Default Deva Cross-clipping is the only way to clip!

Okay I cannot remember who posted this awesome video and in which thread but I have to say thanks a million. Over the past few weeks I've experimented with every version of deva clipping and I have to say, cross clipping is the best. Do it in wet or dry hair. I used it to refresh my roots just now on second day hair before I go out to dinner. It perks up your too curl and gives you instant volume up top. If you're frustrated with clipping and haven't tried it yet, give it a go. It's the best way for me! And since I release the tension from each clip at the same time and raise them up gently, my hair doesn't tangle.

Default Great video!

I would LOVE to use these but can't find them anywhere! I have been told she is bringing out thicker/larger clips for those of us with long, thick and heavy hair... sometime in May I believe.

The clips they sell at CVS or Walgreens are basically the same thing. They work great.

I bought a big box of double pronged clips off Amazon for less than $5 for 80 of them, and they are way better than the drugstore ones - they are doubled pronged on both sides (so they can slide into your hair like the devaclips) and they hold a lot tighter.

I believe I did.
I was so thrilled to see several methods of clipping and had to share. I've been wanting to try the cross clipping but don't have any clips yet. I want the new deva clips but the whole set won't be out til next month. Right now all I see are a set if 4 (?) in a kit, so I'm going to wait. I believe they are the ones shown in the video. Can't wait to try this clipping method.

Thanks very much for posting this! I need to buy these types of clips and try the cross posting technique.

Oh, the voice of t he opposition. I hated those metal clips. They pulled out my hair, fell over, I just could not manage them. I give a huge vote to the CHS roller jaws; you dont even have to t hink about how to place them, you just let t hem grab your hair wherever it needs volume.

I bought my metal clips and roller jaws around the same time I think. I tried both but didn't quite know what to do with either. I clipped my curls with the metal clips like in the Curly Girl Handbook (or at least what I thought it was to the best of my deduction) but didn't find they had any hold. They'd flop over and snag on the hair, like you said. However I was able to get better volume and placement of the curl a couple of times but results weren't consistent and I'm lazy so I just gave up. (I much preferred bobby pins in dry hair.) And then the roller ones I've tried several ways. They don't work for me at all with wet hair. Too big and cumbersome. So they don't sit up when the hair is wet. Then dry I never got the hang of either. The few times I tried I had to pull the top of my hair back afterwards. Actually Skorpio said something about them that resonated with me. She said that if you're more of a wavy curly and have less elasticity, the roller jaws pull out the curl at the root. Looking back I think that might be what was happening with me and the clamps although I haven't given up on them altogether. I'm sure I'll find some use for them. But I digress. the reason why cross clipping works so well for me is not only does it boost root volume/curl, it's the fact that one clip helps uphold the other very tight. To the point that I can flip my hair upside down when diffusing and not have either of them fall out. I realize I have thick hair and that might be why the clips are staying in but when I used just one clip it'd hardly stay at all. And they'd tangle. With cross clipping if you grab the head of each clip and release tension at the same time, sliding out slowly, you don't get scalped. Well at least I don't.

So Dusa, are you using your metal clips for cross clipping?

I tried it this morning. I have normal, average hair and you're right- crossing them DOES make them stick together and not slide down the shaft while diffusing!

I have thin hair and got so frustrated with those clips. They would just fall over since I don't have much hair to grab onto. especially when it's wet. I will try again by cross clipping.

Chloe, yay, I'm so glad it works for you. Yes, it's the way I clip my hair now. Although I also can do (on the sides) a cross between classic and cross clipping where I arrange a clip parallel to the scalp, pushing up towards the hairline, and then I take another clip and align it perpendicular down the middle to uphold the first, forming a "t". But mostly it's all about the "x". I think that's the most efficient way for me to achieve volume and the best hold. Also because you're clipping such a small bit of hair at a time it doesn't disturb my curl or root pattern. Just enhances it. Less funny business. It takes a few tries to get the hang of but now I'm really getting somewhere.

Rustina and Darby, you could try the clips in dry hair right now even if you wanted. (even easier than when wet.) When I wake up the next day if my roots look a little funny after rearranging my hair the way I want it I can apply the clips again for 5-10 minutes and when I release them I find my roots just stay there. Still uplifted from the scalp. It's a quick volume fix.

Well, I'll be giving this a shot!

The roller jaw clips I have only tried a couple times, and with more experimentation I might've the hang of them, but I didn't have much success. Not giving up yet, tho.

The metal clips were ok, but not until I switched to the double prongs I bought online. The drugstore ones I had were not good. At all.

Lately I've been using small jaw clips - the hair accessory ones that are about the side of a quarter. They have been pretty good.

The cross clipping thing is intriguing, tho! I'll give it a try tomorrow and report back!

The roller jaws: you dont clip all your hair just the top and sides. You kind of push up on them , grabbing hair in the jaws. Dusa and Jas, have you looked at the video of Jonathan Torch using them?

I watched the video once ages ago. Right before I bought them.

My attempt left me with some places that were stretched curless, a few places that were crimped. But I'm sure this was AT LEAST 50% user error.

I can tell clipping just my roots with them, however, is probably not an option. I'd have to put the whole length in there. And I'm not super confident about how to accomplish that without messing up my curl pattern.

So idk. Like I said, though, I'll give it another try!

Love the cross-clipping. LOVE! I diffused this morning using Meza's method, but only to about 75% dry, then cross-clipped the roots and let the vents in the car finish drying my hair on my way to work. Cross-clipping worked great because of the root volume, but also because the roots fell more naturally than with previous clipping methods I've tried. Plus, they were easier to remove - they didn't get tangled at all. Thanks so much for posting the video!

Yup, thanks, CnS! And one tip deserves another. I did indeed get my clips at Sally's. They're the double pronged curl clips like the ones Jas was talking about. I'm going to get some more off of amazon or ebay. I don't think there's any difference between those clips and the deva clips. Except supposedly the devaclips can come in the same color as your hair which I admit would be awesome.

Jas, keep at it. I bet you'll get the hang of it soon. It took me a few tries and you're like a hair pro. Myrna, I'm going to watch that video because the last time I tried the jaw clips I tried it the way Veronica Meza did it in her video. Speaking of which, Rustina I'm going to try putting in the clips when my hair is 3/4 dry then to see if I get even better volume. Thanks for the tip.

I have lots of luck clipping, just not with the jaw clips! Not YET, at least.

The double prongs and the other clips I mentioned (mini hair clamp things) have been good to me!

Another note on the metal clips - I have often used two, one to lift the roots, and one to hold that on in place. This cross clipping thing looks like it may help with the volume even more, tho!!
