New Haircut

So I haven't posted any hair pics in ages, so I figured I was overdue. In January I went from BSL to curly bob (donated hair). Although I had been getting curly cuts at Devachan, I went to a regular stylist who used to cut my hair the last time I wore it short. Needless to say, it was a traditional wet cut. As I got used to styling it myself I could definitely see where the curls didn't lay as nicely as they could. So yesterday I went to a curly stylist and cut off all the regrowth and shaped everything. Looking at my hair today I can definitely see the difference. I'll probably start growing my hair out free this, but I'm loving the new cut.
Top left is pre-chop, top right is post traditional cut. Bottom right is my before pic from yesterday (I can't believe how quickly my hair grew), and bottom left is this morning.

Great cut! Do you have some layers, or is it mainly one length?

Whenever I see your pics and read your posts, I think we might be hair twins....except you're fine, and I'm more on the normal side (with some fair and coarse in there too). How about your porosity?

My hair properties are fine texture (which came as a complete and total shock to me- I was sure my hair was medium-coarse, and I do have some individual strands that are more of a medium or coarse texture), thick density, normal porosity and elasticity. I generally don't have ingredient issues- my hair is extremely agreeable. I've tried to over-protein my hair and couldn't do it- my gelatin PTs are the heavy-duty extreme version (3 packets gelatin in 1/3 cup water with NPF, ION Effective Care and CHS Pure Silk Protein added to give my hair as my proteins as possible, and blow dried into my hair) and I seek out protein products and try to use daily. I also have a tolerance to glycerin and humectants in a very wide range of dew points- I think I've only had issues below 0 and above 75. Thick density gives me more wiggle room with heavier ingredients like butters and oils. Aside from general categories that I avoid (basically spray-anything- refreshers, gels, etc- probably more a technique issue than a product issue), I can count on one hand the number of products my hair has hated in a year and a half of CG, with major product junkie tendencies.

The only thing I'm experimenting with currently is eliminating glycerin to see if it makes a difference with frizz. I live in Florida and dews have been in the high 60's for the last several weeks. Curl Keeper was my HG in the low to mid-dews, but I'm scared to try it right now. I'm a major PJ, so I only use the same thing once a week or so. Last time I used CK I did have some frizz, which led me to experiment with glyc-free stuff.

When I first started, I thought my hair was more coarse than it is. I was scared to death to use protein based on posts here. Now I've realized my hair loves it! I do the IAG gelatin treatment, but only use 1 packet (haven't tried more). I find when I do PT, my hair feels soft when I rinse, so I perhaps could use a stronger one. I always do a DT after, but sometimes I almost feel overconditioned after.

It definitely sounds like your hair is at least on the finer side of medium if it lies protein that much. It was the protein tolerance that made me wonder if I was wrong about my properties. I ended up over conditioned in my first month of CG so I started adding protein a little at a time. I kept waiting for the inevitable straw hair and it never happened. So we might be even closer to hair twins than you thought. Funny enough, I found my first hair twin because we were both commenting about how agreeable our hair was, an how frustrating that was. I know there are probably people who would love to have agreeable hair, but being a PJ with agreeable hair is a recipe for disaster because it's nearly impossible to sort through products. There were times I really wished for a bad hair day, just so I could eliminate a product or ingredient and narrow my purchases. Until I really started treating my hair based on its correct properties, everyday was decent, nothing was ever awful, but nothing was ever amazing, either.

Compared to what my hair looked like B4 reading the book and finding this website, every day is a good hair day now! lol. What did your hair look like "before"?

