Ok so ever since middle school I have been straightening my hair every week, and now that I am in college, I have decided to embrace my curls. I've been using gels such as ouidad hair gel and now I use keuene sculpting hair lotion. I wet my hair everyday and then apply these products. However, I am tired of my hair looking wet and crispy. I want them to look soft. My hair frizzes easily and usually if I let it air dry or don't apply to much product it becomes dry looking and frizzy and looses a lot of its curly texture and pattern. It becomes one frizzy messy ball of hair on my head.Could anyone suggest any products I could use and techniques to keep my hair tamed, and not crispy or wet looking! thanks a bunch.!!!

Also whenever I put the gel in and it dries my curls tend to look separated from one another and I have found products that you can get from the drug store don't work on my hair, unless I am applying them in the wrong way
Simple answer for a start:

When it is dry but still looks wet and crispy, flip your hair upside down and gently scrunch out the crunch.

Not- so simple answer: What is your routine and what products do you use - from stepping into the shower until you're "done." How wet is your hair when you put your gel in, etc?

I reccomend the Curly Girl book by Lorraine Massey - the new one with DVD or the E book. There are video clips that really helped me see how to do it. I can read it and interpret, but I am much better visually.

The best way to choose ingredients/products is by hair properties. Here's a link to help you with yours Curly Hair Basics | Live Curly Live Free It will also explain why you choose certain types of ingredients and what they do. Once you determine your properties, you can look for others with hair like yours and see what they use. It's the best place to start.

Another thing is to read and learn. There are stickies at the top of each forum. Good information to read.

Hi Wheretostart,
my general routine is i get in the shower, and then once i get out I take a towel and just scrunch my hair with it so it gets rid of some of the water. Then i wait till its dry a little more. So i would say on a scale of one to 10, 10 being really wet, it goes from being a 10 to a 6. then I just apply my gel and let it dry some more and thats it.
What shampoo do you use? Conditioner? Do you use a leave in conditioner? What brand of gel?

Without knowing your hair type, products being used this advice is pretty common accross the board: Apply your gel in the shower. Ideally you'll have a leave in conditioner too, then gel.. anyway when your hair is still soaking wet flip it (I do this after I condition and rake my leave in conditioner through soakin wet hair) gently rake gel through.. yes while hair is still very wet to help with even distribution. INstead of ringing out your hair or rubbing with a towel.. scrunch it upward... I cup my hand at the end of my hair, lift up and squeeze. this way you are squeezing water out and encouraging clumping. AT this point you dont want to do anything other than scrunch - no combs, no raking your hands through etc. squeeze out a good amount of water this way then plop (google it) or squeeze more out with a microfiber towel or old tshirt (same way.- lifting up and encouraging curl.) Your terrycloth towel will make friz.
