Hair-tastrophy on vacation

Ugh. So we are down here in Florida on a short vacation. After bad 2nd day hair was thrown into a pony, then survived an airplane flight and a day at universal, I had to condition the crap out of it in order to detangle.

Got out of the shower to limp curls. Applied gel, then realized I had forgotten to seal. So I sealed after, then added a little more gel. I forgot my MF towel, so I gently used a hotel town to scrunch out the excess water. (I usually don't have too many problems with regular towels if I use them carefully.)

My hair was awful.

It was limp and little more than wavy, and immediately began to frizz. It feels SUPER soft. But i use SM low poo and some TN as my RO, a little suave coconut as my LI. That is lighter by far than what I usually do at home.

I don't know if its the water here or what, but I want to chop my hair off it's so bad.

I'm hoping the next couple days are better, or at least that my hair returns to normal when we get back!!!

Oh Jas, I feel your pain. This is what we FL curlies get to enjoy 3/4 of the year, so I know what you're going through! Dewpoint of 72, temps of 86, random downpours. And as you've noticed, hard water that doesn't agree with curls :(

Hope tomorrow's a better hair day. And please don't do anything drastic to those beautiful tresses of yours!

Yeah, Florida's so much fun, hard water & high humidity/dews, yay!!! :protest:
Maybe try a final rinse with distilled water? I am also finding a hard hold gel to be a big help, did you bring one with you?
I'm fairly new to the CG thing, I've always just put my hair in a braid, bun or other containing/taming style when it goes poofy. You're on vacation, put it up or tie it back and enjoy yourself!

chloe92us 05-12-2013 08:12 PM

Welcome to my world, lol! I sure hope you're enjoying the sights despite the bad hair! We all understand!! No one is frizz free in Florida! ;)

Jas76 05-12-2013 09:30 PM

It's not even the frizz. That's only a small part of it. It's limp - so much so that it's wavy rather than curly - some places basically straight!

I'm used to hard water - I live in a limestone state! The water is very calcified there.

But it's just... For lack of a better term... "Wigging out". It feels soft yet dry, it looks fried. (Think Magenta from "Rocky Horror", just without all the volume.)

I don't know!!! I hope it goes back to normal quickly! I could handle some frizz if it was at least curly! But it's limp AND frizzy! And it doesn't even start out nice!!! Ugh.

Jas76 05-12-2013 09:34 PM

Oh! And yes, I brought BRHG with me. Tomorrow I will try using more of it. Idk. :(

Jas, I'm no expert at all but these things come to mind:

- You had to alter your normal routine slightly. I know from experience that this can make all the difference.
- Did your hair get enough protein now that you're in Florida?
- Does the humidity affect how well you hold moisture etc? (seeing that you have high porosity)
- How about starting with a clean slate and then do what you always do at home?

What I do on bad hair days is put in a French braid. It's a great solution if you can make one. I got a lot of compliments when I put up a photo on Facebook where I'm wearing one. People love it because it looks fun and nice. It's convenient as well, especially when you have a lot of hair and are in a warm place (like Florida, I imagine).

You are on vacation!

I really don't mean this to sound critical (although I guess it will-sorry), but I am surprised that you have logged onto this forum twice within two hours while you are on a SHORT vacation. We all obsess, but go enjoy your time off. I would happily endure some bad hair to get some time in heat and humidity. I am tired of being cold! I hope you have a great time in Florida.

A lot of us have the Curl Talk app on our phones, so it's pretty convenient to log on when you have spurts of down time: waiting in lines, sitting in the car, laying around in your hotel room.

Jas, I live in Florida. I feel like sealing and hard hold gels are pretty much my best friends. Maybe your hair's just going through an adjustment phase. I hope it gets better.

chupie 05-13-2013 08:32 AM

Smartphones. Gods solution for line waiting:)

chloe92us 05-13-2013 08:33 AM

Jas- I think it's easier to become OC here with the high humidity. Try using less LI while you're here and see if that helps, and make sure to use a lot of protein (which I know you do anyway).