Well, my journey was a little different and odd. About three years ago I was growing out a curly bob that I got after my hair was horribly damaged by bad highlights. I was in a store looking at hair products and asked for suggestions for styling products and the sales associate showed me Deva AnGel (now light defining gel). I looked at the gel and looked at the other products and filed it away for next time because I wanted to wait until I could buy the whole line. So I bought the line, tried it the next day and loved the results. Decided I needed to use up everything else I had ad stick with Deva. Hated my hair with my non-Deva stuff so I literally threw it all out. At this point, I hadn't read the book and knew nothing about the techniques or sulfates, silicones, etc. I was still towel drying my hair before I diffused and I eventually started using my one non-Deva product that I kept- Biosilk Silk Therapy. Fast forward to about a year and a half ago and I'm still using the same stuff but I'm feeling frustrated with my hair so I stop at the store and look for new products. I couldn't afford MorrocanOil at the time, but I saw a product line that looked similar called One n' Only Argan. So that's what I bought a started using. I didn't notice any huge difference and decided to play around online to see if I could find any reviews that compared the two brands. And that was when I found NC.com. It happened that this was right before I went away for a three-day conference, so I spent all I my time in the hotel room reading everything I could find on the site (as well as livecurlylivefree.com). I decided to try CG when I got back home. So when I "officially started CG" I was already pretty much sulfate-free for a year and a half, and all of my previously damaged hair was already trimmed off. So I saw less frizz and some increase in definition, but I never saw one of those huge transformations because my hair was already pretty healthy. When I get home, I can post the pics from start to finish, I just don't have any of them on my phone.

Ok, thanks!

I have seen a major transformation, because although I was only washing once a week (with Pantene, lol) my hair was bone dry and frizzy (hardly any curl- just frizzy). It was like wavy frizz. Horrid. But I longed to wear it down instead of in a ponytail 24/7 which is how I wore my hair for the past 6 years b/c I didn't know what to do with it! For the past 6 months its been down, and the past 3 months I've finally figured out how to treat it, and am still learning.

I'm still trying to figure out if I'm 2c or 3a...in the morning I have perky 3a curls but by the end of the day, they're more like 2c. I can't stand heavy gels, so maybe I do need more hold but don't like a producty feel in my hair. I prefer it lighter, more voluminous. Even if that means a little frizz, I'm ok with that....but the droopy curls drives me crazy. I think its more of a humid-climate thing though, since I don't experience as much in cooler months.

I started out trying all the gels that people rave about here (LALSG, HESMU, etc) and wasn't thrilled. I eventually figured out, through trial and error, that I do better with thinner consistency gels. I also intentionally aim for clumps that are on the thinner side because large clumps definitely weigh down my curl pattern. The thickest gel that I use and love is the new Deva Ultra Defining Gel, and I think the only reason I like it is because it emulsifies very easily and actually feels like it gets absorbed by my hair. Two inexpensive options you can try are Biotera Gel and GVP Liquid Sculpting Gel (both at Sally's). They have good hold but aren't as clumpy as some of the other stuff. An an added bonus- the Liquid Sculpting Gel is glycerin-free.

The stylist kept also kept commenting about how healthy my hair was and how she hardly ever sees such healthy curly hair.

It looks great in all the pics! You are lucky with the speed your hair grows..not sure I've ever seen anything quite like that amount in a few months before!
UK based wavy

Mostly waves, but curls and straight bits too!
Fine to medium, high porosity, medium density, very low elasticity
Highlights damage (growing it out), seems to like protein and need lots of moisture.

Cleanse - CJDF, trying out low poos ; Co wash- Uk chemist brands, Urtekram Rose or Aloe, Hairveda Amala Cream Rinse; RO - varies, Tigi Moisture Maniac, Desert Essence Coconut ; Leave in - Keracare natural textures; Sealant - argan oil
Trying out new things, still looking.
Chloe- I completely got sidetracked... CG before and after (in multiple pics):
1. Pre-first curly bob. Hair severely damaged from multiple bad color jobs.
2. First curly bob, after pic. Shortly before I started using DevaCurl products
3. Continuing to grow out hair, using DevaCurl products (still towel drying hair, etc)
4. Trying some of the techniques mentioned on NC.com, immediately prior to starting CG (using silicone products at this point)
5. CG- Day 1

As you can see, my "post-CG" hair didn't change much at all.
