If you consider KCCC a gel, then it doesn't have any of those things.

LA Looks Power Spikes has some strange ingredients, but I don't *think* it has any of these things.

This polyquats build up issue... Can they not be removed with low-poo?

Myrna, I'm soon going to try a super clarifying treatment from Sally's that some claim has worked miracles for them - I'll let you know if it does for me! Perhaps you could benefit of your hair has not been behaving lately??

Oh! And I THINK all of the Jessicurl stuff is polyquat free? The Rockin Ringlets gel is basically FSG.
2c/3a/3b, Fine/med, Dense, high porous, & normal elas.

Lo-poo - Renpure Keratin, SMR, Giovanni SaS
clarifying - mix Johnson's H2T with low poo
Co-wash - Suave Nats. clar. or coco.
RO - GVPCB, Ion Eff. Care, TN.
LI - SMR, Cure Care, or RO
Seal - MO or Jojoba
DT - + honey, ACV, & EVOO to SM masque & GVPCB
PT - Gelatin!, CNPF
Styling - FSG, AIF, BRHG, LALS/PS, GF curl spray gel, SM Souffle/Smoothie, LOOB

How do you know if its a polyquat?
Volumax mega hold doesn't have any ingredients the say polyquat
Fine texture
Low/ Med porosity
Med density

Wash: SM MR, GTTT
RO: SM MR, GTTT
LI: SM CSM or SM MR
Styling:AVG, KCCC, Volumax MEGA (HG), Joico Curl Definer
LA Looks Power Spikes - [see Chloe's comment below]

KCCC - No protein, no polyquats, no glycerin.

Curl Junkie Pattern Pusha - No protein, no polyquats, no glycerin. Many people compare KCCC to CJ PP.

Jessicurl Rockin' Ringlets - No protein, no polyquats, but it contains glycerin.

With regards to Jessicurl, Jas is right: they don't contain any polyquats. However, I would avoid the Awe Inspiraling Spray (glycerin) and the Gelebration Spray (glycerin). You could use Confident Coils Styling Solution, though.

Jas, polyquats are tough to remove with just a low-poo. I'm sensitive to them but they're in my gel (I'm using it until I finished the bottle, which will take max two months, pfew! Unless I get addicted to FSG...), so I have to use a sulfate poo more often than I'd like too. I wash my hair only once a week so that doesn't help, either.

New_to_Curlz, you can recognise polyquats by simply looking for something called "Polyquat(s)" or "Polyquaternium," usually followed by a number. I'm not sure what gel you mean, but when I look for the gel you mention, I get something called Volumax Styling Gel and the second ingredient is "Polyquaternium-4" so it does contain polyquats.

These are the ingredients from drugstore.com for the la looks power spikes- I don't see protein in here....maybe there was a formula change?

Water (Aqua), PVP, Sorbitol, Carbomer, Phenoxyethanol, PEG 40 Hydrogenated Castor Oil, PPG 5 Ceteth 20, Aminomethyl Propanol, Methylparaben, Propylene Glycol, Panthenyl Ethyl Ether, Disodium EDTA, Methylisothiazolinone, Fragrance, Yellow 5, Green 5
2C/ Coarse/ Normal porosity/ SW Florida/ Salt & Pepper

Oh that might very well be the case, Chloe. I found it in a topic because the search function was failing me, and it was posted in 2011. Thanks for the heads up. I never really know what drugstores to look for because I don't live in the US and don't have access to many products. I'm sure about KCCC and CJ PP though because I'm thinking about trying one of those myself, so I studied them.

Thanks, Curlfriends, keep those suggestions coming. I need something to use on top of CK. Today I used a Giovanni gel, and my hair came out great. but, its a low humidity day. Jas, I tried the Rockin Ringlets years ago but that was before my current routine and CG. It may be worth trying again. Yes.
The jessicurl confident coils stuff fits the bill too....I added the ingredients to my previous post, straight from the JC website. It's the Rockin ringlets that has glycerin.

Thank you Lauraimes! That is what I thought I should look for but I didn't know if polyquats had any other names.

The gel I referred to is Volumax Mega Hold Gel from Sally's. It is different than the regular one that is in the product list on this site.
The ingredients are:
Water/Aqua/Eau, Polyacrylate-2 Crosspolymer, Aminomethyl Propanol, Ceteth-20, Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein PG-Propyl Silanetriol, Laureth-12, Butyl Methoxydibenzoylmethane, Ethylhexyl Methoxycinnamate, Tetrasodium EDTA, Iodopropynyl Butylcarbamate, DMDM Hydantoin, Benzyl Benzoate, Limonene, Benzyl Salicylate, Fragrance/Parfum

I chose it because it had no glycerin and had some protein in it. I really like it.

I have been avoiding glycerin in my styling products for the last month and have had awesome hair. Today, I decided to use Curl Keeper to see if I could use it (CK is my mid dew fave!). My experiment was confirmed- dews were in the 70s today and I had major frizz. No more glycerin in high dews for me!

Good point, Chloe. I dont have an answer...CK works good for me most of the time, but you're right about the glycerin, and I see now that it has a polyquat as the last ingredient. I may have to get a sample of the Jessicurls confident coils.

So will coco-betaine not remove polyquats? It has to be a sulfate? What about EDTA?

I posted about LAPS awhile back - I'd always been told it was protein heavy, but my bottle doesn't list even one! LALS is higher - it has two, but even they aren't hydrogenated.

Myrna, LALPS might be a good one to try. And it's dirt cheap!

Well, here's the thing: according to the CurlChemist, polyquats don't cause build-up or any other troubles for curlies. However, some people, like kathymack, experience build-up that is very difficult to remove with a gentle shampoo. I'm one of these people. Basically I get massive build-up from polyquats which leaves my hair feeling weirdly coated. If I have used polyquats and my hair is wet, I can see frizz (and I am not frizz-prone at all). The only solution is using more agressive surfactants than I would like.

Kathymack is much better at explaining all this.

yes, I have read Kathy's issues with polyquats so I decided to investigate...I am not sure that is the issue with my hair. I think the larger issues are that I cant handle a lot of glycerin, and probably not protein either with my hair being coarse and low porosity. Jas, I have LALSG, and it has protein and glycerin; what about the PS?
A couple of other ingredients in Curlkeeper that I was curious about and found out this:

propylene glycol: "is able to lower the melting point of water, and so it is used as aircraft de-icing fluid. It is similarly used as automotive antifreeze."

DMDM Hydantoin: "A preservative that contains formaldehyde."

Gah! Who knew?
