Back of the head and part - Help please!

I am having trouble styling the back pf my head and most days my part doesn't stay through product application and modified turban. So then I have to meddle with my hair which inevitably breaks up my lovely clumps and ultimately contributes to frizz. I also end up having to relocate clumps that don't go back where they belong. Most of this is at the back of my head. How do you get your hair to go where you want it without messing with it too much?

BTW, I apply product upside down soaking wet and then wrap my hair gently with a tshirt - no plopping for me!

I don't have a part or at least not a combed one, combs give me flat, straight roots and/ or frizz. I let it fall roughly where it wants, flip to the other side if I need volume, loosely bobby pin the front if it looks terrible.

The back of my hair is my problem area too - partly a looser curl pattern, partly the way I handle it. I was upside down which does mean the hair is plastered flat against my head, so plopping plastered flat against my head makes that even worse. I would have thought wrapping would have a similar squashing effect?

Also what I find it the hair being finer above the nape plus gravity when dripping and applying products, plus pressure of fabric dries that area too fast so it goes straighter/ fluffier, my crown is more visible.

Sometimes I add more water to the nape and let it run into the back, sometimes I 'plop' in a shower cap so the water can run back the other way, increasingly I scrunch the excess water out with a flour sack towel concentrating on the wetter top.

Still struggling with consistent clumps at the back, need to apply product right to the roots, not miss spots, enough water as before. Sometimes areas that aren't falling right when wet or even after diffusing actually settle down into good hair within an hour or two if you leave the heck alone!

CHS roller jaw clips - and stop wrapping your hair. Just scrunch it with what ever you use.
I have a cowlick thing in the back that looks so weird! :P
I try to not make a formal part, but kind of guide my hair to part on the side during styling.( much head flippage)
I need to learn how to clip properly. I think I'm doing it wrong since it really hurts my scalp when I do it.
So basically I need to accept dripping wet hair until I have everything in place? Not really sure I can handle that.

just a quick question its sorta off topic but here goes, alslgirl2002 what is a modified turban? Firefox7275 how do you plop with a shower cap? I am still having trouble with this part of my routine. I either get my hair to dry with my microfiber towel and get the frizzies or if its to wet it takes forever to dry. By the way im 2a with fine hair. Im also not sure when to comb it.If i do it after i towel dry i loose my waves and it breaks up my clumps but if i do it before i scrunch with my towel my hair gets messy and weird wonky waves. Do you have any suggestions i would love to get your input. Sorry one last thing when do you put your product in, When your hairs wet or damp and do you comb it to distribute the product? Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

I wouldn't recommend brushing your hair once you get out of the shower because with wavy fine hair, your likely to lose the curl quite a bit. After the shower I apply KCCC (I LOVE IT!) gently scrunch with a cotton t-shirt, and diffuse my hair on low with medium or low heat. Diffusing it kind of "locks" the curls/waves into place better for me. Sometimes I take random strands right after scrunching and twist the hair to help clumps that aren't curling very well.

I pull the shower cap open as wide as I can with both hands, drop my hair in, pull the back of the cap to the nape and flip the right way up. I use a regular shower cap not a disposable one because it's larger so easier to get on. Shower cap won't take any water out, just lets products 'soak in' and water run towards the ends so it's easier to blot out without overdrying the ends.

I also switched from microfibre to flour sack towels, I think the microfibre was taking too much water out and leaving fluff/ poof, flour sack seems more controllable. I squeeze gently so I don't lose all the product in the towel it just wicks away water. Fine hair is particularly prone to drying out too quickly because it's got more surface area, so is porous hair which I have.

Why are you combing once out of the shower? That is not part of the Curly Girl method, have you read the book or all the stickies? Just comb to detangle only, when in the shower with your head slathered in conditioner. Method is also applying to dripping hair, there are some useful Devachan salon videos on YouTube, also check out the clumping links in the techniques sticky.

A few curlies comb to distribute products but AFAIK that is basically 'modified' CG and generally only works for those with a strong curl pattern. Those with weaker patterns often 'scrunch and pump', some might lightly smooth over frizzy sections. If your hair takes too long to air dry, diffuse it to partly dry, that is also part of the method.

Taking the "T"s of the tshirt, I gently wrap them around my head, bringing them to the front of my head. Then I take the long edge of the shirt and gently wrap it around my hair - no twisting! Just wrap gently then fold the wrap back on top of your head the way you would a traditional towel turban. The key is to be gentle so you do not straighten your hair. I only leave it in the turban for about 10 minutes to capture the worst of the water dripping. Then I use the tshirt to scrunch out a little more water from the ends - but this might be too much for certain hair types. Sometimes I add a little more gel to my canopy at this point to help hold down the frizz. I also sometimes scrunch portions of my hair to encourage wave at this point, but in a very limited way so as to reduce frizzing.

As for how I apply product. First, I only comb during cowash. Once I rinse out cowash, then I only finger comb. I do rake through my product upside down and then scrunch n pump while soaking wet. This is really helpful to evenly distribute product.

thanks for your responses to my questions. Firefox7275 i do detangle and comb my hair during the conditioning process but then once i rinse the conditioner out my hair is matted down to my scalp from rinsing it. i know its probably from my hair being soo sooo fine. But its so slick to my scalp i cant even get my fingers in to fluff it up. I have tried rinsing and combing upside down and its aa no go. While these methods do give me good clumps when i turn right side up my hair in the back is all crazy no matter what and then if itry to manipulate it so the back is laying down i loose my waves. Maybe im doing something wrong when i flip it over. I flip my head over so that im facing my legs and comb from the back towards the end of my hair. Its like my hair sticks all together and then when i turn right side up my hairs on the top of my head like a dr suess character from the grinch movie. The ends of my hair are ok but its the roots maybe.

Well sorry to have written you a book but its hard to explain. I wish there was a video demo but when i watch videos where they comb or rinse upside down it never shows the back of the hair. Please if you have any advise i would greatly apreciate it. Thanks

I tip slightly to one side and then the other (so my ear is facing my knee) to achieve this and loosen the back from being plastered to my head.

Just because it looks crazy wet does not mean it will look crazy dry, don't try to manipulate your hair other than clipping the roots, that is not part of the CG method. If you do flip right way up to clip say, just lightly run coated palms over the crown to ensure the whole are is covered in products. Shaking the head works for some to loosen the roots, I feel it straightens my waves tho so only do this very very lightly if at all.

Many of the videos in this playlist are from the back of the head, as are loads of the Devachan ones

On the Curly Girl book Facebook page there are loads of before and after photos of the backs of heads from the Devachan salon so presumably the same techniques..

I agree with firefox - try diffusing upside down until hair is dry. You might want to try this technique that some are talking about right now

This thing. Is AMAZING!!!
