Never know what to expect when SOTC!

Though I've had pretty consistent hair lately with the products and techniques I am currently using, I still get anxious when I am SOTC. I was convinced my hair would be crap today because it just felt bad before applying my products. Almost coated I guess? It didn't have that slick feeling It usually has out of the shower.

So I scrunched in my very small amount of KCCC, smoothed and scrunched in a large amount of my FSG and finished with scrunching a small amount of BRHG. Diffused until about 80% dry as usual and clipped until dry.

I was surprised by the amount of root curl, springiness and tightness of my curls. Will I ever feel comfortable with my hair and routine?? Does anyone else feel this way?

I think I know what you mean (if I understood you right that is).
Before I SOTC my hair mostly looks horrible... horrible... like if I failed styling my hair.
After it, it mostly is okish to great. I never know what to expect and always feel like it will be a mess.
We should have a thread with before and after SOTC pictures, just to feel better and to see that it's not only us.

I think we're worrying way too much about having perfect hair every day. I've been thinking about this a lot lately and it seems that I'm the only one who sees any differences. My boyfriend, for example, can't tell when I'm having an exceptionally good day, or normal day, or a bad day.

I do understand your feeling, Jules. I don't like to SOTC and I'm fairly new to it, but on the other hand, I'm not really precise when it comes to styling my hair anyway. It's ironic because I'm a perfectionist, but I want to enhance my natural curl so I try to accept that it looks the way it does (while still dreaming of having perfect hair every day).

Right now, I wet my hair (usually with a spray bottle but for the first time in the shower without doing my washing routine), then apply a lot of FSG, plop for quite a while (about thirty minutes) and then let it air dry. I don't start SOTCing until completely dry and I do it carefully and gently to avoid frizz or disrupting the pattern. So far, it seems to work fairly well.

I think we'll never know what to expect. I find my curls (even though I know most people call them waves - someone even told me I had not curls or waves at all which I found very insulting) are very unpredictable, even when my routine is consistent. It's a surprise every day, especially now that I haven't found a routine that I love. Still searching.

Jules, all the pictures I've seen of your curls show great, clumpy, shiny curls. Don't worry too much - they look great, even when you might not always agree.

Lauraimes, thank you for your kind words. I was thinking how textured hair loves entropy and how even though you can do the same things each day, it rarely is the same.

You're welcome Jules!

I sometimes had the unpredictability when I've just had a great hair day, but I kind of like that my hair is never the same. It's never boring that way

I have to be honest with you that I sometimes struggle to convince myself of all this, but I'm noticing that it helps embracing my curls even more (I've never hated my curls though).

Funny I was just thinking yesterday, which was for me a bad hair day, that I need to stop worrying as my bad days now are still 100x better than my pre N.C. curls!

Whenever I see a pic of your hair I'm so envious THAT is exactly the hair I want instead of my whimpy waves (I'm being a little unfair to my hair, I've only done CG two months, and curly stying and it's really improved, but it will never be actually beautiful curls like yours ).

I think there are SO many variables you just will never have consistent results. Weather, environment, what we use in it, the AMOUNT we use in it, the rate it dries, the angle it dries. I mean, we just can't be absolutely exact in repeating everything and some of it like weather or environment we don't have control over (plus weather can change throughout the day. You may start at a dewpoint of 70 and be at 50 later in the day). So, I guess you really have to just be accepting of those times it doesn't come out how you expected. I know I have found a way to pin back my hair that no matter how it turns out, it will still be ok. Or there is always the "failure pull back" when it is utterly unviewable. I kind of think for me that is what is making my hair fun though. I'm never quite sure how it will turn out. Like a game or a sport