Jas76 05-13-2013 09:41 AM

Ok! So first of all - yes, I logged on while on vacation. It's my vacation, I can spend it how I want to! Lol!
Actually, the only time I was on here was when waiting in line, and then once before i got into bed so I might see some advice for the morning.

This is also a working vacation, so these last two days are really low-key. I'm actually still in my hotel room (alone - husband is giving a clinic) and waiting for a friend to get off work and take me to lunch.

And I've not been obsessing - I threw it back while at the park and wore no make-up. Lol!!

But I have an event to attend tomorrow, and preferred not to look... Like I did.

Maybe it was the water in Orlando, idk, but today (in Sebring) my hair seems to be much happier. I did eliminate the TN today, so maybe that made a difference?

I did a PT before we left, hoping it would help.

Hopefully today (and tomorrow!) will be better! Thanks for the advice!!

chupie 05-13-2013 09:51 AM

Different water can throw off a LOT of things besides hair. I can well imagine it messing up your routine. Bottled water? Maybe use a really watered down sulfate wash to see if you can get it back?

Lynaea 05-13-2013 11:10 AM

Dew was like 67 yesterday and only 47 today so that probably helps too. My hair is certainly less poofy today.

Well Jas now u know all about us FL curlies and how difficult it is for us.I'd say the droopiness is probably O/Cd. I'd definitely stop using any LI while down here. For me the more minimal I keep the products to, the better my hair behaves. I find using gel in this heat makes my hair very tangely, so I've stopped using it. I'd probably still seal though, since that usually works for you. Hope u figure it out;) I'm flying to Boston this weekend for educational conference. ..praying me hair behaves

I know this is off-topic, but Shelly, weren't you experimenting with polyquat-free products? I just noticed that your signature says that your hair doesn't like polyquats. I'm suspecting my hair doesn't like it either, so I'm curious how you came to this conclusion. You can PM is you like so we don't spam Jas' thread.

shellyRN07swavy 05-13-2013 12:56 PM

It actually may go hand in hand since Jas has previously asked about clarifying hair with hard water issues. My hair seemed frizzy all the time, even when I just got out of the shower. As soon as my hair was not dripping wet, it started to frizz. This is usually a sign that you have a buildup issue. So I used a cleanser with EDTA ingredient, which is suppose to remove any type of chemical build up(thus hard water). After this, my hair was still frizzy and coated feeling, even when soaking wet. At the time.. all the products I were using had some type of polyquat in them. So Kathymack mentioned that the polyquts could cause build up issues(especially for fine hair curlies). So I experimented by removing them from my routine for a month..to see if there was a difference with how my hair behaved...With living in FL and having hard water I try to remove anything that may cause issues. Last few days been using products w/o glycerin, and my hair is better. The LI I was using had vegetable glycerin, but my hair was just soo frizzy. I also backed off the GPB conditioner since glycerin is high on the ingredient list. Hope this helps ;)

Sorry - out of line

Jas, I felt guilty when I read your response to my post. You don't have to justify yourself to some stranger on line. I was having a late, sleepless night due to severe back pain. I am also a stranger to the world of phone aps. I am a hold out against the constantly connected world of technology and my dream vacations are where I am out of touch! (Of course I have the phone with me for emergencies- but I love it when it doesn't ring!) So I guess I was projecting my ideal onto your vacation. Anyway - hope it was a good one.

No no!!! No worries! ;) really, no guilt at all, please! I can relate to the back pain and the sleepless night!

This is a mini-vacation. A quick break on the weekend. Husband has his clinic today and tomorrow, and I have work to catch up on. I have a freelance project I have to finish and there's a ton of work I need to do for my regular job. So I guess it doesn't feel like a real vacation anyhow!

I also have a real vacation coming up this summer - going to England!!! I'll be disconnected there except for email, really. Though maybe I'll check in from the hotel room every now and then!

As for my hair... Today was better! Not sure what happened yesterday, but I'm thankful today was better!

Although I am quite late to this discussion... I feel so bad for you Jas! FL weather is terrible this time of year. We try for nice curls but its a hit or miss. Hope you at least had some fun :)
