Question Light Gel Recommendations?

So, I've found that thicker gels DO NOT work in my hair. I have tried "harder, thicker" gels including LA Looks Sport Gel and Biosilk Rock Hard Gelee. They DO NOT WORK. I ALWAYS end up with string, very stuff curls that are very hard to scrunch out. Right now I am using La Bella Lots of Curls and it is working well... but I'm sort of afraid that it might dry my hair out after awhile. Any recommendations?

By "light" do you mean light hold or thinner?

Sallys has the GVP liquid sculpting gel (knockoff of Sebastian wet), medium hold.
Volumax styling gel (medium thickness, medium hold),
Biotera gel (not real thick, sort of runny, medium hold)

Curly hair solutions sells Curlkeeper (can be ordered online).

I'm thinking less hold/less crunchy.

Curlsnswirls beat me to recommending the GVP liquid gel. I haven't used it but someone mentioned it in the Sally's (beauty supply) thread and it sounds like what you're asking about.

I just bought the gvp gel today while making my inner pj happy giving it a shot tomorrow. May mix it into my FSG if I like it. It is protein heavy but smells nice kinda like apples

I find gels are less crunchy and I get better clumps if I layer enough leave in conditioner underneath, use less and/ or dilute in the hand with water on application so they spread more easily. Otherwise anything with a lot of humectants such as propylene glycol (eg. Curl Keeper) but you need the right humidity/ dew points for that type to work for you. Or try aloe vera gel, flaxseed gel or okra gel.

My sister just convinced me to try ecostyler (I got the argan oil one) fr Sally's. I am a pretty loyal biosilk user, but this ecostyler was completely different and amazing! The gel itself is very thick and goopy feeling, and I could feel it clumping/grabbing my hair. I was afraid, it felt like I was going to end up with a very goopy head. However, it dried completely soft, no crunch and big thick curls. I realized that biosilk might be my whole problem, giving me stringier curls. I'd recommend giving this a try.

I find layering 2 light to medium hold gels works for giving good hold without (too much) crunch. Like FSG or okra gel + GVP liq. Gel, or you could use curl creams instead- they give pretty good hold with no crunch. I have figured out through trial and error that almost all gels give some crunch, but the less thick/ heavy gels are much easier to scrunch out. I tried LALSG the other day for the 1st time (it's my hubby's), and was alarmed by how hard it was to SOTC compared to my others. BRHG is the same way. Ideally I like be able to SOTC with a very light hand. If you want little to no crunch, you could try CJ CIAB, Curl Keeper.

I don't use gel right now, but I've always loved Jessicurl RR. It's basically FSG, but with mag sulfate so it enhances your curls.

Chloe, you're really making me want to try some okra gel now!

Tried the gvp liquid gel today and am pleased! It was crunchy at first but really easy to SOTC! Good hold and really easy application since its liquid. Going to mix it straight into my next batch of FSG and see how it goes

Question

I used Paul Mitchell Sculpting Foam today since it was raining. My hair looks way better with it than any of my gels... Maybe mousses would work better for me?

Please let us know how that works out for you. Tonight I made more FSG and used it along with the GVP liquid gel, leave in + fsg+ GVPLSG. So far it looks good. I will see how it holds up tomorrow.
