Substitute for Curl Keeper

Like Tree3Likes

Who has tried KY Lube instead of Curl Keeper. From what I was reading the ingredients are very similar.
I think this is a common substitution.
fine - low/normal porosity - medium density - normal elasticity.

Currently using:
Cowash: Cure Care diluted with water 1:1
RO: Cure Care, V05 Kiwi Lime
Styler: UFD CM (old formula), FSG + CNPF
PT: IAgirl's gelatine

Experimenting with: no guar hydroxypropyltrimonium chloride, gelatin gel

Recent findings: my hair likes Cure Care diluted with water as a cowash; does NOT like guar h.c.!

iherb discount code: CFN646
Curl keeper does not work for me because of the polyquat.
As a great substitute the generic versions of Lube from CVS and Walmart work great.

My hair hates everything Deva curl and Curl Keeper,
Do you get any hold from curl keeper/ky? Or is it just frizz control?
2A/B. Mix of fine, medium, and coarse (mostly medium). Dense. Mix of normal and high porosity.
Dry climate.

No hold, just frizz control with the lube. I'm going to apply it before I had the gel.
No hold, but clumps and frizz control

With the Curl Keeper you get hold w/frizz control. I use a gel anyway so I really don't need the extra hold so I'm going for the lube.
I was very curious about the CVS generic lube. Here are the ingredients:

Purified Water; Glycerin; Propylene Glycol; Sorbitol; Hydroxyethylcellulose; Methylparaben; Benzoic Acid; Sodium Hydroxide

Darn that glycerin!!!!!

CVS Lubricating Liquid - CVS pharmacy

Hmmm I guess they make some glycerin-free lubes too. Astroglide makes one, Sliquid too. Very interesting.

Sliquid Naturals H2O Personal Lubricant - Water based glycerin and paraben free intimate lubrication

Hmmm I think I will try one of these. Hey at least if it doesn't work for my hair I can always uhhh.... use it for its intended use. Waste not want not.

That's what I thought Wavy! LOL at least it may not go totally to waste!

Here Is another thing? Jelly or liquid. It seems the jelly ingredients has a slight difference.

I'm def going to have to try this!
Okay so I ordered 2 "lube cubes" from Sliquid... its a box that has little packets of the different lubes they have. There were a few I wanted to try. They're all glycerin-free. I got the "Essentials" one and the "Organics" one.

Organics Lube Cube: The Sliquid Shop - Natural intimate lubricants, lotions, and massage oils. Play Safe, Longer!
Sliquid Naturals Lube Cubes - Sample collections of your favoriteglycerin and paraben free intimate lubricants.

Anyway, so far I've tried the H2O lube, and these were the ingredients:

Purified Water, Plant Cellulose (from Cotton), Cyamopsis (Guar Conditioners), Potassium Sorbate, Citric Acid

I used it on my hair alone with nothing under or over. It behaved in some positive ways like a jelly product like SS CEJ.... but it made my hair dull also? And the other weirder thing was that it made my hair ashy... like grayish. My hair is med-dark brown but if anything has honey or slightly auburn (not gray) undertones.

Does anyone know what ingredient could be causing this? The plant cellulose?

I'm not that excited to try the other lubes now....

Whether or not it holds one's hair, it does have VP/VA, which I believe is for hold and the lube does not have that, now, does it? (why would you want it to.....)

I think most curlies use another product with CK, like I do.

Like many of you I'd seen waterlily716's YouTube video on drug store lube as a substitute for Curl Keeper. I am down to the last drops of my Curl Keeper so I went and got a tiny bottle from Rite Aid.

It was actually not much less expensive than Curl Keeper. $4.99 for a 2.5oz bottle ($1.99 per oz.) Curl Keeper that I was ordering off soap.com was $17.15 for 8oz ($2.14 per oz.) But, i figured i'd be more convenient than having to order it online, if i get the same results.

I usually apply my Keeper to still wet hair under my gel and rely on it only for frizz reduction, cause my gel does the hold.

I've tried the lube in the exact same way twice and I haven't gotten much frizz reduction at all and i feel like it slowed down the dry time on my hair TREMENDOUSLY. Anyone else have this problem?

Should I be using it differently? Today I might try only applying gel out of the shower and then adding the lube when i SOTC.

A few days ago I used about a dime size of KY brand and a pinch of epsom salts and then followed with gel. I had AMAZING curls and they lasted 3 days. Strange, considering I have always avoided glycerin in all my products. I thought glycerin in high dews would end in a frizzy disaster??? But my hair seems to like it??? Weird, stubborn, unpredictable curly hair!!!!

I have a full bottle of the CVS brand liquid that I don't like to use in the bedroom. Maybe my hair will like it instead

-edit-

I have TWO FULL bottles of KY brand liquid that I don't plan on using for it's original purpose. I think I just might throw them away. I can't exactly give them away
