Default Dry hair

When I (consciously) went CG, I started off with CJ Beauticurls Argan & Olive Oil conditioner. Great smell, great consistency, and it should have given some great results as well because I had coarse hair. At least, I was convinced I had. However, it resulted in limp, overconditioned, weighed down hair. Turned out that my hair wasn't coarse at all, but fine, which explained a lot.

Now I'm low-pooing with CJ Gentle Cleansing Shampoo and I use AO GPB. My hair definitely likes protein, but I find that my ends are a bit dry. It made me doubt yesterday whether I was fine or had made a mistake again. When washing my hair today, I was convinced that yes, it really is fine, so I don't think the protein in GPB are the problem as might have been the case were I coarse-haired.

I'm thinking I need more moisture. In terms of styling, I'm using CJ CQ, which does not really moisturise my hair, and I'm experimenting with BRHG (today is a BRHG-only experiment). BRHG doesn't really provide moisture either. I have CJ CCCL, but the oils weigh my hair down so that's no option.

Now, I still have some CJ Beauticurls Argan & Olive oil conditioner. It's just sitting there, which is a waste, and I was thinking that perhaps I should mix a tiny blob of it in my spray bottle and use that to re-wet my hair and see if it provides some moisture. However, it took me a few months to get rid of the oils that had been sitting on my hair after several co-washes. It's a risky thing I suppose because my hair is not too fond of oils, but I figured asking your opinion wouldn't hurt.

Would you take the gamble with my properties (fine, low-porosity) or would you advise something else? It's mostly the ends that are dry.

Default Dry hair

I use head and shoulders for my hair. the best one is the 2 in 1 with shampoo and conditioner in one.

Unfortunately I don't have any advice but I want to see what others say. I've been using more products with protein and my hair feels extra dry and tangly too.

Unfortunately ansh, Head & Shoulders contains both sulfates and silicones. Sulfates are very drying for my hair and cones cause build-up, which weighs it down. Thanks for replying, though!

New_to_Curlz, that's fine, hope this thread helps you as well!

i know of several people with fine texture who use cj beauticurls leave in alone (no styler) with great results. give it a try. they rotate cj gentle shampoo and cj daily fix, then just the beauticurls leave in. you could also use cj strengthening conditioner, it has protein in it.

I've been using Protein Treatments as leave-ins, they don't weigh my hair down as much as regular LI/RO's do. Had decent results with Spiral Solutions and am really liking the SheScentIt okra repair.

@rbb: Thanks for the tips! I want to try the Strengthening Conditioner, but right now I'm looking for a cheaper solution. What do you think about Aloe Vera Gel? I just read an article about Aloe Vera providing moisture. AVG is not too expensive here. I've already spent a lot of money on products that were just not for me so I'm trying to keep the price down.

@Lyneae: But do the PTs provide enough moisture? I sometimes use the gelatine PT and my hair likes the protein but it doesn't seem moisturised afterwards.

My hair is fine/low porosity. Don't know if my experience will help or not.

If you're not using moisturizing PTs (like CJ Repair Me or SS Protein Repair), you have to do a DT following the PT. If you're doing the gelatin PT, you have to add moisturizing ingredients, or do a DT following the PT. I could add gelatin to my okra gel (1 envelope to 4 cups); however, the gelatin PT (1 envelope to 1/3 cup of water) coated my hair and didn't all come out. I did two gelatin PTs, a week apart. I needed to use a sulfate shampoo to remove that and all the build up it caused (my hair just couldn't absorb products after the gelatin PT.)

The AO GPB might not be an all of the time rinse out for you. You could alternate it with the CJ Argan & OO and see if that makes it so you can use the CJ condioner. If not, you may want to try something else that's moisturizing. I find that using protein with a really rich product balances things out. You may have to add more moisture to your styling products if you continue to use the AO GPB all of the time. AVG alone wouldn't do it for me.

Lastly, you've added the BRHG. My hair just hates all the chemicals. Several of the other products you're using have polyquats. While you are using lowpoo, it may or may not remove all of the chemicals from your hair.

Kathymack, thanks for your elaborate reply. I must say that my signature is not quite up-to-date since I don't use CJ CCCL any more.

I've noticed I can't do the gelatine PT too often and now that I have AO GPB, it seems that doing the gelatine PT would be an overkill of protein. I'll try and see what happens when I alternate between GPB and my CJ conditioner. Perhaps that does the trick.

Yeah, I've noticed the chemicals in BRHG. I'm wondering whether they could be drying as well... My hair generally likes natural products so I was surprised to get great results with BRHG. Do you perhaps have any recommendations for natural styling products? I don't have to fight frizz (luckily) and if it has good hold, my curls figure out the rest (at least, so it seems). I'm definitely eliminating polyquats. Right now, I'm still thinking about getting KCCC, but I'm open to other suggestions. I've looked at Shea Moisture Curling Soufflé but I'm scared it might be too heavy (several oils + shea butter) and it's ridiculously difficult and expensive to get here. Even KCCC is cheaper!

