Smile Won't curly on top!

I have 3B hair before I had my daughter it was all curly. Now the top of my hair doesn't want to get curly. I don't know because now it is longer a little more than before a little past my shoulders. I have to use a diffuser but when I do it's kind of like straight wavy on top. My ears down it gets curly what to do? Thanks guys!
P.S. Someone told me to get a root perm?

You don't need a root perm if the ends are curly and you risk damaging your hair if you go ahead, you probably still have the curl it's just hiding. Have you read the stickies and are you following the Curly Girl method or something similar?
