2nd day hair hypothesis

Second day hair has been laughable for me so far, but I have an idea why and would love to hear thoughts.

If I let my hair air dry I'm a 2a/b but that pops up to a 2c/3a if I add product and diffuse. My thinking is that because I'm making it do something it doesn't want to do, it freaks out during the night and just flops.

My plan is to go down to just one product for definition and control (shea moisture souffle for now) and as I haven't the patience to really air dry, I will dry with the diffuser but without lifting or touching my hair to keep it as close to its natural pattern as possible.

My thinking is that this will result in hair that is doing what it wants consistently and will give me at least a chance at 2nd day hair. What do you think?

I think that's probably true for most of us that are more wavy than curly. My second day hair looks completely different than 1st day hair, but sometimes I like to mix it up and have the beach wave, crazy look- i.e. 2nd day hair, lol.

It's a possibility. For me, lately my 2nd day hair has been almost curlier than my 1st day. I think it is the optimum dew points that we are having here lately. It didn't behave that way for me. I find I can get 3 day hair if I use a good hard hold gel.

I don't really know if that hypothesis is correct or not.
For me it isn't anyway.

I'm having 2a-b hair productless, like you do, and 2c-hair if I put product in and diffuse for like 5-10 minutes and then let it airdry.

However, 2nd, 3rd and 4th day hair (I haven't tried 5th day hair or further) always look similar to my first day hair for me. (not exactly the same ofcourse, but similar.
If I can get good hair on day one (day one is still my biggest challenge, still have to find my ideal products), I know I will get good hair the days after that as well (unless I'm in a crazy weather situation that ruins it) and I am a really restless sleeper. I do pineapple though.

"how" do you sleep with your hair?
I couldn't do 2nd day hair when I was OC'd because even if I got a little curl on wash day it was GONE the second day and just a mess. Upping the protein made my curls stronger, and lowering the moisture keeps them from going limp for me. I am not using any stylers right now. I am a 2c.

just washing with a low poo that contains protein (Alba Naturals Coconut) and using Suave Naturals Coconut as both a RO and LI. No stylers right now, but this gives me pretty good curl, definition, low-ish frizz, and it feels and looks good. Also an occasional PT (liking the Palmer's Coconut Oil Formula which has cones) seems to be key for me.

I also have naturally 2a/b hair that i can style up to 2c as long as i diffuse. For me personally I find the opposite to be true. I get very consistent 2nd day hair, and I find my curls hold better if I make sure and use a hard hold product on day one and even after I diffuse to wait until it's 100% dry to SOTC. If I break the gel cast and it's even remotely damp, it's done for 2nd day hair, I think it's because any water weighing my fine hair down. I also can't use a leave in that's too moisturizing for the same reason. It melts my curls and they don't hold until the next day. I agree with Neleke as well, how you sleep is important. I pineapple with a satin scrunchi and a satin bonnet because I'm a violent sleeper and I don't want to disturb my hair.

I have tried every which way of sleeping with my hair, and I just end up with a limp esta best on day 2. I may need to accept that it's still a symptom of my previous creatine treatments and that only time will solve my issues. Protein doesn't seem to do anything for the lengths.

I may have to do a bc, even though my bf will have a fit

I think this is one reason I don't really like to do second day hair... though I have been able to lately, I often end up with a lot of bent or messed up curls. I have tried doing the pineapple and satin bonnets and both and they just don't work well for me. My hair is pretty long so I have a hard time getting it under the bonnet without having to push it in, and my hair just slides right out of a loose pineapple and again seems too long. Because of this it either falls out completely or I have to do it two times around instead of one and it leaves a mark. I also find that having my hair piled up on top like that, against it's natural direction, kind of hurts my head.

For me pineappling "hurts my head" for 5 minutes after I woke up. But 5 minutes is still ok. awelcome, do you move a lot when you sleep?
If not: maybe you could try getting a satin pillowcase and trying to lay your hair on it above you? (same thing for yoshimi ofcourse)
And yoshimi, maybe your styler doesn't have enough hold for you? Have you tried something with stronger hold? and have you tried "reactivating" your gel by spraying a bit of water and then scrunching?
I do have satin sheets/pillowcases. And I have tried putting my hair above me but it just slides back down as I toss and turn.

Eumm... just thinking, haven't tried this myself since I don't need it (I'm mostly fine with satin pillowcase en pineappling) .. but if you lose the bonnet, maybe it's an idea to sleep with your dry hair in a longsleevet-shirtplop?
You tie the sleeves around your head, so I would be surprised if you would even lose that?
Try and let me know if that worked I'm a bit curious because I don't know
I did try that one night, but it was too long of a plop and it just bent a lot of my curls in weird ways. I think you would need a stronger pattern to be able to do that. Mine are pretty delicate.
