Default Help! White, Chunky Gel

Hi ladies,

I'm a no-cone CG, and sometimes, when I apply gel on top of my leave-in, it turns into these wet, white chunks all over my hair, like watered-down cottage cheese. Yuck! This has happened mostly with Fruit of the Earth aloe vera gel, over top of both Suave Naturals (multiple scents) and Tresemme Naturals (the moisturizing one with aloe and avocado). However, it's also happened a little bit with the LA Looks Nutra Curl, also over the Tresemme, and recently over Shea Cashmere V05. It mostly comes off on the t-shirt after I take down my plop, and my hair seems fine once it's dry, but it's disgusting. My only conclusion is that some of the ingredients don't like each other. Has this happened to any other curly girls? Anyone know precisely what's going on?

Thanks for your help, ladies

I remembered reading this when I first started, and it has more to do with curl creams, but since the aloe vera gel is a humectant, maybe that is the problem. But it is definitely an issue with products not working together- I have not experienced this yet though, so I can't say for sure which products aren't jiving.

6. Leave in

A lot of people just use their cowash conditioner as a “leave-in” conditioner. Basically, you scrunch a small amount of conditioner into your hair after you're out of the shower. This is step one of your "base coat" (as Rudeechick calls it).

7. Curl cream
This is step two of your base coat. Curl creams promote curl formation and give your curls extra hold. NOTE: If you use a curl cream that has humectants in it, DO NOT use it over your conditioner and skip the leave-in step. If you mix the two, you’ll be left with little white flecks all over your hair – don’t say you weren’t warned!

What gel are you using? You're right that it's probably a conflict in ingredients, but I've used several gels over Tresemme Naturals (BRHG, KCCC, MGA, Ecostyler, FSG) and haven't had any problems with it. It may be that you need to use a different gel.

I'm using the LA Looks Nutra Curl (my hair's apparent favorite) over top of Shea Cashmere V05 and a little Shea Moisture. The chunkage isn't nearly as bad with this combo, especially if I put it on quickly and don't scrunch or touch too much before I move to my plop

I know I've tried two of the EcoStyler gels, and my hair didn't like them. I'm afraid I don't recognize the other ones you mentioned.

So apparently it's humectants that do that? I should have been a little more specific with my routine--I apply the LA looks Nutra Curl, which has avocado, before my plop and the aloe vera after my plop. That's really helped cut down on chunkage, but I was getting a lot more when I'd put the aloe vera on immediately.

I get it if I try to put gel directly on top of my LI. Usually I apply LI, comb it through, let it sit a bit, then run my head very quickly under the water to smooth the tine lines and distribute a bit more. If I do this - no white stuff, if I forget - gooey white stuff throughout hair. Yuk.

I make a concerted effort to be glycerin free but my current LI has some at the bottom of the list. ???

Some products are not compatible ingredients wise or pH wise: some thickening agents or stabilisers only work in specific pH ranges for example. Whilst I know lots of people rate aloe vera body gels for hair, if the product is formulated for the body it has never been tested over the top of conditioners so results will be unpredictable. IIRC some conditioners don't work at all in an SMT deep treatment (conditioner, aloe, honey DIY mix) they 'curdle'.

Have you tried mixing a little of each of two products off your hair to see what happens? It may be the two are completely incompatible, or maybe you need to distribute better.

Happens to me every time, I had to stop using gel, it dries my hair out anyways, and some products just don't mix

Sorry!
KCCC = Kinky Curly Curling Custard
BRHG = Biosilk Rock Hard Gelee
MGA = Max Green Alchemy
FSG = flax seed gel (homemade)

It's a good idea to try mixing a bit of whatever you're laying in your hand first to see if anything happens. Usually it's an ingredients conflict, but really sometimes I don't know why it happens. Many people report conflicts using KCCC over other products, for example, but I put it over all kinds of things and haven't had an issue yet. The BRHG is one gel that seems to work with most LIs, from what I've read. It's a hard hold gel, though.

I did try mixing the Nutra Curl and aloe together for a little while, but honestly, I don't remember what happened with that in in terms of chunkage. Oops LOL. I changed to the layering approach that I'm doing now (NC, plop, then aloe) because it seems to give my hair better hold in the long run.

Ah, okay Usually I'm able to figure out the abbreviations. Thanks

I have tried mixing things in my hands. The Nutra Curl is usually okay over V05 as long as I don't scrunch/touch too much or let it sit too long before plopping. I just washed today, and there was some chunkage, but not as bad as I've had before, and it pretty much vanished when I put on the aloe vera Hmmmmmmmm. Curiouser and curiouser.
