I make large batches (10 cups last time) and freeze it in smaller containers. Add potassium sorbate and citric acid. It takes me a long time to go through 4 oz (I only use anyone product once in five days, if that.) I've had okra gel, or FSG, out for LONG periods of time and never had a problem.

When I made my first batch of FSG, and didn't use preservative--it went "off" in just a few days.

I was wondering... does okra gel become solid when frozen?

I ask, because this batch I made doesn't freeze. o.O
Like, I'm keeping it in the freezer and can use it at any given moment.

That's weird...is everything else in your freezer frozen?

Haha, yes. Completely frozen solid. This is freaking me out a bit. Could be, because its next to a gel ice pack? The pack is frozen solid as well...

I got a sample of Kathy's gel! It was the first thing I tried but didnt get great results. I kept my routine the same as I have the last few weeks (lopoo, Darcy's pumpkin RO and LI) and then used the okra gel instead of CK and LAL gel) My hair looked ok overall but not as good as other days - it didnt dry as fast and it felt heavy and kind of grimy, and by the end of day 2 it was a hot mess. When i washed it today it felt very dry and crunchy in my hands - something I hadn't felt before.

Anyway I am sure I am just not using it right. Those of you that love it.. what do you suggest?

Hmmm, that's definitely nothing like my experience with it! I think Rytoka had a similar experience. I always top it with another gel. I would try 2 different ways...1- without a LI, top with LAL, 2- with a LI, top with LAL gel.

I do agree that okra gel increases the drying time.

My latest issue (on my last TWO batches!!) is I'm getting this grit in my gel.

I thought it was the potassium sorbate, so I pre made a solution to make sure it was fully dissolved.

I made FSG last week, used the solution, and had no grit.

Now I'm thinking it must be the thickener! I didn't use any in my FSG. I used xanthan gum in my 1st gritty okra batch, but this time I used hydrocellulose (or however you spell it).

Will try without leave in next time. I'm going to go back and read some posts to see if i can get some clues there too. How much do you use? I had a little puddle about the size of a quarter on my hand - and some of it fell to the shower floor - so I didnt think i used too much - but maybe I did?

That sounds like the amount I use- sometimes even less. I really just put a bit in to increase slip so my products spread more easily- my hair doesn't need much additional moisture at this point.

I cowash daily, RO after letting it sit about 5 minutes, (which I jus found out now has cones,so that will be changing) use my cowash as a LI (very very little!!), a drop of avacado oill as a sealant (again VERY little), my okra gel and plop. I used a blender on stir to make my batch and I like mine to be more runny. I also used 1tsp agave and 1tsp avacado oil instead of grapeseed oil, although that seems to be more of a personal preference. I have coarse hair and this routine makes my hair Fabulous!! Absolutely no crunch and my coils are wonderful.

I aksi tried putting some in a travel container and freezing it for the gym.
That way I can defrost what I need in the shower after my work out and swim. Works great!

Yesterday i tried it again.. I washed, conditioned, and did not do a leave in. I added the okra gel to my CK and then topped with LAL gel - my hair was fine, and day 2 hair looks nice too. I did notice I had less crunch with my gel and not much hold through the day yesterday.. so I do think the heaviness and grimy feeling was from using too much - so that is good.. Now I need to figure out how to use it tomorrow...

Try using the okra gel without a LI, and without the CK, just make sure you do a nice RO in the shower and leave it in for a while before rinsing. Then top the okra with gel. I think Kathy uses quite a bit of humectants in her okra gel, so adding CK (loaded with humectants) was too much, and decreased the hold power of the gel.

The reason i mixed with ck was because i didnt have any slip in my hair since i didnt use a leave in. I wasnt sure If I could distribute the gel evenly and didnt want to use too much. wondering if i can thin the gel out with water in the bottle? I did have day three hair today - not the best hair day - curlwise but my scalp still feels somewhat fresh and doesnt look like three day scalp.

Does anyone know where I can buy some FSG and/or okra gel? I can't even boil noodles and definitely DO NOT feel up to trying this on my own...much less buying all the exotic ingredients before I'm sure I like it. I'm DYING to try them, though! Then I feel I could commit and take a gel cooking class at culinary school if necessary. I tried to get some from BotticelliBabe on Etsy, but we all know how that turned out...:/ I can see how it would be tough to buy due to the shelf life, but it seems like it could be mailed out frozen and be Ok? BotticelliBabe must have packed hers full of preservatives? I gotta find this stuff somewhere!

You can buy samples from Kathymack! They're large enough to try it a few times.

ok last night I cowashed, conditioned, then put watered down okra gel in... it was a little tricky at first because i didnt have much conditioner in my hair. once i started working it in, i could rake my fingers through ok. I took a chance and put a little more in since i didnt have anything else in it.. then topped with the LAL gel.. Well my hair feels great, but my attempt at an overnight plop was very unsuccessful. So I need to rewet it today anyway

Sorry, I just read this again....are you talking about the amount of leave in, or okra gel? When I responded the first time, I thought you were talking about the leave-in, as I read it again, I think you were talking about the amount of okra gel???

Ok, so that is the amount of LI that I use.

But, if you were talking about the okra gel, I use A LOT of it!!!! I make mine runny, like a snot consistency and I keep it in a pump bottle. I probably use 8-10 pumps on my head, and I have chin-length hair! Then I top it with about a tablespoon of hard hold gel.

I use an obscene amount of gel in my hair though.

It sounds like Kathy makes her okra gel into a more pudding-like consistency. But still, use WAY more than you would with other gels.

Yes I meant the okra gel - so here's what I did today. I washed last night and left a lot of CJ repair me in overnight.. knowing I'd have to rewet this morning anyway. I rinsed - bur really there wasnt "too much" CJ in my hair - it felt nice this morning. I rinsed and supersoaked my hair, then raked in "snot-like" okra. I watered it down a little .. haha. I put a bunch in. then my LAL gel over it. It looks fine today, but feels kind of weighed down.I guess I don't know what I am supposed to notice. I think I like it, but maybe not enough to go through the trouble of making it.. I think I get similar or maybe better results with some other things. I do like that it is home made and natural - I'm just feeling too lazy these days! lol. I still have enough for one more application - I might stick it in the freezer and try it when the weather cools off - just for fun. Do you think that 3-4 months in the freezer is too long?