My hair didn't care for the SM products that I tried. While I frequently use minute amounts of really rich products with no problem, these are heavy rather than rich (if you understand the difference.) They just "sat" on my hair.

Ingredients for the Souffle are very tempting to me.

Aqueous Infusion of Agave Teqilana Leaf Extract and Sugar Cane Extract , Pectin , Vegetable Glycerin , Adansonia Digitata Pulp Extract (Baobab) , Cocos Nucifera Oil (Coconut) , Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea Butter) , Panthenol (Pro-Vitamin B-5) , Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Extract , Tocopherol (Vitamin E) , Linum Usitatissimum Seed Extract (Linseed/Flax) , Hibiscus Sabdariffa Extract , Potassium Sorbate , Proprietary Essential Oil Blend

I've kept myself from buying it because I didn't like the other product. As I read these, it's making me want to buy it.

As far as product recommendations--my signature has a lot of my current favorites.

What about using something like coconut oil on the ends of your hair? Some people "pre poo" with coconut oil and you could just seal with it or try putting some on the ends an hour before showering?

I'm not sure if I dare to try that, asianrunner. My hair gets weighed down so easily and seeing that it's low porous, I expect the oil to just sit on top instead of truly moisturising it. Thanks for the suggestion though!

Kathymack, I must admit that I really want to try the Soufflé as well. I do get what you mean - Shea Moisture being heavy instead of rich, but the Soufflé just sounds great. It's too tempting. To me, it sounds as if it will provide that bit of moisture I'm looking for in a styling product.

I finally found a webshop in the Netherlands that sells it, yet it costs €20.00 ($26.00), and that's without shipping. It's even cheaper for me to get it at Amazon ($17.00 + $6.99 shipping. In euros that would be €18.00).

An American friend is going to find out how much it would cost if he gets it at Target (only about $10.00 I believe - What a difference!), then ships it to me.

I'm also looking at the products in your signature, but I need to do some more research before I can decide whether I'll give them a try or not

I bought the Souffle at Walgreens (drugstore.) It was $10.99 plus tax--more then on their website. I'll use it tomorrow and let you know.

My two cents. When I first went CJ, or really my whole life, I'd been convinced my hair was SO dry and my answer to all that was to use the thickest products I could. Argan oil, shea butter, etc. but once I started to notice a pattern of my hair liking a product and then getting dryer, I realized these heavy products were the culprit. They did the same things as silicones. I learned to become patient. Lighter conditioners don't give you the same instant gratification, but over a few weeks the moisture levels in my hair would level out and wasn't on this dry-coated yoyo anymore.

My leave-in conditioner is very lotion-y and I my rinse out strikes the perfect balance. Unlike you though I am protein sensitive. It makes my hair very frizzy and eventually crunchy. There is a little protein in my RO and that's all I need and can handle really.

You'll have more options than me. My scalp is allergic to many things, but I would look at the ingredients in your local products and go from there. Ignore what they say on the label or for what hair type they are for.

I need help with this too!! I have no idea what my hair likes!! All I know is that I have sections underneath that are tangled and dry and extemely coarse! Everyone is talking about proteins and all this stuff. I don't know what I have and it's frustrating blindly stumbling through trail and error! I have thick hair and a lot of it too! The underneath is definitely coarse! Help? Haha(:

I'm not sure how to do multiple quotes so here goes. First off I have definitely improved my hair dramatically because of kathymack!!!! And I now use several of her products in her signature. But I believe that CJCQ has polyquats in it,double check the ingredients. The CJ strengthening conditioner also contains polyquats.

I used to use up to 3 different kinds of gel daily to help with hold, but realized that this was causing my hair to be dry and tangled. Using more natural healthy products, and minimizing the products I use in my routine has been very beneficial.

I found to not really like CJ conditioners, just didn't seem to do anything good for my hair. I am now using sevi pumpkin conditioner for my RO, thanks to kathymack again lol...I also like suave naturals coconut conditioner for cheap rec. I'd definitely lean towards lighter rich products than heavy oily ones.

I used coconut oil when I first started CG, and it was a disaster!!!!! My hair never absorbed it, and it Just coated my hair. It took me couple of months to reverse the damage ugh.

I'm also wondering if there might be an ingredient in GPB that could cause buildup issues. I had to do a heavy cleanser to remove all the buildup.I have very hard water, so I'm not sure if it was just some mineral buildup. I'm slowly adding GPB back into my routine, since my hair dose like it.

I really didn't give you any suggestions, but since our hair behaves the same; figured I could share my experiences. Good luck
