Just found my first single strand knot.

Or at least the first I've noticed since learning of their existence. It was on one of my coarsest hairs too. I thought single strand knots were more of a fine haired problem. Am I wrong? Is this a harbinger of things to come from wearing my hair curly? Should I be scared?

No just cut it off and your hair will be fine. My hair is fine and I get those a lot, but I'm changing my regimen to get healthier hair.

I didn't have to cut it off because it was a hair that fell out naturally as I was detangling but I checked the rest of my hair afterwards and didn't spot any. I guess I'll routinely keep an eye out from now on. Thanks. And don't worry! I'm all up on those ends. I've never had a split end before either. (Knock on wood!)

I've heard some people say they ignore ssk's but I cut them off. Mine also eventually become split ends.
I've started noticing these too! I never used to get them before I went CG! More tangles now in general, especially in the nape area. Is that normal?
Maybe it's natural. We've unleashed our curls to do as they please. And what they aim to do is. . . how did this one gal put it? Make love to themselves? That still makes me laugh because that's exactly how my hair behaves. Apparently now it's not enough to latch onto the neighboring strands, my hair's gone self service. Oh well.

And I don't know if it's a secret so much as a texture thing. I just looked into single strand knots after I noticed a ton on my mother (she has medium-fine hair) and I read somewhere they're more common in fine hair. I guess since fine hair is more spindly and flyaway it can knot up pretty quickly. Especially when you're higher density as most fine haired curlies are. And since coarse hair is sort of thick and unyielding it's less inclined to do so? Same for the split ends maybe. Even when I severely mistreated my hair with sulfates, heat tools, and hair dye I didn't get those. I'm guessing it's because the individual strands are so thick they're more resilient. Sometimes I think it would be nice to have some finer strands though. I could try every curly product on the market and not have to worry about the protein content. It's a tradeoff either way.

I get those. My impression is that they come about because my hair sometimes climbs itself as it curls, and can actually tie itself into a knot that way. It seems to help to try to finger comb my hair particularly well when I have my conditioning conditioner on it. When I get them, though, I have to cut them off (with hair shears, so the scissors don't shred the hair), or it just becomes worse, and can draw other hairs into a tangle.
Peace,

I am very prone to SSKs, especially in my right nape. I figure this is where the most friction is going on. I trim them off and don't really bother with them otherwise since its my under layers. Sealing helps some, but they never go away.

FWIW, these happen in the are where my hair is coarsest.

I've been tinkering with flipping my hair to the left with a more extreme side part to keep the hair on the right from getting too tangly.
