Something seriously wrong with my hair!

I'm kind of taking a shot in the dark here (and sorry if you already mentioned this and I missed it) but have you been using any silicone (or mineral oil or petrolatum) containing products while washing with bentonite clay? It could be as simple as build-up that's keeping moisture from absorbing into your hair. Maybe you should try clarifying and then give CG a shot. My hair gets that same awful, plasticky feeling from build up, and it won't absorb moisture, so I'm thinking that might be the case here.

And if this is so, I'm using bentonite clay mixed with water as a regular hair wash so hopefully it can gradually clarify any buildup left on my hair! But while we're at it, do you have any good clarifyers you have in mind?
I use TJ's TTT to clarify. But I haven't had to use it more than twice in six months.

Thanks for the very informative post, BlackAngelPlayah. It was very enlightening for a highly porous gal to learn how you low porosity curlies tackle hair hydration. Your hair does look really defined and healthy in that pic.

Newlynatural, maybe this is the key. Maybe it's not the conditioner so much as how long you let it sit, like BAP says. I sometimes throw on a shower cap while showering and I let mine sit too. (I always let it sit a minimum of 5 minutes before I even try to detangle.) And sometimes I get under the shower head while I'm shaving and whatnot to let the hot water pummel against the cap. My hair seems to like most conditioners but my favorites so far are Trader Joe's Tea Tree Tingle (for its slip--not so much its moisture,) Tresemme Naturals which I know didn't work out for you but I really like and Shea Moisture's Curl & Shine Conditioner. I like to mix them all.

My 4b-4c hair could use much more than that!

Yes, I say leave it on as long as possible. And I always add that TTT for slip. Also if you need extra extra slip during a detangling session I've found if you boil marshmallow root you get a syrup that'll cut through any tangle. It's sliptastic!
