So excited! Made a perfect batch of okra gel today!

Help me out here. Are honey and agave considered humectants?? If yes what are my alternatives to increase hold? I am in Colorado and we are lucky to get dews above 40 it is so dry and I think I should avoid humectants. I have already cut glycerin. Any ideas??

A lot of people add aloe vera gel to their FSG/okra gel- (not sure why I didn't, but will add it to my list of to-do experiments, lol!) It's a humectant too, but has hold as well. I've also read that the thickeners themselves have some holding powers.

I'm not a fan of aloe vera added to my okra gel. My hair was sooo fluffy and became over moisturized. But I do live in FL so maybe it might work better in colder weather. Also there is honeyquat you could add. Its suppose to give hold and reduce static frizz, good for low dews. I haven't used it yet, since I live in FL. But you can pm Kathymack about it, and even order a sample to try.

I think I'm going to make another batch tonight and use the quantities you & Kathy use and see how it comes out. I think I used too little of everything, but it seems to be working fine....

Looked on I herb and all I saw was a pound bag. Seems like a lot. Does the liquid work or maybe the capsules?

Making a batch tonight also. Going to try honey instead of agave nectar and I bought some grapeseed oil. Will add small amout like 5 drops or something. Fingers crossed. Using whole foods sliced frozen okra, maybe organic might yield slightly different results??? Chole let me know how urs turns out, since we live in the same area

I made another batch tonight and followed the add in proportions that you & Kathy do. I also added honeyquat, and used less agave. I'll use it tomorrow. I hope it's okay b/c I'm mailing some off to yossarian tomorrow in a trade! Cross your fingers!

I also used frozen sliced okra instead of whole (that I sliced myself).

Made a new batch last night too! But I was running late this morning and forgot to bring it in with me. Oh well. Tomorrow is another day

I did a test today by using last nights batch of okra as my only styler (I usually top with another gel) and it was awesome! Except....there are some random undissolved pieces of either Epsom or potassium sorbate floating in it. I can't see them (in the gel, or on my hair), but I could feel them. Oh well....still think its a great batch as far as performance!

I finally created a working batch 2 days ago.

I simmered 1/2 cup frozen okra in 3/4 cup filtered water for 20 minutes. I then strained the liquid and returned it back to the saucepan.

To thicken it, I added 1/4 tsp of cornstarch in 1/2 tsp cold water to the okra liquid. I didn't thicken, so I added the same amount once more. Again, it stayed pretty liquidy and again I added more cornstarch. So the total was about 1 teaspoon level cornstarch in 2 teaspoons cold water.

Because of the process with the cornstarch, I ended up simmering for another 15 minutes which brought the mixture down to a bit less than 1/2 cup total.

Since this was my first time adding cornstarch, I was hesitant to add more and took it off the heat to complete the last few steps. I added a pinch of sea salt, 1/4 tsp raw honey, squeezed in vitamin E from a 500mg softgel, and accidentally poured in about 1/4 teaspoon eucalyptus oil. Why eucalyptus? It just happened to be there and I knew it would hinder bacterial growth a bit.

I poured the completed mixture into a flip-top squeeze bottle and refrigerated while I washed my hair. I used about 2-3 tablespoons of okra gel in my hair. Because I scrunch things in my dense head of thick hair, I'm pretty sure I didn't coat all of it.

The results? It finally worked! My hair frizzed a bit during application, but it dried with hold and clumped my hair better than KCCC! (a section of hair didn't clump well, because I suck at distribution.) Considering the last two batches failed, I was pleasantly surprised! And even though the cornstarch didn't thicken it much, I'm pretty sure I owe the positive results to it. All hail cornstarch! Now to find a way to preserve the mixture.

Revised recipe (thanks KathyMack & ShellyRN for past posts and input!)

I used frozen okra, whole or sliced (I've now done both).

I added 1 1/2 Cups okra to a pot of 2 1/2 cups distilled water and 2 T marshmallow root (optional). Cooked on med-low for 15 mins. Raised heat to medium and cooked another 15 minutes- it was at a low boil this last 15. Raised heat to med-high and let boil hard for 5 more. Total cooking time 35 minutes, stirring occasionally.

I strained the liquid with a mesh strainer and added 1/2 t of xanthan gum to thicken, and mixed with an immersion blender. If you want it thicker, add more slowly. I like mine more runny.

This yielded about 1 1/2-2 cups, though I didn't measure it....

NOTE: All the add-ins are optional. If you want to do a basic recipe to see if you like it, you could just add thickener, any oil (except coconut), and agave nectar or honey!

2nd note: this gel should be refrigerated! I separated my portion and put the other half in the freezer.

I let it cool a few minutes, then whisked in these add-ins;

1/2 t citric acid (to reduce PH- available at health food stores)
1/2 t potassium sorbate (preservative- I had to order this online)
3/4 t agave nectar (for hold- available @ grocery store, in the sugar aisle)
1/2 t Epsom salt (curl enhancer- available at drug stores)
1/2 t grape seed oil (any oil except coconut will work)
1/4 t honeyquat
10 drops of vanilla fragrance oil

Done!

Worked amazing!!! I had an extra blender almost forgotten in my cupboard, so it's now my hair gel blender. My hair looks and feels amazing!! I used avocado oil and used a bit more Epsom (a pinch more) and 1 tsp Agave, as I didn't have any honeyquats. I stirred in blender and added about 8 drops lavender oil. Refrigerated over night. New HG!!!!

Think I'm liking the grapeseed oil added to mine for frizz control. but I can use it only as my refresher. Not as my primary product, leaves my hair too greasy for day 2 hair. Trying honey batch 2morrow night. Hoping it may help with clumping more. I have 8 bottles in my freezer, but I just want to keep experimenting

The SSI okra repair is a great li. I frequently use "milder" PTs as my leave in, especially if I use other products that are really rich. If your hair loves protein and use it frequently, it's not a great PT.

I finally ordered and received CJ Repair Me and did a treatment this morning. WOW, my hair is shiny and curly today! So I'm thinking I'll use the Okra Reconstructor as a RO/ LI.

Chloe, are you using a scale for the addition of germall plus? If so, what brand and weight range?

I'm updating my last post by saying I've had consistent results, but I did notice my hair feeling a bit producty when detangling on wash day. I'm gonna use pectin in place of cornstarch. Hopefully it fixes the issue without comprising the results.

If natural products use only citric acid and potassium sorbate as preservatives, then the same can be used in okra gel to preserve it, correct?
