So excited! Made a perfect batch of okra gel today!

I couldn't help but laugh at that emoticon. xD

Yes, I think you do. The only accurate way to get the proper percentage of germall plus in your mixture is by knowing the grams of your concoction so that you know how many grams of germall plus to add. I feel like someone else can explain the process better than I can, because I haven't used a preservative yet... :P

I've heard of people measuring out teaspoons once they know what it is in grams. I dunno the ratio, though.

Sorry, I never answered your question! From what I have read, the combo of citric acid + potassium sorbate is not a well rounded preservative combo. If you don't want to store it in the fridge, you will need something stronger.

I'm going to hijack this thread for JUUST a minute, and bellyache:

I've been all over my massive city, and cannot find frozen okra ANYWHERE! Does it not ship to Canada or something?! I've seen it fresh a few times, but I've visited over ten grocery stores and NOTHING.

Okay. Go back to being excited about your okra gel! One day, I'll ALSO make it!

I've tried most of the ethnic grocers! They only bring in fresh okra while it's in season. Perhaps I should learn to grow my own!!

I finally ordered and received CJ Repair Me and did a treatment this morning. WOW, my hair is shiny and curly today! So I'm thinking I'll use the Okra Reconstructor as a RO/ LI.

Chloe, really? I wonder if the producers of KCCC know this? Or am I supposed to store it in the fridge...? Oops.

A big part of it has to do with the fact that regardless of how careful we are, when we create recipes at home, it's not anywhere close to a sterile environment.

That makes sense. Dang. I will have to purchase some germall plus in the future as well. Thanks for all the info! I enjoy reading all this stuff.

Update on okra gel:
Pectin worked much better than cornstarch at thickening, but provided no hold.
I will probably return to using cornstarch for the time being. Its so cheap!

I don't admit to knowing anything about chemistry OR cooking, lol, so I'm just experimenting as I go along. If you keep your batches small and keep them in the fridge, you really don't have to worry too much about preservatives anyway. But it would me nice to know I could take it along for a weekend trip or not worry if I forget to pop it back in the fridge.

Have you tried xanthan gum as a thickener? I find it a little difficult to work with, but it does the job.

It didnít smell bad and when I used it, there was no difference in performance. But I was desperate at that time. I would not leave it in the fridge for more than a couple weeks. I leave mine in the fridge till Iím ready to use it for the day. And my extra bottles I freeze.

I also tried the batch with honey, made my hair dull and frizzy. So im sticking with agave nectar for hold, and small amount of grapeseed oil. Sometimes simple and sweet is better

Chloe, the only reason I haven't tried xanthan gum is because its a bit pricey compared to the pectin and cornstarch. Does it leave anything in your hair?
And your first batch lasted 7 weeks?! Holy cow. Without preservatives?

I think the best way to store it without having to make small batches all the time is by freezing small amounts and taking them out as you need them.

No, the batch I kept for 7 wks in the fridge had preservatives. Sorry I didn't clarify that.

Since I've been making it myself, that's exactly what I do- put some in the freezer and a small amount in the fridge.

Oops, sorry! I meant to say if your hair felt producty the next day or anything like that when using xanthan gum?

Sweet. I just have to find time to make batches when classes come around again. I'll probably use preservatives AND freeze 'em. Gotta be safe!

Thanks ladies. That eases mind a lot. I was concerned about not using it in time, but now I believe we are going to be just fine. I want to get ice trays so I can defrost a bit at a time. Someone told me the put a cube or two in a ziplock, toss it in the bottom of the shower and when they are done showering, it's perfectly defrosted. I love that idea!!!!
