For me it was just the worst build up ever. There is nothing I can compare it to. My hair felt disgusting and it wouldn't low poo clean, so I couldn't use conditioner properly.
^^^^ This! It only happened with one gel- it had a PQ as the 2nd ingredient. My hair felt like it had a plastic film on it that I couldn't wash out. I had to use a sulphate poo after low pooing twice. It felt like that wet and dry. I did not have the frizzy-when-wet thing.

I still use styling products with PQs and haven't had another episode like that. It was that one particular gel (biotera) that gave me the issue.

My hair was frizzy when wet and dry did not curl anymore and felt like straw. It took a sulfate loaded shampoo twice to get it out. My offender was Curl Keeper.

Not all polyquats cause problems, it is a huge family of ingredients with different properties - some are completely water soluble, some not.

So...is polyquat-4 CG-friendly or not? I checked the gel I've been using and it has polyquat-69 which isn't listed in the article. I haven't had any issues with that gel so far...but I recently tried HETT mousse and HESMU which both have polyquat-4 and I hope I don't have to remove it with a sulfate shampoo now..:S

This pretty much goes for anything, if you're using it and not experiencing build up, leave it be.
I have problems with 4, 7 and 10, that I know of, so I stay away from all polyquats.

In the definition of 10, they use the term "film former." For me, the film doesn't come off without a stronger surfactant and several washes.

Unfortunately I couldn't find more of a scholarly article, so this one is a little iffy since it has '.com,' but I figured it would assist with just a jump start at least.

My PQ problem was with PQ4 as the 2nd ingredient in a gel. However, one of my favorite gels has PQ10 (I think!) as one of the top ingredients and I don't have a problem with that....so, who knows!!!???

I have been using CIAB for the last week or so - I guess I like it ok, but no more or less than anything else I've tried. If there is a chance of buildup I'd prefer not to use it over something without polyquats. So many things to learn!
3A/2C fine, normal porosity & elasticity, medium high density

Current products:
YTCucs Color Protection Low poo
GVP Conditioning Balm
Random gels - not sure which ones I like, if any at this point!

HG Summer Routine:
poo - TMW Hydrate
RO & LI - Darcy's Pumpkin Seed
Leave in Products: CHSCK & LALMG
PT - CJ RM
DT - EVCO

Currently trying to figure out a winter routine and transition to a less harsh "poo" for summer.

I've had issues with polyquats twice. The first time was biotera gel and I couldn't figure out what was wrong with my hair other than it was terrible and kept getting worse. I had to use a sulfate shampoo twice to fix it. This morning I tried HESMU. I knew as it was putting it on my hair it wasn't going to work. It dried all tangly and nasty. I had to wash again with sulfate shampoo. No more polyquats for me. Especially number four.

HESMU made it feel like there was a yucky plastic film on my hair. I was low-pooing regularly at the time I tried it, but it took more than one or two low-pooings to remove the buildup. (That was years ago, before people awakened to the fact that it could be better for our hair just to do a single, clarifying sulfate cleanse, and get on with it.) I wasn't sure which ingredient or combination of ingredients caused that, but I chucked it.
Peace,
Morgan
