Default Flat undefined roots

As my hair has grown out, I have noticed my roots look undefined and puffy. Kinda of like cotton. I wonder if it's because I wear buns and ponytails so much. I add CURLS Passion Fruit Curl Control Paste for my edges. I twist them also because they don't always reach my ponytail. I wondering if as your hair grows, curls weigh down and your roots flatten out. I thought I might need more protein so I'm tossing that into my reggie along with adding oil to my roots as I used to do. Can anyone relate?

Maybe you need to be a little kinder on your roots and edges? Up dos and over styling can definitely damage delicate hairs especially around the face, I caused a lot of damage with 24/7 ponytails even tho I used no snag elastics. Are you using really gentle methods of securing your styles, satin or silk scrunchies and scarves for example? And are they loose or tight styles?

Are your roots and edges getting conditioned properly or are they mostly getting shampoo and styling products? Penetrating oils and hydrolysed protein are good but also consider humectants and emollients. Have you considered making something like an Ecostyler custard, adding extra oils and/ or aloe vera (humectant) to a strong hold gel so it's more nourishing?
2a-2c, medium texture, porous/ colour treated. Three years CG, growing out mechanical and chemical damage = breakage and very high porosity. Past armpit length heading for waist.
