Okra gel....it's THAT good!!!!

Like Tree49Likes

Okay, I'm doing something wrong but not sure what. I made some okra gel using the proportions from Shelly and Kathymack, I used marshmallow root in the water with the okra and added agave and AVG, that was fine. However when I added my powdered guar gum to the warm gel it wouldn't mix and formed hard white clumps. Then I thought, duh, it's like gelatin I need to mix it with water first, long story short that didn't work either, I ended up with jelly bits of guar floating in the gel even after using a mixer. I finally strained it out and added gelatin instead and reheated it all a bit to mix it.

The guar wasn't that expensive but I'd like to know at I'm doing wrong. Or is there an actual gel like gum version that I should have gotten? Also, I used frozen okra and my gel is not brown or mudd like at all, its the same color as FSG, is that normal?

Thanks

The brown color shown on the website is deceptive- mine is the color of honey, maybe not quite as dark.

When I added xanthan gum to my FSG yesterday, it gunked up too, but they separated when I blended it with the immersion blender....

Okra gel is similar in color to FSG, not dark. Not sure where the name Mudd came from??? possibly the earthy smell of the gel before you add EO to scent it???

I dissolved my guar gum in cold water before adding it to the gel. I have had different thickening agents "ball" up like that. The immersion blender usually helps a little. After that, I remove the bigger pieces. (and stop using that one, LOL!)

It was okra gel day again today! I topped with LALSG for the first time ever- it was a little hard to SOTC, but I think it looks pretty good. Next time I have a bad hair day like yesterday, I'm going to post it so you'll see how awesome this stuff really is!

I had used the BB Mudd a while back, and I did like it but had too many other products on deck. Next time she has a sale I think I'll pick up a bottle. I admire those of you that make your own, but I'm not that ambitious - yet.

This thread is making me even more impatient to hear back from BB about what she suggests I do for additives. I am trying to resist the urge to either take a chance and just pick things myself or to just give up and go for the foolproof one without first talking with her. Any idea how many days it typically takes to get a response from her?

Fine, low porosity, med/high density
BSL - going for mid back to waist

HG: currently
just washing with a low poo that contains protein (Alba Naturals Coconut) and using Suave Naturals Coconut as both a RO and LI. No stylers right now, but this gives me pretty good curl, definition, low-ish frizz, and it feels and looks good. Also an occasional PT (liking the Palmer's Coconut Oil Formula which has cones) seems to be key for me.

I don't really have any good pictures, but I'm pretty happy about the results. My hair always looks kind of fluffy and limp on washing day (which happened to be today), but I used FSG (applied it while still in the shower so my hair was soaking wet, then plopped for half an hour or so) and it actually looks nice! It's a decent hair day. My hair is soft, has curls and waves. It's not perfect but it's a good start and I'm curious to see what happens tomorrow when I wet and style it again. Oh, and I know the lengths are a bit weird but I usually have layers and I am in need of a good cut, but it's expensive and I was trying to find a curl specialist (which is very difficult, apparently) so I kept postponing. Going to get one soon because my hair is so heavy right now and it'll improve my curls.

CurlyMJ, I love your curls! Wow. Wish mine would look like that as well

Hmm, now that I see this picture with all the separate hairs sticking out I start doubting my hair width again.

Well I jumped on this band wagon and what a great ride!

Here is what I do:

2 cups of distilled water
1 package of frozen okra ( whole or sliced; I have used both)
Boil until gummy, then I strain and add:
1 tbsp of agave nector
1/8 tsp of tropical scent
1 tsp of vegetable glycerin
1 tsp of almond or rosemary oil.

I don't add anything else because I couldn't find the thickener and don't want to order online. The gel consistency is like mucous. Hey it works. It makes enough to last me about 2 weeks and I keep it in the refrigerator.

3b, Medium-Coarse (slight coarse charactericstics), Normal porosity & Low elasticity per Curl Wizard Profile.
Low-poo: Nourish Shampoo
Co-wash: Suave, Vo5, HE, Aussie Moist
Deep Conditioner: GVP Conditioning Balm
Leave-in: Nourish Conditioner (Trader Joe's)
Stylers: LA Looks Sports, Coconut Oil, Almond Oil, Jojoba Oil.
Methods: Wet plop or pineapple at night, diffuse in the morning. Scrunch w/joboba, coconut or almond oil.
I finally did it- again- but I burnt the pot!!! DH is NOT Happy!! Oh Well, my hair looks GREAT!!!

used the following recipe:
2 cups of distilled water
1 package of frozen okra ( sliced from Walmart)
Boil until gummy, then I strain and added: xanthum gum; grapeseed oil, citric acid, potassium sorbide; agave
also added 2 TBSP of conditioner. I actually mixed all the other ingredients together with two TBSP water before adding the Okra.

Evidentially I had it on to high a boil; boiled away all the water and burnt the pan-- I just added a cup more water and brought it back to boil. Then I actually used the old okra and made a second batch -- wasn't sure I could do this but it did gum up and seems to be working really well.

This is after a complete coloring to violet on Saturday so I really wasn't thinking I would get too many curls and I did!! think I found my new HG!!!

I'd like to jump into the bandwagon, please.

I sliced and boiled 4 okras in 1 cup of water. I forgot that it is supposed to be runny, so I boiled it down into almost nothing. LOL. I mixed it with 1/4 tsp xanthan gum to thicken it up. It's quite a lot but works pretty well.

My curls got so shiny and became these fat, clumpy, super defined curls. The gel has so much slip and was easier to distribute than FSG, despite the slippery elm in FSG. It has better hold, too, but most probably due to the xanthan gum. However, the xanthan gum in this doesn't feel as "drying" as I felt it is in FSG.

I hope it's not a fluke, because I'm liking this. I still have enough gel for one more use. I'm thinking to mix FSG and okra and xanthan gum to get the slip, clump, enhancement, shine and hold. Probably add some gum arabic and/or carrageenan (irish moss), too, so I can get commercial gel-like hold.

I'm curious, though. Barely anyone who had tried and liked okra gel listed it as their routine in their signature. Most stick with FSG and/or commercial brands. What makes FSG trump okra gel for you?
