In what sense crappy - dry, frizzy, won't curl well?

Sorry, should have been more clear...loose, frizzy. less defined...the back just doesnt curl well...right now i put product in very wet hair, plop, diffuse for a bit while bent over and hanging my head upside down, and then air dry.

It could just be that you have different curl patterns throughout your hair... many do. I have the same thing actually. Another reason I think this can happen, for myself at least, is that I have shorter layers in the front, but my back is all long length so it's weighed down more. Also I've seen people say that certain techniques give them less curl in the back like plopping.

I was having this problem when I was only scrunching in gels- for me, I wasn't getting enough product there. Now, I rake in all my products upside down, and to make sure I get that spot and my canopy, I take another blob of whatever I'm using, rub hands together, and dedicate that blob to my canopy and the back handful of hair. It solved the problem for me. I absolutely have to rake everything in to get good coverage.

I have the same issue. Periodically I have my stylist heavily layer that area so it springs up more and doesn't look so stringy. I also make a point that when I put my leave in condish in, I part my hair so I get some condish directly in that area. I also add more styling product to that area once I have run through the rest. And i try not to diffuse that spot for too long because it dries out way quicker than the rest. Its an ongoing battle. Lol!

I agree with the layers theory. I have the same issue that my back curls get more weighed down and aren't defined. I wonder if maybe you are not getting enough product into the back. I decided to experiment myself with that and really focus on the back. When I did that I noticed more defined curls. So maybe the next time you add your products pay special attention to that area.
