity: I have no idea
Characteristics: I'm in Florida so I have always had flat, mostly straight winter hair and poofy, mostly straight summer hair. It's always frustrated me that my hair would wave when wet and clumpy but it would all fall out when dry. I have some straighter bits and one side is less wavy than the other, the less wavy side will wave nicely until its almost dry then the last 6 inches or so goes pretty straight and refuses to bend to my will anymore. I get better wave with pixie diffusing but that causes crown frizz.
CG/ModCG/not CG: CG to the best of my knowledge
Ingredients hair likes: protein,
Ingredients hair dislikes: butters and oils, glycerin makes it go poof
HG/Go-to Products: still working on this, I was loving the PT from Ingredientstodiefor I was using as a leavein but it has glycerin high up, trying SS PT and spray. Mostly I'm still buying and trying
Average climate/dew points: Northeast Florida
Favorite styling techniques and why: best so far: apply leavein and comb through, wet hair briefly, scrunch gel into length then more on top/sides, finger comb through, comb hair into place (part/bangs), supersoak to rewet if necessary, scrunch more gel into front/sides/back (all in shower). Dry hair by scrunching to scalp with MF towel, plop and diffuse through flour sack briefly, take down plop after 30 mins or so, pixie diffuse till mostly dry (side to side, some upside down, clip front if its misbehaving), pray it holds up overnight.
Okay, why: if I put in product or otherwise manipulate my hair upside down any clumps that form get pulled apart when I stand up. If my hair, especially scalp area, is too dry when products are applied my clumps break up and I get poofy hair. If I squeeze my hair with the towel rather then pressing it to my head I get smaller clumps and frizz. If I plop too long my hair won't bend/wave/spiral into the diffuser bowl correctly, the ends will stay in but the mid portion will bend out funny and escape over the rim so I get less wave. If I don't diffuse through the plop some my hair is still really wet even after 30+ mins.
Techniques that didn’t work and why: upside down product application/scrunching/drying etc, clumps form with different layers and break apart when turned right side up. I listed a lot of this above.
Hair Twins: Shelley & Newtocurlz share properties but are wavier than me.
Will update as I learn. ;)
Curl Pattern: 2c/3a depending on the day
Texture: a mix! I'm beginning to think its more fine than I thought, but I have grays that are more coarse (I color sporadically), mostly fine side of normal
Elasticity: not sure
Length: shoulder length bob
Characteristics: spirally under layers and around face (only on one side, lol), root curl, straighter canopy and other side of face, curls droop by the end of day and look more wavy, frizz is a major problem on new growth at crown (and in general), flat top without clipping, crazy whirls if I diffuse too much upside down
CG/ModCG/not CG: modified- use a clarifying shampoo occasionally (CHS Treatment), will experiment with cones if they're water soluble and/or low on ing. List, mainly CG
Ingredients hair likes: Pretty agreeable, experimenting with glycerine free products currently in high dews, creams, lighter watery gels give me better coverage, protein
Ingredients hair dislikes: jellies are hit or miss for me and tend to leave flakes, too oily/heavy products leave me feeling producty, hard hold gels (I don't like any crunch that can't be easily scrunched out without causing frizz!)
HG/Go-to Products: DevaCare low poo, KCKT, Joico Kpak reconstructor, Jane carter nourish and shine for SOTC, Curls rock or Recoil, CK
Average climate/dew points: humid always (SW Florida)
Fall/Winter combos: Leave in + CK + Curl cream
Spring/Summer combos: still experimenting....LI mixed with Jojoba or MO + SS CEJ/ FHG -or- curl cream topped with med. hold gel
Favorite styling techniques and why: plopping, diffusing, root clipping
Techniques that didnít work and why: super soaker (not enough volume), 2nd day hair doesn't exist for me, spritzing = frizz, smoothing = flat top
Hair Twins: ???
Curl Pattern: 2c/3a
Porosity: high porosity on chemically treated areas, med-high on new growth
Characteristics: shoulder length, growing out an inverted bob. Very little root curl, 2c on top with much tighter 3a curls underneath. the front bits around my face have much looser curls (either from chemical damage, or because I always tuck my hair behind my ears). around 80% grey and growing out the old dyed/bleached bits
CG/ModCG/not CG: I have been cg for around 2 months, so still experimenting
Ingredients hair likes: protein, coconut oil, lots of moisture, sealing with argan oil, gels rather than mousse or curl creams
Ingredients hair dislikes: curl creams are a bit hit or miss
HG/Go-to Products: matrix biolage conditioning balm, joico k-pak, ytc, Giovanni leave-in, argan oil,
Average climate/dew points: dry, haven't really come to grips with dew points yet
Fall/Winter combos: just coming into winter now, so I will find out
Spring/Summer combos: co-wash: tresemme naturals, RO: conditioning balm, ytc or sukin, LI: Giovanni, seal with argan oil, GEL: gf endurance, kccc, or biosilk rhg. I sometimes diffuse, sometimes air dry, and usually clip the roots with small jaw clips. I tend to do a pt and dt every week, I dt with either the conditioning balm by itself, or I add coconut oil, jojoba oil, vitamin E oil and aloe to sukin conditioner.
Favorite styling techniques and why: icequeen method works well for me as I need to scrunch in the curls,
Techniques that didnt work and why: raking tends to pull out my curls. I only tried the super soaker once, and didn't work all that well, but I think I need to try it again with some different products.
Curl Pattern: 1b/1c unstyled, 2a/2b styled
Texture: Fine with some medium thrown in for good measure
Characteristics: Barely wavy, little to no root curl, wavier with length, protein hungry
CG/ModCG/not CG: Mostly CG, but I play with 'cones every now and again
Ingredients hair likes: Protein, Magnesium Sulfate, coconut oil
Ingredients hair dislikes: Jojoba oil
HG/Go-to Products: up to 5 products that are constantly in your rotation
2.) Monoi Oil (fractured coconut oil)
3.) Epsom Salt
Average climate/dew points: Arid climate, winter dews from negatives to low 20s, summer dews from 20s to 40s
Fall/Winter combos: GVPCB/AG:RC/BRHG
Spring/Summer combos: Lube, LALNC
Favorite styling techniques and why: Scrunch and pump - only way to encourage waves and clumps, pixiecurl diffusing to set waves, SOTC - must be COMPLETELY dry, or I lose my waviness.
Techniques that didnít work and why: Rake and shake - pulls out any waves, plopping - wonky waves, SOTC damp - I have to use a light hand or I risk losing any waves the gel has set up.
