Dry and tangled

My hair feels dry and tangles easily lately. I feel like it needs something but I am not sure what. I don't think I am using anything that builds up but that is what it feels like.
Any suggestions? Thank you!

The SM products are mostly oils and butters that act more as sealers then for moisture. You might try switching some of those out for something with emollients and protein.

Agree with Lynae butters are terrible for build up on some, specially fine hairs. Choose your products based on your hair properties, dew points and the ingredients.

My hair is fine/low porosity. I use a lot of really "rich" products, but don't care for the SM products, especially the Coconut & Hibiscus line. It's just too heavy if you understand the difference. Sits on my hair and doesn't bet absorbed. Had to wash it out (I use natural soap bars to cleanse.)

My hair only tangles when I use a product it doesn't care for (it's castor oil and mineral oil that do it to me.) You may be able to cowash the oil/butter out, if not try a gentle lowpoo or cleansing conditioner with coco b in it.Then try some "lighter" products.

I like shea moisture, depends on your hair type, also tresemme naturals conditioner

Thank you ladies!
Any suggestions for products then? I have been rotating the GTTT and SM MR shampoo and conditioners. Kathymack I agree about the SM CSM, sometimes it feels like it just sits on my hair. I live in FL so we have high humidity if that matters.

There are a lot of folks who live in FL on nc.com. So, that shouldn't matter. Here's a thread that might help http://www.naturallycurly.com/curlta...-dew-tips.html

I recommend you clarify if you haven't done so already. Even light products slooowly build up on your hair, so it could be months before you notice anything. If that doesn't help, do a protein treatment next time you wash followed by a moisture treatment (so that your hair doesn't dry out).

Good luck!

Good idea. What should I use?

Lynaea 06-14-2013 05:48 PM

Our properties are very similar, my faves are in my siggy. I prefer more natural products and my hair has yet to meet a protein it didn't like.

For my hair I look for protein, emollients like fatty alcohols, few to zero oils or butters and NO glycerin :)

I've had decent results with DermOrganic, Mill Creek Botanicals, Curl Junkie, Giovanni, Natures Gate, Cure Care and Ion from Sally's, SheScentIt and Spiral Solutions.

For clarifying, you can use a low sulfates shampoo with no proteins or silicones. I hear VO5 kiwi lime clarifying shampoo works well for that. I think it also has EDTA which removes mineral deposits that result from hard water. If you browse the hair aisle, you might find other shampoos labeled clarifying.

Yes they are! Are those shampoos or conditioners you listed? I have the Giovanni Tea Tree and love that one. I was looking at AOGPB but it has glycerin and idk if that matters in products we rinse out.
Thank you!

They are all conditioners although I really like the DermOrganics lowpoo. All the AO RO's contain witch hazel and glycerin (I think), I used AO before going CG and did revisit the GPB but I wasn't impressed this time around. My wave is really loose though so it may just be too moisturizing for me even with the protein. I recently discovered that even a cowash with glycerin near the top of the list will give me major frizz :puker:

Tonight I washed with HETT which was my first sulfate since Jan. After I used GVP CB and left it on for a while. I used a little LI but didnt use any products and just air dried. My hair feels much better and super soft.
Thank you!

Lynaea which Natures Gate products did you use? They seem easy to find so I was thinking about getting one of them.

I've got the Herbal condish which has glycerin as the fourth ingredient and an older formulation of the volumizing condish with glycerin about midway down the list. I don't think I've even used that one yet. It looks like all the NG co's have glycerin now ..... Maybe in the winter, sigh.

Ya that is what I was seeing too. I am looking at the Mill Creek Biotin Cond. though, it looks good. Have you tried that one?

I definitely want to stay away from glycerin too :)
