Default Suggestion for expanding the hair typing system

Hi curlies!

I'm sure many of you have had difficulties with trying to fit your properties and routine/products in that tiny little space in your signature :P

The original hair typing system by Fia, which is used all over the internet, consists of pattern, texture, and thickness. F = fine, M = medium, C = coarse, i = thin, ii = medium and iii is thick. So I would be 3a M iii.

It leaves out porosity, and elasticity, though! So I thought, perhaps WE could think of codes/shortcuts for those? Could be convenient and consistent, and it would be easier to add into our signature :P .

My suggestion: 1P = low porosity, 2P = medium porosity, 3P = high porosity. - = low elasticity, -- = normal elasticity, --- = high elasticity. So I would be: 3a M 2P --- iii.

Just a suggestion. Was wondering if you people would like the idea of adding porosity and elasticity to the hair typing system. Oh and if you have other suggestions for typing the porosity and elasticity, then please post your idea

Edit: We're going with Lauraimes' suggestion!

So I would be:
F - LP - ME - HD

Aqua_Lily would be:
M - MP - HE - HD

Dusalocks would be:
C - HP - ME - HD

We need a better shorthand, I agree. (BTW, ohhhh so that's what those little iiis mean. Always wondered but too lazy to google.) So I'd be C 3P - iii. I've got to bump this. Everyone take a look at aqua_lily's suggestion because it's brilliant.

I think the - -- --- are a little confusing though, as in hard to read in a glance.

Maybe replace the - with an *? That's more visible. or a >. >>> or *** is very visible and very elastic.

How about for elasticity

1E-low elasticity
2E-normal elasticity
3E-high elasticity

So mine would be 3a-M-2P-ii-2E

I'm 3a-C-HP-iii-1E. I still contest that 1E though. My hair never breaks so I might bump myself up 2E. I think the hair analysis gave me that rating because my curls are looser?

I'm glad more people are liking this idea!

I also like Curlsnswirls's suggestion for elasticity. I agree it's easier to read than - -- ---. I've added it into my signature!

Hopefully more people will want to pick up this whole idea

This seems unnecessarily complicated. Newbies already get confused by all the abbreviations.

Your signature is a big as you want it to be...you have a picture in yours .

I think it's great to have some sort of a shorthand but I agree with Jessiebanana, it's pretty complicated. I always have to think twice about what every abbreviation stands for and newbies might be even more overwhelmed.

I'll think about it

Umm, I think all those numbers make it confusing? What about:

2A F ii LP ME (2a, fine, medium, low-po, med. elast) for me

And Dusa would be: 3A C iii HP LE

I'm still not sure about the elasticity one, but I already kind of think LP/HP in my head for the porosity. I think if its standardized for porosity and elasticity it will be easier to remember. So L=low, M=medium & H=high. Or should it be N=normal instead of medium?..

I know it may seem overly complicated at first glance, but here is why I think it would be good idea. If naturallycurly were to adopt this shorthand (and maybe we can convince them to), there would be a uniform way to think about hair typing, and hopefully it would take the emphasis off of the curl pattern and put it on properties which matter more. Especially when it comes to picking out products. So picture this: On the hair density page, where it says Low it also has a little box next to it that says "i", Medium "ii" and High "iii".

Curly Hair Tips, Styles & Products - NaturallyCurly

And then when you go to the width page it would be Coarse , a box next to it saying (C), Medium (M) and Fine (F).

Curly Hair Tips, Styles & Products - NaturallyCurly

Then I think it would also be amazing if Naturally Curly had you type yourself this way and put it on the main profile page. 3A C 3P 2E ii and all that jazz. And if people were to click on the little C going "what does that mean?", it would take you to the width page. What also would be awesome is if you go to the product review page and when people review you see their properties right there next to their screen names.

And then again, if you don't know what it means, you could click on the 3P and go to the porosity page there too. And then it would be super duper amazing if naturally curly could have a rundown that reads "this product is liked by people who have low porosity hair", rather than (or I guess in addition to) this product is popular with people who have 3B hair and whatnot.

I think a system like that might've actually helped me out when I was just starting to wear my hair curly. As it is, the CurlWhisperer has a pinterest that's kind of like that where she has recommendations for coarse, medium to fine hair. . . but if Naturally Curly were to adopt some sort of uniform system and acknowledge that properties are more important than curl patterns, it would make things easier overall.

And maybe we should use letters overall to make it more uniform. I don't know. But I'd like a shorthand.

Innovative, Dusalocks!

What would be more easily comprehensible to me would be something like this:

F = Fine
N = Normal (or: M = Medium)
C = Coarse

L = Low
N = Normal (or: M = Medium, whichever one we end up going for)
H = High

P = Porosity
D = Density
E = Elasticity

So I would be:
F - LP - HD - NE

Aqua_Lily would be:
N - NP - HD - HE

Dusalocks would be:
C - HP - HD - NE

Just to name a few examples of how it would work. This sounds much more logical to me, and might be easier to understand since I simply used the initial letters of each word.

Ooh! +1 for this!!
Those darn i's are still confusing.
I can read this straight through without using too many brain cells

But maybe we should use M for everything since it makes more sense for width.??
